Green Management Strategies for Cochliomyia hominivorax Myiasis: Potential of Essential Oils and Nanodelivery Systems.

Cochliomyia hominivorax, the main etiological agent of traumatic myiasis in the New World, continues to have significant health and economic impacts due to its effects on animal health, livestock production and public health in affected regions. Although conventional control strategies, including the Sterile Insect Technique and chemical insecticides, have substantially reduced its distribution, concerns regarding insecticide resistance, environmental impacts, and recent re-emergence events underscore the need for sustainable alternative control approaches. This review summarizes current advan

Global epidemiology of Cephalopina titillator infestation in camels: a systematic review and meta-analysis (1980-2025).

BACKGROUND: Cephalopina titillator (C. titillator) is the causative agent of camel nasopharyngeal myiasis and is widespread in camel-rearing regions worldwide, causing impaired health, reduced productivity, and economic losses. However, despite the veterinary importance of C. titillator, global epidemiological evidence remains limited and fragmented, and no comprehensive synthesis of prevalence data across camel-rearing regions has previously been conducted. The objective of this review was to estimate the global pooled prevalence of C. titillator infestation in camels. In addition, subgroup a

Case Report: A case of aural myiasis in an elderly bedridden patient with newly diagnosed Parkinson's syndrome.

Myiasis, an infestation of living vertebrates by dipteran larvae, is relatively uncommon in otorhinolaryngology. Chronic otitis media and other ear pathologies are significant predisposing factors. This article presents the case of an 89-year-old bedridden female patient who presented with right ear discharge and visible maggots. Following mastoid exploration and systemic antibiotic therapy, her clinical symptoms improved. This case highlights the increased susceptibility of elderly, bedridden patients to aural myiasis.

Scabies and other ectoparasitoses.

Ectoparasitoses are caused by organisms that parasitize their host's skin. They affect a considerable proportion of the global population, with a disproportionately greater burden in disadvantaged individuals and communities, although any human is susceptible. They are more prevalent in tropical climates. They can have a major impact on infected individuals' quality of life and on affected populations, and they can result in severe complications. Despite their contribution to the global burden of disease, ectoparasitoses remain largely neglected. Making their characteristics visible and unders

Urethral Myiasis Associated With an Indwelling Urethral Catheter in a Male Patient.

Human myiasis is an infestation caused by fly larvae. Although cutaneous myiasis is the most common form, involvement of the urogenital tract is rare. We present a case of urethral myiasis in an elderly male with a long-term indwelling urethral catheter. The patient presented to the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Northern Greece with urethral pain. Approximately twenty larvae, each measuring about 10 mm, were removed manually. There were no signs of deeper tissue involvement or bladder infestation. The patient received a short course of oral broad-spectrum antibiotics and repor

The Case of Severe Wound Myiasis Caused by a Minor Injury Sustained by a Spectator During a Tip-Cat-Sport.

Wound myiasis commonly occurs in tropical regions and is caused by flies laying eggs on open wounds. It is essential to raise awareness about preventive measures and treatment methods for this disease, especially because many people now visit endemic areas from non-endemic regions. This report presents a wound myiasis case caused by Chrysomya bezziana, resulting from a small wound sustained by a spectator of "Tip-Cat-sport." A 64-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital in Bangladesh with a severe facial wound infection and symptoms of fever, pain, and swelling. She sustained an injury from t

Travel-Acquired Furuncular Cutaneous Myiasis Mimicking a Bacterial Abscess in a Pediatric Patient.

Furuncular cutaneous myiasis can closely mimic common bacterial abscesses, especially in regions where Dermatobia hominis is not endemic. Here, we present a case of a healthy six-year-old male who returned from a Caribbean cruise and developed four painful nodules on his scalp and arm that were initially presumed to be bacterial abscesses. Incision and drainage yielded little to no purulence. Operative exploration under general anesthesia revealed four intact D. hominis larvae, all of which were successfully extracted. This case underscores the importance of obtaining a travel history and cons

Neglected Trichilemmal Carcinoma with Severe Opportunistic Cutaneous Wound Myiasis: A First Case Report and Implications for Elderly Rural Populations.

This report describes the first documented case of trichilemmal carcinoma (TLC) complicated by opportunistic cutaneous wound myiasis in an elderly rural female patient with a long-standing ulcerated scalp tumour and heavy maggot infestation. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of TLC. A two-stage management strategy was implemented for the patient: initial eradication of myiasis and control of bacterial superinfection, followed by wide local excision of the tumour with split-thickness skin grafting. The patient achieved a good therapeutic outcome with no tumour recurrence at

Multiple Furuncular Cutaneous Myiasis in a 4-Month-Old Infant in an Urban Setting: A Case Report From Cameroon.

