BACKGROUND: The frequency and severity of injury in beach soccer are unknown.
PURPOSE: To estimate the incidence rates, characteristics, and risk factors for injuries associated with beach soccer.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: The same sports physician examined and recorded injuries incurred during the Japanese National Beach Soccer Championships in 2013 and 2014. Posttournament follow-up was made for all injuries. Match exposure for each player was recorded through video review to examine individual risk factors.

Acute vascular injuries have been described in relation to high-energy trauma accidents or in patients undergoing surgery in the femoral area. We describe a healthy patient who sustained a direct, low-energy contusion in the thigh and presented haemodynamic instability. Arteriography was used to locate the point of bleeding, and embolisation and vessel occlusion were carried out to stop the haemorrhage. The genetic study identified the COL3A1 gene mutation; accordingly, the patient was diagnosed with the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV (vascular type).

Quadriceps and hamstring injuries occur frequently in football and are generally treated conservatively. While return to competition following hamstring strains is relatively quick, a high rate of injury recurrence highlights the importance of targeted rehabilitation and conditioning. This review describes the clinical manifestations of thigh-related soft-tissue injuries seen in football players. Two of these-muscle strains and contusions-are relatively common, while a third condition-the Morel-Lavallée lesion-is a rare, yet relevant injury.

This paper describes a new technique in the repair of the hand defect with digital extensor tendon injury. The anterolateral thigh flap with the thick femoral fascia has been used in the reconstruction of the composite defect of the dorsal hand, especially the defect of tendon. This technique requires short period of treatment and hence causes less damage to the donor site but shows a better recovery of the hand function. A favorable curative effect has been obtained in this patient.

BACKGROUND: No known biologic mechanisms link tissue injury with pneumonia (PNA). Neutrophils (PMNs) are innate immune cells that clear bacteria from the lung by migration toward chemoattractants and killing bacteria in neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). We predicted that tissue injury would suppress PMN antimicrobial function in the lung. We have also shown that mitochondria-derived damage-associated molecular pattern molecules from the bone can alter PMN phenotype and so hypothesized that formyl peptides (FPs) from fractures predispose to PNA by suppressing PMN activity in the lung.

Morel-Lavallee lesions (MLL) are rare, closed degloving injuries caused by trauma that delivers a shearing force to the soft tissue most commonly of the hip. Thigh contusions are common injuries in sports, and the thigh is a very common location for sports-related muscle contusions. Treatment starts with placement of the knee in 120 of flexion for 24 hours. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be detrimental to the healing if used for more than 48 to 72 hours, and glucocorticosteroids should be avoided. A 56-year-old male patient presented with left knee and thigh pain after suffering a knee contusion. History revealed a complex fracture of the distal femur 30 years prior to presentation. Initial blood tests upon admission showed elevated C reactive protein values. Subsequent imaging and biopsies showed a correlate to osteomyelitis, upon which the diagnosis of a late onset osteomyelitis as an outburst of silent chronic osteomyelitis was made. The patient was successfully treated surgically by means of aggressive debridement and discharged after confirmation of negative biopsies.

Football (soccer) is the world's most popular sport with most players being younger than 18 years. Playing football can induce beneficial health effects, but there is also a high risk of injury. Therefore, it is necessary to implement measures for preventing injuries. The present review analyzes and summarizes published scientific information on the incidence and characteristics of football injuries in children and adolescent players to arrive at sound conclusions and valid considerations for the development of injury-prevention programs. A literature search was conducted up to November 2012.
