PURPOSE OF REVIEW: New World screwworm (NWS) is an emerging parasitic threat in Central America and Mexico, which is spreading northward into the southern United States. Here we highlight the changing epidemiology, lifecycle of the NWS fly, clinical presentation, identification, treatment, and potential complications of NWS myiasis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Despite decades of successfully containing NWS flies south of the Darien Gap in southern Panama, NWS flies reemerged in the Central America region in 2023 and have continued to spread northward ever since. On 3 June 2026, United States Department

Cordylobia anthropophaga is a major cause of furuncular myiasis in dogs and humans in sub-Saharan Africa, yet evidence for pharmacological control remains limited. Current management relies mainly on mechanical larval removal, and no controlled studies have assessed the efficacy of modern antiparasitic agents. This study evaluated the curative and preventive efficacy of a single dose of afoxolaner (NexGard®) in dogs with naturally acquired C. anthropophaga infestation under field conditions and explored a possible indirect protective effect in puppies after maternal treatment. A randomized, bl

Myasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae (Coquerel, 1858), represents a significant sanitary and economic challenge under the One Health approach, affecting human health, livestock production, and biodiversity. Studies on the spatial ecology and distribution of this species in South America (SA) have been scarce. This study aimed to model real and potential suitability areas for C. hominivorax in SA, based on myiasis cases in humans and other vertebrates reported in the scientific literature. The MaxEnt model was developed using WorldClim bioclimatic variables clipped to SA, with 1,000

BACKGROUND: Furuncular cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga is a rare condition in non-endemic regions and may mimic furunculosis or skin abscesses, posing a diagnostic challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 24-year-old woman presented eight days after returning from Zanzibar with multiple tender erythematous nodules on the buttocks and left forearm. One larva was self-extracted, and others were removed under medical supervision. Ultrasound showed subcutaneous tracts consistent with larval infestation. Morphological analysis confirmed C. anthropophaga. The patient

PURPOSE: To describe dynamic ultrasonographic findings in travel-associated subcutaneous myiasis.
METHODS: A 54-year-old man with persistent nodular lesions after rural travel underwent gray-scale and color Doppler ultrasonography using a 13-MHz high-frequency linear transducer.
RESULTS: Imaging demonstrated an echogenic subcutaneous structure with posterior acoustic shadowing, surrounding hyperemia, and real-time rhythmic internal movement, supporting larval infestation.
CONCLUSION: Recognition of internal larval motion on ultrasonography may help distinguish myiasis from abscess, foreign

Oral myiasis is an uncommon parasitic infestation caused by dipteran larvae that invade living or necrotic oral tissues, and it is associated with poor oral hygiene, periodontal disease, neurological or psychiatric disability, malignancy, and social vulnerability. This structured review aimed to characterize the risk factors, clinical presentation, and therapeutic alternatives for strictly oral myiasis. A literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, and Scopus to identify case reports and case series involving humans with disease restricted to the oral cavity, published in Spanis

Cochliomyia hominivorax (screwworm fly) has a veterinary and public health importance, as it is the primary agent of myiasis in both livestock and humans across the Americas. This fly oviposits in fresh, open wounds, where the larvae feed on living tissue, compromising animal health and livestock productivity. Furthermore, the efficacy of conventional insecticides has decreased, suggesting the development of parasite resistance. Terpenes are major constituents of essential oils known for their insecticidal properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the terpenes (R)-limonene, α-ter

Dermatobia hominis is a rare cause of cutaneous myiasis in Northern Europe but should be considered in travellers from endemic regions. A 44-year-old man developed a painful furuncular lesion after visiting Costa Rica; a central pore and manual expression revealed a live larva. This case report underscores diagnostic challenges and the need for timely extraction.

Following more than two decades of successful elimination of the New World screwworm fly from Central and North America, new outbreaks emerged in Panama in 2023, initially affecting livestock, and rapidly spreading northward to impact not only livestock but also companion animals and humans. Forest degradation, increasing cattle density, and climate-driven shifts in the fly's distribution-particularly its recolonization of regions it historically occupied-are converging to expose critical gaps in preparedness and cross-sector coordination. In this review, we examine the drivers of screwworm re

Background: Parasitic skin-related conditions represent a frequent and evolving challenge in human dermatology, as they often mimic other dermatoses, and are increasingly complicated by therapeutic resistance. With this study, we aimed to provide a practical, clinician-oriented overview of our experience, contextualising it within the current literature. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective, single-centre observational study, reporting a case series of 88 patients diagnosed with parasitic or arthropod-related skin infestations at the San Raffaele Hospital Dermatology Unit (Milan

Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is an obligate parasitic species and a source of major public health concern as an agent of myiasis in humans, livestock, and wildlife systems, causing millions of dollars in agricultural losses annually. A major approach for screwworm control and eradication is the sterile insect technique (SIT) using gamma radiation. Electron beam (eBeam) radiation is a safer and potentially less expensive alternative ionizing radiation source being explored for SIT. To test this method, late-stage pupae of Cochliomyia macellaria, a sister species of C. homini

BACKGROUND: Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), compared to other forms of selenium, have shown promising antioxidant and anticancer properties with lower toxicity. However, SeNPs precipitate and aggregate in aqueous solutions due to their high surface energy. To overcome this limitation and improve stability, solubility, and enhance biological efficacy, we functionalized them with L-asparagine/tartaric acid (Asn-Tar). This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and antioxidant properties of SeNPs conjugated to Asn-Tar on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells.
METHODS: This study was cond

Myiasis is the tissue infestation by fly larvae, mainly Dermatobia hominis or Lucilia sericata. Sonographic features of D. hominis myiasis are well described but not those of L. sericata with concurrent gas gangrene. A 57-year-old man presented with a 1-month left foot injury, swelling, and functional decline. Examination revealed left foot gangrene with the loss of the fifth toe, maggot infestation, and systemic inflammation. Laboratory tests revealed diabetes mellitus. Point-of-care ultrasound showed subcutaneous air, fluid-debris layers, and hyperechoic, moving structures consistent with la

BACKGROUND: Human cutaneous myiasis caused by Hypoderma sinense is rarely reported and may be mistaken for common bacterial skin disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old boy from a livestock-raising pastoral region of China presented with multiple painful subcutaneous nodules that had not responded to topical antibacterial treatment. Marked eosinophilia, elevated total IgE, and linear ultrasonographic structures raised suspicion of parasitic infestation. A larva was removed intact from the posterior neck lesion through a pre-existing punctum under local anesthesia. Whole-genome shotgun sequen

OBJECTIVE: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) and familial medullary thyroid carcinoma (FMTC) are genetic diseases due to activating mutations of the RET proto-oncogene. Affected patients develop medullary thyroid carcinoma (100%), in an isolated form (FMTC) or in association with phaeochromocytoma (30-50%), and primary hyperparathyroidism (10-20%) (MEN 2A). The presence of cutaneous lichen amyloidosis (CLA) has been anecdotally described in few families harbouring RET proto-oncogene mutation in codon 634. The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of CLA in MEN 2A/FMTC fami

OBJECTIVE: Clogmia albipunctata (C. albipunctata) is a synanthropic moth fly frequently found in humid human environments. Larvae of this species have been reported in suspected cases of intestinal myiasis, but whether they can establish true gastrointestinal infestation remains uncertain. This study evaluated the survival, development, and colonization potential of C. albipunctata using in vitro digestive models and murine oral gavage models.
METHODS: Wild-caught moth flies were reared in artificial climate chambers to establish laboratory colonies. Species identification was subsequently pe
