BACKGROUND: Iliotibial band syndrome is a common overuse injury that is twice as likely to affect female runners compared to male runners. It is unclear if there is a consistent running pattern and strength profile exhibited by female and male runners with iliotibial band syndrome.
RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine if any differences existed in lower-extremity kinematics and hip strength between runners who retrospectively, currently, or prospectively had iliotibial band syndrome.
METHODS: Papers included must have reported three-dime

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), as an overused injury of the lower extremities, has developed into a common cause of lateral knee pain. At present, the treatment of ITBS includes drug therapy, muscle strength training, physical therapy, and surgical treatment. Among these methods, physical therapy, drug therapy, and surgical treatment can only alleviate the symptoms of patients. As a safe and effective treatment, lower limb muscle strength training can improve patients' muscle strength, correct abnormal gait, and reduce the recurrence rate of the disease by paying attention to the dynamic cha

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: American football generates the most sports-related injuries in the United States, with tackling as the leading injury mechanism. Overall injury rate at the collegiate level has been reported as 8.61 per 1,000 athlete exposures (AEs) - twice the rate of high school levels; competition injury rates are reported as high as 36.94/1000 AEs. Traumatic hip dislocation is an uncommon injury typically arising from high-energy axial impact with only 2-5.5% occurring during sports activities.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 22-year-old NCAA Division I football defensive back who experienced

Stress injuries involving the epiphyseal-physeal-metaphyseal complex affecting the extremities of child and adolescent athletes were first described in the early 1950s. Initially observed in Little League baseball players, these injuries are now known to affect skeletally immature athletes in a variety of sports that involve high-impact repetitive overuse activities. Collectively known as primary periphyseal stress injuries, they may affect the long bones around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot of young athletes. These injuries respond well to timely treatment and r

BACKGROUND: Patients with transfemoral amputation and socket prostheses are at a heightened risk of developing musculoskeletal overuse injuries, commonly due to altered joint biomechanics. Osseointegrated prostheses, which involve direct anchorage of the prosthesis to the residual limb through a bone anchored prosthesis, are a novel alternative to sockets yet their biomechanical effect is largely unknown.
METHODS: Four patients scheduled to undergo unilateral transfemoral prosthesis osseointegration completed two data collections (baseline with socket prosthesis and 12-months after prosthesis

Understanding the challenges football (soccer) players face during adolescence is fundamental to avoid disruptions in their development due to injury. This mini review will describe basic concepts of somatic growth and biological maturity, examine data from 53 prospective epidemiological studies on high-level youth football players and discuss how age, growth and maturity may affect the injury patterns observed. Based on the existing evidence, at least every third player sustains an injury during a football season. The thigh (median for studies of boys: 25%, median for girls: 21%), ankle (b: 1

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the burden of knee, hip, and lumbar spine disorders occurring in the year after an ankle sprain and the influence therapeutic exercise (TE) has on this burden.
METHODS: A total of 33,361 individuals diagnosed with ankle sprain in the Military Health System between 2010 and 2011 were followed for 1 yr. The prevalence of knee, hip, and lumbar care-seeking injuries sustained after sprain was identified. Relationships between demographic groups, ankle sprain type, and use of TE with rate of proximal injuries were evaluated using Cox proportional hazard mod

Head of femur fractures are relatively rare and tend to be associated with dislocations of the hip and fractures of the acetabulum. Other parts of the femur, namely the neck is also often involved. Only two cases per million are reported on a yearly basis which poses significance due to its extreme rarity. Here, we present a 30-year-old obese male patient with Pipkin's fracture who was treated successfully by us without any major complications.

BACKGROUND: Tibial stress fracture (TSF) is an overuse running injury with a long recovery period. While many running studies refer to biomechanical risk factors for TSF, only a few have compared biomechanics in runners with TSF to controls. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate biomechanics in runners with TSF compared to controls.
METHODS: Electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, Cochrane, and CINAHL were searched. Risk of bias was assessed and meta-analysis conducted for variables reported in 3 or more studies.
RESULTS: The search ret

INTRODUCTION: Isolated coracoid process fracture of scapula is a rare. Usually, it happens along with the rotator cuff tear, dislocation of acromioclavicular joint, or glenohumeral joint. Displaced fracture will cause impairment of upper limb movement. Since there are very low numbers of cases reported so far, the treatment is still controversial.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 42-year-old male laborer with motor vehicle accident, following which he had pain and restricted movements on his left shoulder. On examination, Glasgow Coma Scale 15/15 and left shoulder had swelling and tendernes

Ultra-low-density elastomeric foams enable lightweight systems that combine high compliance with efficient energy return. Their mechanical response is inherently complex, characterized by high compressibility, nonlinear elasticity, and microstructural heterogeneity. In high-performance racing shoes, these foams are critical for low weight, high cushioning, and efficient energy return; yet, their constitutive behavior remains difficult to model and poorly understood. Here we integrate mechanical testing and machine learning to discover the mechanics of two ultra-low density elastomeric polymeri

CONTEXT: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a common overuse injury in runners with parallels to our findings of overuse in Greco Roman wrestlers. Despite research indicating coordination and movement-based factors about the hip, no studies were found using functional motor control (FMC) in runners or wrestlers with ITBS. Thus, we compared FMC exercises and therapeutic exercises (TEs) on pain, function, muscle strength, and range of motion (ROM) in national-level Greco Roman wrestlers with ITBS.
DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Sixty national-level Greco Roman wrestlers diagnose

Patellofemoral joint pain and iliotibial band syndrome are very common running-related injuries. Excessive contralateral pelvic drop, hip adduction, and hip internal rotation have been suggested to be associated with the two injuries. The purpose of this repeated measures and the cross-sectional study was to investigate the effect of flat running shoes on these kinematic variables compared with that of conventional running shoes with a 10 mm drop. Eighteen male recreational runners were recruited to run in flat shoes and conventional shoes with a 10 mm drop, in random order. Impact force data

Overuse injuries of the hip are common, and clinical diagnosis may be difficult because of overlapping and nonspecific clinical symptoms. Imaging can play an essential role in guiding diagnosis and management. Femoroacetabular joint structural abnormalities result in various conditions that can predispose patients to early development of osteoarthritis. Repetitive stress on the skeletally immature hip can result in apophyseal injuries. Notable nonosseous overuse hip pathologies include athletic pubalgia, trochanteric bursitis, and injuries involving the iliopsoas myotendinous unit. Timely diag

INTRODUCTION: Cell phones are an integral part of daily life but are distractors that can contribute to injury. The present study uses a large national emergency department (ED) database to evaluate the frequency, anatomic location, and type of injuries associated with cell phone use. We hypothesize that orthopaedic injuries related to cell phone use have increased over time and affect certain body parts and age groups more than others.
METHODS: The 1999 to 2018 Nation Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried for cell phone-related injuries leading to ED visits (injuries to the head
