We report a rare case of a 60-year-old male patient with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH) caused by a PHEX gene mutation complicated with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (FD). The patient presented with bilateral lower limb deformity for 59 years and recurrent fractures for 30 years. Physical examination revealed short stature (113 cm), multiple skeletal deformities, and limited joint mobility. Laboratory investigations showed persistent hypophosphatemia (0.43 mmol/L), elevated alkaline phosphatase (262 U/L), and increased urinary phosphorus excretion. Imaging studies demonstrated both ty

A 5-year-old female spayed ferret was presented with lameness of the left hind limb and dyspnea. Five months earlier, the animal had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and an undifferentiated precardiac mass. Clinical, radiological, and laboratory examinations revealed a left femoral neck fracture, mild anemia, and hyperglobulinemia. Due to the poor general condition and unfavorable prognosis, the animal was euthanized. Pathological examination identified the precardiac mass as multiple myeloma with dissemination to the mediastinum, spleen, liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, lymph nodes,

Background and Objectives: Unicameral bone cyst (UBC) is a benign cystic lesion originating from the metaphysis, often extending toward the diaphysis as the individual grows. It is more common in boys aged 5-15 years, typically affecting long bones like the humerus and femur. UBC is usually asymptomatic and found incidentally on imaging, with pathological fractures being a common complication. Treatment options include conservative observation, percutaneous injection, and surgery. This study aims to compare the diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up processes of UBC cases across multiple centers

The circling rat is an autosomal recessive mutant (homozygous ci2/ci2) that displays lateralized circling behaviour, locomotor hyperactivity, ataxia and stereotypic head-movement. These abnormal behaviours occur in phases or bursts either spontaneously or in response to stress. Heterozygous (ci2/+) littermates display normal spontaneous behaviours. We have previously found that ci2/ci2 rats of both genders have a lower tissue content of dopamine in the striatum ipsilateral to the preferred direction of rotation, indicating that the rats turn away from the brain hemisphere with higher striatal

BACKGROUND: Invasive Streptococcus pyogenes infection is exceedingly rare in patients with closed fractures. However, it can precipitate life-threatening necrotizing soft-tissue infection and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome once it occurs. Early recognition and aggressive multidisciplinary management are essential for survival.
CASE SUMMARY: We presented a patient who sustained closed fracture of the upper segment of the left femur due to a traffic accident. He had a history of acute pharyngitis 10 days ago. The patient experienced fever on the second day after admission, with his body tem

Antipathogen defense; b-caryophyllene; vector-virus mutualism Plants respond to insect herbivory by producing and releasing distinctive blends of volatile compounds. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) serve several roles, including direct defense through toxic or repellent effects on herbivores and indirect defense by attracting the herbivores' natural enemies (Bleeker et al. 2009; Veyrat et al. 2016). HIPVs also act as warning signals, informing undamaged tissues within the same plant and nearby plants of a pending insect attack (Heil and Bueno 2007). HIPVs are mostly composed of

Background and objective Skeletal involvement in multiple myeloma frequently results in pathological fractures, which significantly increase morbidity and functional disability. Advanced imaging modalities such as PET/CT and whole-body MRI are considered reference techniques for disease assessment; however, their availability remains limited in many healthcare systems. The objective of this study is to evaluate the association between 99mTc-MIBI uptake and pathological fracture occurrence in the appendicular skeleton of patients with multiple myeloma and to determine whether radiotracer uptake

BACKGROUND: Use of the ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists (cabergoline and pergolide) is associated with an increased risk of cardiac valvulopathy. Pergolide was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 because of the risk of valvular heart disease, while the European Medicines Agency (EMA) required a reduction in the maximum daily dosage of cabergoline and pergolide from 6 mg/day to 3 mg/day in 2008. In Japan, the package inserts of both drugs were revised in April 2007 to request that physicians conduct periodic ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) examinations for patients taking cabergoline or

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a rare interstitial lung disease with a poor prognosis that currently lacks effective treatment methods. Preventing the acute exacerbation of IPF, identifying the molecular subtypes of patients, providing personalized treatment, and developing individualized drugs are guidelines for predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM / 3PM) to promote the development of IPF. Oxidative stress (OS) is an important pathological process of IPF. However, the relationship between the expression levels of oxidative stress-related genes (OSRGs) an

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

BACKGROUND: Macroscopic fat pulmonary embolism is extremely uncommon. Most cases occur in the context of fat grafting or long bone fractures. Macroscopic fat pulmonary embolism may be associated with cardiopulmonary compromise and is associated with high mortality. Mechanical thrombectomy is an emerging technique in interventional radiology, primarily investigated as a therapeutic approach for thrombotic pulmonary embolism.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case report of a 73-year-old woman with macroscopic fat pulmonary embolism after a neck of femur fracture. Initially, she had severe circul

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Distal femur fractures, particularly in patients with intellectual disabilities, pose unique challenges due to factors such as non-compliance with postoperative instructions and recurrent fixation failures. These complications necessitate multiple surgical interventions, increasing morbidity and disability.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old female with intellectual disability and comorbid diabetes and hypertension sustained a distal femur fracture. Initial management included open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plating. However, due to non-adherence to

BACKGROUND: Long bone fracture is one of the most common concomitant injuries in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, requiring surgical intervention in the form of intramedullary nailing (IMN), open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), or temporary external fixation, otherwise known as damage control orthopedics (DCO), for transient stabilization before definitive repair. There are no definitive guidelines for femur fracture management in polytrauma TBI pediatric patients. This study investigates the outcomes of patients with TBI and femur fractures who underwent DCO versus ear

Interlocking screw backout is a significant complication of femoral nailing that may lead to pain, fixation failure, and need for reoperation. The risk for this is increased in osteoporotic bone or in cases of so-called "extreme nailing" when the articular segment is short, and fixation is limited. A newly developed retrograde femoral nailing system (DePuy Synthes RFN-Advanced™ Retrograde Femoral Nailing System (DePuy Synthes, Monument, CO)) was designed specifically to prevent this known failure mode and was recently approved for use within the United States. A preassembled polymer inlay at t

Due to demographic changes and the associated expected increases in the number of primary hip arthroplasty and revision surgeries, it is important to identify factors that can reduce complications and revisions. One such factor is the hospital volume. Studies have shown that hospitals with higher case numbers have lower morbidity and complication rates. Most studies are based on registry data, which is often incomplete and does not include patient-specific factors. In this study, nationwide pseudonymised inpatient data and insurance records from the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK) from 2017 t

BACKGROUND: Older adults with hip fractures of the femur have a higher probability of developing dysphagia after surgery. Dysphagia affects older patients with hip fractures in multiple ways, thus clinicians need to understand the impact of dysphagia on the effectiveness of treatment.
AIMS: The aim of this study is to clarify the impact of dysphagia on dependence in activities of daily living in older adults with hip fractures.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study utilized a nationwide inpatient database, encompassing acute inpatient care from 2017 to 2022. Older adults (≥60 years

BACKGROUND: Time to union in civilian firearm injuries is variable and not well described in the literature. This study measures the time to union for femoral and tibial shaft fractures treated with an intramedullary nail (IMN). Time to union is compared across open, closed, or ballistic trauma (BT) fractures. The goal of the study is to answer the questions: (1) Do tibial shaft fractures heal in specific temporal patterns based on mechanism of injury and (2) Do these temporal healing patterns apply to both the tibia and femur?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Included patients had tibial or femoral sha
