Femoral neck strain prediction during level walking using a combined musculoskeletal and finite element model approach.

Recently, coupled musculoskeletal-finite element modelling approaches have emerged as a way to investigate femoral neck loading during various daily activities. Combining personalised gait data with finite element models will not only allow us to study changes in motion/movement, but also their effects on critical internal structures, such as the femur. However, previous studies have been hampered by the small sample size and the lack of fully personalised data in order to construct the coupled model. Therefore, the aim of this study was to build a pipeline for a fully personalised multiscale

Injuries in youth football and the relationship to player maturation: An analysis of time-loss injuries during four seasons in an English elite male football academy.

A better insight into injuries in elite-youth football may inform prevention strategies. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the frequency, incidence, and pattern of time-loss injuries in an elite male football academy, exploring injuries in relation to age and maturation status. Across four consecutive playing seasons, playing exposure and injuries to all academy players (U'9 to U'21) were recorded by club medical staff. Maturation status at the time of injury was also calculated for players competing in U'13 to U'16 aged squads. Time-loss injury occurrence and mat

Injury Characteristics in Pre-Professional Modern Dancers - Prospective Study of Differences Due to Sex, Training Year, and External Causal Mechanisms.

As efforts to improve surveillance and decrease injury rates in pre-professional dancer's progress, it is important to identify injury patterns and contexts. The aim of this study was to examine sex, training-based injury characteristics, and external causal mechanisms of injury among pre-professional modern dancers. Using a prospective cohort study design, 180 dancers (females = 140, males = 40, age 18.15 ± 0.68 years) were screened at freshman enrollment and followed for the 4 years of their college training. Injury, defined as medical attention injury (MAI) or time-loss injury (TLI), was cl

Capsulorrhaphy using suture anchors in open reduction of developmental dislocation of hip: technical note.

We describe a new technique of using titanium alloy anchors to perform internally rotating capsulorrhaphy during open reduction and stabilization procedure and obliteration of pseudoacetabulum when one exists. We routinely use anterior approach via bikini incision (modified Smith-Peterson approach) to perform open reduction and internally rotating capsulorrhaphy. We describe the technique of using barbed titanium alloy anchors preloaded with nonabsorbable sutures and two needles, to accomplish a secure and easy capsulorrhaphy, in selected cases. We have used this technique in 21 hips, since 20

Septic Dislocation of Hip After Cephalomedullary Nail Fixation of Intertrochanteric Fractures of Femur: A Case Report.

CASE: We describe 3 cases of septic hip arthritis with a dislocation after failed, cephalomedullary nail (CMN) fixation following fragility intertrochanteric (IT) hip fractures that were treated with antibiotic spacer placement. CONCLUSION: Septic hip arthritis and compromised hip abductors can contribute to dislocation of the hip after CMN for IT fractures. This case report presents a treatment plan to address this rare complication, not yet reported after CMN for IT fractures in the literature, to control infection and optimize function.

Unusual Combination of Hip Dislocation with Ipsilateral Femoral Neck and Acetabulum Fracture: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic dislocation of hip associated with ipsilateral femur neck and acetabulum fracture is a rare and devastating injury as a result of high-energy trauma, with potential complications of femur head aseptic necrosis and hip joint degenerative arthritis. Patients, postoperatively, may encounter decreased functional outcomes and serious challenge, during activities of daily living. Management guidelines lack clarity, with possible options including fracture fragments fixation or hip joint replacement. CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old patient was diagnosed with posterior dislocation

Bilateral Perthes Masking Morquio Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Evaluation of pain in children after trauma can sometimes be difficult; in particular, a knee pain in a child could originate from the hip, until evidence of the contrary. Often is the low-energy trauma that leads to a joint dislocation in children. Furthermore, the present guidelines state that a hip dislocation in a child should be replaced within 6 (maximum 12) hours, to reduce the risk of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head. CASE PRESENTATION: After falling during sports activity at the kindergarten, a 5-years-old boy was taken to the emergency room of a small hospi

Site-specific features of active muscle stiffness and proximal aponeurosis strain in biceps femoris long head.

Limited information is available on site-specific features of muscle stiffness and aponeurosis strain of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) during contractions. Therefore, understanding of the mechanics and etiology of hamstring strain injuries remains difficult. As a first step to gain further insight into them, the present study aimed to identify whether active muscle stiffness and proximal aponeurosis strain during contractions are varied along the long axis of the BFlh. The BFlh muscle shear wave speed (proxy for stiffness) was measured in the proximal, central, and distal sites during 20

Conservative treatment of iliotibial band syndrome in runners: Are we targeting the right goals?

OBJECTIVE: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is presumably caused by excessive tension in the iliotibial band (ITB) leading to compression and inflammation of tissues lying beneath it. Usually managed conservatively, there is a lack of scientific evidence supporting the treatment recommendations, and high symptom recurrence rates cast doubt on their causal effectiveness. This review discusses the influence of common physiotherapeutic measures on risk factors contributing to tissue compression beneath the ITB. METHODS: The potential pathogenic factors are presented on the basis of a simple biome
