Chrysomya bezziana, the Old-World Screwworm, is a parasitic blowfly that causes myiasis, an infestation where larvae feed on live tissues of vertebrate hosts. Myiasis caused by C. bezziana poses a threat for public health and livestock economy in Asia with a potential risk of global spread by human travelers and animals. Genome resources for this parasite are urgently needed as these can facilitate the development of novel control methods to mitigate the impact of C. bezziana on public health and livestock industries. Here, we present the first genome assembly and annotation for C. bezziana. T

This study reports the first case of bronchial myiasis in a dog caused by Oestrus ovis, a parasite known to infest sheep, and occasionally other mammals. A 9-year-old dog, from a rural area near Ancona (Italy), exhibited persistent coughing despite antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatments. Bronchoscopy revealed a live first-instar larva of O. ovis, confirmed through morphological and molecular analyses. Larval removal and treatment with isoxazolines resulted in a rapid resolution of symptoms. This case highlights the critical importance of including atypical parasitic infestations in the di

Ophthalmomyiasis is an uncommon parasitic infestation of the human eye caused by dipteran larvae, most frequently Oestrus ovis. It is rarely reported in temperate countries such as Bulgaria. We present a case of external ophthalmomyiasis in a 35-year-old urban resident, with no livestock exposure, caused by O. ovis. Larvae were morphologically identified after extraction. Approximately 30 motile larvae were mechanically removed over several days. Microscopy confirmed first-instar O. ovis larvae. Treatment included systemic and topical antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, and eye irrigation,

Blow flies (Lucilia sericata and Phormia regina) are necrophagous insects that interact with dense microbial reservoirs and are opportunistic vectors of human and animal pathogens. Despite constant exposure to diverse environmental microbes, it is unclear whether their bacterial communities are primarily acquired stochastically or shaped by host factors that could influence pathogen carriage. We conducted a systematic comparison of wild L. sericata and P. regina collected from seven cities across an urban-rural gradient to determine whether microbiome composition is structured by host species

Species interactions are defined by the behavioral strategies deployed by the parties involved. However, a barrier to fully understanding the processes shaping those strategies has been the limited knowledge about the diverse and complex ways in which species can interact. Here, we perform a systematic review to examine the natural history and evolutionary ecology of the interactions between two large clades with a long evolutionary history together: Diptera and Amphibians. We outline three main strategies that have evolved multiple times within Diptera: (a) adult flies feeding on amphibian bl

A 44-year-old unhoused male with a history of alcohol dependence was admitted to the emergency department with symptoms of tremors, agitation, and generalized pain. His condition rapidly deteriorated, revealing a subdural hematoma that necessitated an urgent craniotomy. Following surgery, he was diagnosed with multisite myiasis, with maggots present in his ears, nose, eye, and toenail bed. The treatment included surgical removal of the larvae, administration of ivermectin, and broad-spectrum antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. ENT evaluations confirmed further infestations, identifyin

Exorista sorbillans, a parasitic fly that infests the silkworm Bombyx mori, causes severe economic losses in sericulture. Current control methods are limited by pesticide resistance, underscoring the need for novel strategies targeting essential physiological processes. Here, we identified and characterized the hatching enzyme gene (EsHE) from E. sorbillans, which encodes a zinc-binding metalloprotease highly expressed during egg hatching process and third-instar larval development. Heterologous expression of EsHE revealed that its catalytic domain (EsHEb) exhibits robust proteolytic activity

OBJECTIVES: Hippobosca camelina (camel ked) is an obligate hematophagous ectoparasite that infests camels. Hematophagy inflicts painful bites, leading to myiasis, anaemia and pathogen transmission. The genome assembly for this species is currently unavailable, limiting our understanding of its genetics, particularly its chemosensory system. Therefore, this study focused on generating whole genome assembly and characterizing the chemosensory genes to aid in molecular studies of the camel ked. DATA DESCRIPTION: Genomic DNA was extracted from the thoracic muscles of both the male and female camel

