Recent research has shown that after spinal cord injury, the nervous system reorganizes. Nevertheless, little is known of the effects of neural reorganization, or plasticity, on motor skills. In this work, we present a method that utilizes kinetic and kinematic analysis, for investigating balance control in a rodent model of incomplete spinal cord injury. In this setup, the animals sit unconstrained on their hindlimbs on a platform while they eat a Fruitloop. In this posture, the animal is supporting all the body weight on its hindquarters removing the need for the animal to support itself on

Femoral head contusions can occur concurrently with knee ligament injuries, patellar dislocations, or traumatic hip dislocations. Posterior hip subluxation is a possible mechanism in the absence of hip dislocation. Clinicians should have a high index of suspicion when evaluating an athlete who has significant hip or groin symptoms, despite having experienced seemingly minor or relatively low-energy trauma. Most patients should respond well to a period of non-weight bearing and a gradual return to exercise, but they may need to be monitored for future avascular necrosis and osteoarthritis in th

Epiphyseolysis capitis femoris represents the most common disorder of the adolescent hip, which is followed by a significant rate of early osteoarthrosis. Based on intraoperative findings during the surgical management of 23 hips with epiphyseolysis, early acetabular cartilage abrasion by a cam effect and acetabular rim impingement elicited by the prominent femoral metaphysis have been identified. Both phenomena cause direct damage to the hip joint, especially during flexion and flexion/internal rotation of the hip. As evidenced during surgery, the prominent and sometimes sharp-edged anterior

A thirty-eight-year-old intoxicated man was admitted to the surgical trauma service following a single motor-vehicle accident. He had a severe closed head injury, bilateral pulmonary contusions, a fracture-dislocation of the right acetabulum, and an open injury of the right knee joint. The acetabular fracture pattern was an associated both-column fracture with the femoral head dislocated into a widely displaced posterior-column fracture line. The treating physicians agreed that it would be in the patient's best interest to take him to the operating room for emergent debridement and irrigation

We present the case of a 71-year-old woman who was hospitalized because of a severe hip contusion. She had no symptoms or clinical signs of abdominal disease. Routine blood testing showed anemia, presumably owing to occult bleeding. Ultrasonographic abdominal screening revealed ileo-ileal intussusception with a central hyperechoic tumor suggestive of a lipoma as lead point. This diagnosis was confirmed at surgery, where a small bowel resection was performed. Histologic examination disclosed a benign angiolipoma of the ileum with a superficial shallow ulceration which obviously was the source o

Our long-term goal is to formulate and assess functional methodologies to enhance recovery of locomotor function in human subjects after incomplete Spinal Cord Contusion Injury (iSCI). This methodology could consist of locomotor training by active treadmill walking. Here, we present kinematic analysis of limb movements in rats with iSCI that have undergone treadmill-walking training. Video images were recorded during treadmill walking of iSCI rats at different intervals from 2 weeks to 24 weeks post injury and in age matched rats without injury. A kinematic analysis program was used to acquire

Although athletic injuries about the hip and groin occur less commonly than injuries in the extremities, they can result in extensive rehabilitation time. Thus, an accurate diagnosis and well-organized treatment plan are critical. Because loads of up to eight times body weight have been demonstrated in the hip joint during jogging, presumably even greater loads can occur during vigorous athletic competition. The available imaging modalities are effective diagnostic tools when selected on the basis of a thorough history and physical examination. Considerable controversy exists as to the cause a

BACKGROUND: Owing to several recent bus-related accidents in Denmark, we wished to investigate injuries sustained by passengers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From our ongoing registration of patients treated in the casualty department at Odense University Hospital, we identified all residents of Odense Municipality who had sustained injuries as bus passengers from 1996 to 1999. Market analysis and demographic information were used to calculate the incidence and risk.
RESULTS: Over this four-year period, 327 consecutive injuries had been sustained by 246 bus passengers, 72 men and 174 women, mean a

We studied 2,552 snowboarding injuries and 5048 skiing injuries sustained during 1988-97. The number of snowboarding injuries had been increasing year by year and was 6 times as many as skiing injuries (2.0 versus 0.35 per 1,000 visits). The types of snowboarding injuries included fractures (39%), lacerations (21%), dislocations (17%), and contusions (15%). Upper extremity injuries were more frequent than those in the lower extremity in snowboarders. The commonest fractures involved the radius (48%), clavicle (11%), humerus (11%), and ulna (7-8%). The shoulder joint was most commonly dislocate