Furuncular cutaneous myiasis is a parasitic infestation of the skin by dipteran larvae, commonly reported in tropical Africa, and underreported in infants. We report the case of a 4-month-old male infant from Yaoundé, Cameroon, who presented with incessant crying and a rapidly progressive skin eruption over 4 days. Examination revealed multiple inflammatory nodules at varying stages of development; serous fluid was observed exuding from a central punctum, with intermittent larval movement. Environmental history identified risk factors, including poor household hygiene, drying clothes in shaded

A structured support process for social reintegration of a patient with long-term hikikomori: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hikikomori is a condition characterized by remaining predominantly at home for at least 6 months, with marked social withdrawal and functional impairment. In prolonged cases, reduced self-care and physical comorbidities are common; however, access to necessary medical care is often limited. When a distrust of medical services and the refusal of psychiatric care are pronounced, psychiatric interventions alone may be insufficient. In such cases, it is important to use general medical care as an entry point to subsequent psychiatric and community-based support. CASE PRESENTATION: We

Ultrasound diagnosis of cutaneous furuncular myiasis in a nonendemic area.

Cutaneous myiasis is an uncommon diagnosis in nonendemic regions and may be overlooked in returning travelers with nonspecific dermatologic complaints. We present a case of cutaneous furuncular myiasis in a 14-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with a neck mass 3 months after returning from Costa Rica after failed treatment with antibiotics and ivermectin. Ultrasonography showed an ovoid structure with a hyperechoic core with visible segmentations and surrounding hypoechoic rim; dynamic movement of the larva was not observed. Color Doppler demonstrated flow within the st

The internal larval anatomy of two rodent bot fly species: Cuterebra fontinella (Diptera: Oestridae) and Cuterebra americana.

Species within the genus Cuterebra Clark, 1815 (Diptera: Oestridae: Cuterebrinae) are obligate parasites of rodents and other mammals during the larval stage, causing cutaneous myiasis. The internal larval anatomy of Cuterebra species remains unstudied, despite its potential utility for understanding their parasitic adaptations and for comparative studies with other Oestridae. The present study describes the internal larval anatomy of the species Cuterebra fontinella Clark, 1827 and Cuterebra americana (Fabricius, 1775), using micro-computed tomography-based virtual histological sections and 3

Furuncular Cutaneous Myiasis in a Nontraveler: A Case Report.

Furuncular cutaneous myiasis is an uncommon cause of a furuncle-like subcutaneous lesion and may be mistaken for a bacterial skin infection. We report the case of a previously healthy 30-year-old Saudi woman who presented with a one-week history of a progressively enlarging lesion on the posterior aspect of the left upper thigh. The lesion was initially asymptomatic but subsequently developed localized pruritus, intermittent sharp pain, and surrounding ecchymosis. One day before presentation, a live larva spontaneously emerged through a central punctum after the patient noted discharge from th

Nasal Myiasis Associated With E. coli Bacteremia, Spinal Osteomyelitis, and Epidural Abscess: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal myiasis is a rare parasitic infestation that can predispose to secondary bacterial infection, though progression to systemic complications is uncommon. Cases in nonendemic regions are rare and may present diagnostic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of community-acquired nasal myiasis in a 65-year-old woman presenting with an altered level of consciousness, found to have E. coli bacteremia and subsequent spinal osteomyelitis complicated by an epidural phlegmon requiring surgical decompression. Larvae were directly visualized within the anterior nasal cavity,

Hypodermosis by Hypoderma diana (Diptera: Hypodermatinae) in the Manchurian Wapiti (Cervus canadensis xanthopygus).

Hypoderma diana Brauer, 1858, poses a significant threat to species of deer, yet records of this species in China remain fragmented and lack comprehensive documentation. Following high mortality in wapiti populations in Inner Mongolia during 2023-2024, surveys were conducted in the Gaogesitai Hanwula Nature Reserve in March 2025. Species identity was established through rigorous morphological analysis of third-instar larvae and an emerged adult female using light and scanning electron microscopy, supplemented by a 689 bp COI fragment. Results confirmed H. diana as the causative agent, with lar

Climate change-driven range shifts in a cosmopolitan synanthropic insect: global habitat suitability modeling and projections for Clogmia albipunctata.

Climate change is fundamentally reshaping the geographic distributions of species worldwide, with particular implications for synanthropic organisms closely associated with human environments. Clogmia albipunctata (Diptera: Psychodidae), commonly known as the drain fly, is a cosmopolitan insect of increasing concern due to its ability to establish populations across diverse climatic regions and its documented role as a mechanical vector of human pathogens. We employed maximum entropy (MaxEnt) species distribution modeling to project the global habitat suitability of C. albipunctata under prese

Furuncular Myiasis Mimicking an Epidermal Inclusion Cyst of the Scalp: A Case Report and Focused Review of Diagnostic Pitfalls in Scalp Myiasis.

Furuncular myiasis of the scalp may closely mimic common cystic scalp lesions, including pilar and epidermal inclusion cysts, leading to delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. We report the case of a 67-year-old man who presented with a painful right parietal scalp nodule that was initially diagnosed as a pilar cyst or epidermal inclusion cyst. Mild discharge, erythema, and inflammation partially improved following a two-week course of oral doxycycline; however, persistent pain prompted the patient to pursue surgical excision. Histopathologic examination revealed findings consistent wi