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Cerebral myiasis is a rare neurosurgical condition with only 21 cases reported globally. Post-traumatic forms are common in low- to middle-income countries, often arising from neglected wounds. We report the first documented case in Ghana, highlighting systemic barriers to timely neurotrauma care.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old boy sustained an open comminuted skull fracture as an unhelmeted pillion rider in a tricycle collision. After a 3-day delay in wound care at a peripheral facility, he presented with a foul-smelling, sand-contaminated wound. Neurologic asse

We present the first Scandinavian cases of bacteremia caused by Ignatzschineria indica, I. ureiclastica, and Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica. Two patients with fly larvae-infested wounds were admitted to a Danish hospital in the summer of 2024. The first patient, a 62-year-old male with alcohol overuse and septic shock, had W. chitiniclastica and I. ureiclastica bacteremia, managed with piperacillin/tazobactam and ciprofloxacin. The second, a 67-year-old diabetic male with peripheral vascular disease, had I. indica bacteremia requiring below-knee amputation and targeted antibiotics. Both isol

This study amied to elucidate the case of an older patient suffering from aural myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata. An 81-year-old female patient with a history of middle ear surgery and dementia presented with bleeding in her right ear and visible worms. Upon initial examination, a larva was found crawling on the right auricle. Further examination revealed numerous larvae, purulent otorrhea, and active bleeding in the external auditory canal and mastoid cavity. All larvae were successfully removed with ear irrigation. The patient was diagnosed with otitis media and treated with antibiotic ear

Cutaneous myiasis is most commonly seen in travelers returning to the United States. There are rare reports of US-acquired human myiasis, with Cuterebra larvae being the most common causative organism. Gasterophilus, also known as the horse botfly, however, rarely infests human hosts and typically presents as cutaneous migratory myiasis, unlike this case. We report a cutaneous furuncular myiasis due to Gasterophilus larvae in the neck and cheek of a 4-year-old female after visiting a campground in northern New York.

Larvae of the camel nasal bot fly, Cephalopina titillator (Diptera: Oestridae), cause nasopharyngeal myiasis in camels. This myiasis can be severe, even fatal. Here, the morphology of the main organs of second (L2) and third (L3) instar larvae and of the intra-puparial forms are described, using a combination of micro-computed tomography supported by routine histology. For this, L2 and L3 larvae were collected from the heads of slaughtered camels and were either killed and preserved or allowed to pupariate. Pupariated specimens were killed at intervals and larvae and puparia were prepared for

Myiasis is derived from the Greek word "myia", which means "fly". Zumpt, a German entomologist, defined this condition as the infestation of living humans and vertebrate animals by dipterous larvae that feed on living and dead host tissue, liquid body substances, or ingested food for a certain period. Myiasis is a rare complication that can occur in advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This report describes a rare cutaneous SCC of the face complicated by myiasis. A 70-year-old male patient presented with cutaneous SCC that involved the left lateral side of the nose, medial canthus, and left

In recent years, the Eurasian moose (Alces alces) population in Kazakhstan has increased significantly. According to 2024 estimates, there are now approximately 8960 individuals, primarily in the northern and eastern regions of the country. However, there is limited information on moose parasites in Kazakhstan. Four of seven moose hunted in the Akmola and Kostanay provinces in July 2023 and May 2024 were found to be infested with 8-12 dipterous fly larvae in the nasopharynx. The larvae were morphologically identified as Cephenemyia ulrichii (Oestridae: Oestrinae) third-instar larvae. Molecular

Pseudomyiases occur when vertebrates ingest eggs or larvae of flies that survive gastrointestinal passage and may result in pathological reactions, but they are usually unable to continue their life cycle in the host. Many blow fly species (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are associated with facultative cutaneous myiasis in humans and animals; however, very few cases of blow fly pseudomyiasis have been published in animals. In this report, two cases of canine pseudomyiasis caused by blow flies are documented, and Lucilia cuprina Wiedemann was confirmed as the species responsible in one of them. It is