BACKGROUND: Most reports on in-line skating injuries describe severe injuries admitted to injury clinics. Little is known about the overall rate of injury and the contribution of the different disciplines.
METHODS: In a retrospective inquiry data on injuries were obtained of 105 in-line skaters of whose 69% were active in fitness skating, 59% in jumping/grinding and 51% in the halfpipe. Beside the nature, location and degree of the injury, information was given on where the injury happened and whether protectors were worn at the time of injury.
RESULTS: Of 197 injuries 145 healed without med

OBJECTIVE: To analysis the clinical characters of gluteal sciatic nerve injuries and investigate the treatment options.
METHODS: From October 1962 to June 1997, 190 patients with gluteal sciatic nerve injuries were adopted in this retrospective study. In these cases, the sciatic nerve injuries were caused by injection in 164 patients(86.32%), stab injury in 14 patients, pelvic fracture and hip dislocation in 11 patients, and contusion injury in 1 patient. Among them, 15 cases were treated by conservative method and the other 175 cases were operated. According to the observation during the ope

We studied the occurrence of "bone bruises" of the knee resulting from dashboard impaction and detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We chose 21 knees of 20 front seat occupants in head-on motor vehicle collisions. To ensure all knees had received a significant axial load, patients selected had ipsilateral posterior hip dislocations and/or posterior wall acetabular fractures. Anteroposterior and lateral knee radiographs were negative for fracture in all cases. T1-weighted axial and sagittal MRI of each knee with a 1.5-T magnetron scanner revealed signal changes consistent with subchond

This study investigated the number and type of injuries that occurred to athletes with disabilities from 1990-1996. The subjects were U.S. athletes who participated in the 1990 World Games and Championships, 1991 U.S. Paralympic Trials, 1992 Paralympic Games, the 1994 World Athletics Championship, and the 1996 Paralympic Games. A reportable injury was defined as an injury/illness that was evaluated by the U.S. Medical Staff during these competitions. Illnesses (29.8%) were the most commonly reported problem followed by muscular strains (22.1%). The most commonly injured body locations were the

A major disaster was encountered at the 1997 Maccabiah Games in Israel. As the Australian team was about to enter the main stadium for the opening ceremony, a pedestrian bridge they were crossing collapsed, killing 4 athletes and injuring many others. The aim of this paper is to establish the rates, types and anatomical locations of musculoskeletal injuries incurred by members of the Australian Maccabiah Games team, with particular reference to the impact of the bridge collapse. In total, the 410 members of the team (360 athletes and coaches and 50 team officials) reported 166 injuries from th

A 36-year old man suffered an isolated head injury with a fracture of the skull, epidural and subdural hematomas as well as brain contusion (Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS): 5 points). The hematomas were evacuated by craniotomy. Because of high intracranial pressure (ICP) a barbiturate coma was necessary. Additionally, the patient demonstrated acute lung injury (ARDS) due to pneumonia 8 days after trauma. The patient recovered slowly and was transferred to neurorehabilitation on day 57 after injury. During the following 12 months the patient developed a significant deficit of hip motion (extens

Besides its immunosuppressive/anti-inflammatory activity, cyclosporin-A (CsA) may protect damaged tissues from lipid peroxidation (LP) by free radicals. To determine the effect of CsA on LP spinal cord (SC) injury, Wistar rats were treated with either vehicle or CsA (2.5 mg/kg per 12 h i.p.) 1, 2, 6 or 12 h after SC trauma by T8-T9 spinal cord contusion, analyzing LP 24 h after injury at the lesion site by the lipid fluorescent products formation method. CsA significantly diminished LP to levels below control values after contusion (P < 0.05). The greater inhibition was observed when CsA was g

While MR imaging studies of the hip have been directed routinely toward the diagnosis of atraumatic osteonecrosis (ON), interest has increased in the use of MR imaging to diagnose other disorders of the hip and surrounding soft tissues, especially in athletic injuries. In addition to reviewing MR imaging technical considerations and image appearance, this article discusses applications of MR imaging to diagnosing pelvic and hip fractures, muscle contusion and strain, tendon injuries, acetabular labral tears, bursitis, and osteitis pubis and chronic symphyseal injury.
