Fulminant orbital myiasis in a young immunocompetent host.

A young man presented in the emergency department for pain and loss of vision in the right eye. On examination, a deformed globe with a massive infestation of orbit with live maggots and necrotic slough was noted. The vision showed no light perception in the right eye, with a normal left eye examination. Several live maggots were removed from the right orbit. The maggots were identified as Chrysomya species larvae. MRI of the brain and orbit showed a markedly deformed globe with mucosal thickening of the ethmoid sinus with disrupted lamina papyracea. Despite having no identifiable immunocompro

Myiasis in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

Myiasis due to parasitic fly larvae (maggots) can have major consequences for animal health and welfare. The European hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus is frequently presented in rehabilitation centres and veterinary practices due to health problems, including myiasis. In the present study, 557 hedgehogs presented at wildlife rehabilitation centres in Northern Germany during 2018-2021 were examined for the presence of dipteran eggs and larvae. Overall, 15.6% of animals carried fly eggs and/or larvae. Four different dipteran species were identified by PCR and sequencing of the internal transcribed s

Origins and Diversification of Myiasis Across Blowflies.

Parasitism represents a prevalent and successful ecological strategy that has evolved independently numerous times across metazoa. Understanding the origin and diversification of parasitism is a central question in evolutionary biology. This study investigated the evolutionary path leading to a specific form of parasitism in blowflies known as myiasis, where larvae develop on or within a vertebrate. We modeled myiasis-associated traits, including trophic specialization (obligatory parasitism, facultative parasitism and saprophagy), larval food substrate (necrotic, fresh or both) and developmen

Intestinal and Urinary Pseudomyiasis by Psychodinae Larvae in an Adolescent: A Fact, Fallacy, or Harmless Spectator?

Myiasis is caused by fly larvae and can be classified into obligatory, facultative, and accidental (or pseudomyiasis) forms. Clogmia albipunctata, a species of Psychodinae fly, commonly found in areas such as kitchens, toilets, and drains, has been linked to urogenital and intestinal myiasis. However, recent evidence questions its role as a true causative agent of myiasis. We report a 17-year-old female who experienced intermittent larval elimination in her stool and urine, accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms. Psychodinae larvae, likely Clogmia spp., were identified in both stool and urin

When Artificial Intelligence (AI) Met a Botfly: The First AI-Assisted Diagnosis of Cutaneous Furuncular Myiasis in a Community-Based Surgical Practice.

In this report, we describe a rare case of a parasitic infection of Dermatobia hominis in a patient who presented to a general otolaryngology clinic in a Seattle suburb. The 69-year-old male patient initially presented with a unique furuncle on his scalp after returning from a vacation in Belize. Initially unrecognized as a cutaneous manifestation of D. hominis larva, the patient was brought for surgical excision and biopsy of the lesion to a community-based surgical center. This case highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) was innovatively utilized intraoperatively to assist the surgeon i

Efficacy of eprinomectin 5 mg/mL topical solution administered pour on at 1 mg per kg body weight against Przhevalskiana silenus myiasis in goats.

The larvae of the goat warble fly, Przhevalskiana silenus, chiefly parasitize domestic goats. Its occurrence in Europe is restricted to the southeastern Mediterranean and the southern Balkans; however, the parasite is prevalent and of considerable economic impact in the Middle East and in parts of Asia. Eprinomectin 5 mg/mL topical solution (EPRINEX® Multi, Boehringer Ingelheim) administered at 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight pour on was recently authorized as an anthelmintic for sheep and goats with zero hours milk withdrawal in several European countries. Considering that the product in

Traumatic myiasis in animals from Iraq: a five years (2019-2023) survey, and a comprehensive epidemiological overview.

The present study surveyed traumatic myiasis cases admitted to the governmental Veterinary hospitals (belonging to the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture) distributed throughout Iraq, between 2019 and 2023, and highlights the epidemiological changes occurred in comparison to the previous situation. A total of 916 cases were detected in various animals from nine governorates, with an annual average of 183.2 cases/year, which is lower than the corresponding value estimated for the period 1996-2000 (23,510 cases/year) or for 2001-2018 (811.2 cases/year). Cases peaked during early summer, unlike the ea

Palatal Perforation Due to Nasal Myiasis in a Patient With Atrophic Rhinitis: A Case Report.

Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic nasal disease characterized by atrophy of the nasal mucosa and turbinates. Occasionally, nasal myiasis complicates AR. This case illustrates an uncommon complication of nasal myiasis, palatal perforation. A 35-year-old South Asian woman presented with recurrent bilateral epistaxis and expulsion of maggots from the nose. She had a history of nasal obstruction, foul-smelling nasal discharge, and anosmia. On examination, the patient had atrophied nasal turbinates and later developed 2 perforations in the palate. She was offered conservative management for AR. B

Urinary myiasis; a case report and literature review.

Urinary myiasis, a rare condition caused by the infestation of fly larvae in the urinary tract, poses diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific symptoms and low prevalence. We report a 52-year-old woman with persistent dysuria, frequency despite multiple treatments for suspected infections. Cystoscopy revealed erythema and debris, but imaging and laboratory tests were unremarkable. A live larva was identified in urine analysis, confirming the diagnosis. Treatment involved improved hygiene and hydration. Prompt recognition and management is needed to prevent complications. Awareness of this

First Reported Case of Accidental Gastric Myiasis Caused by Gasterophilus Larvae in a Gray Wolf.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is the infestation of living vertebrates by larvae ("maggots") of dipterous flies. These include the Gasterophilus species (Oestridae). Their larvae are obligate endoparasites of equids, and their third instar larvae remain in specific areas of the gastrointestinal tract for many months. Non-equids are unsuitable hosts for Gasterophilus spp. However, their larvae have occasionally been found in the digestive tracts of carnivores and scavengers; this is known as accidental myiasis. METHODS: A gray wolf (Canis lupus) hunted near a settlement in northern Kazakhstan in Februar

Estimation the reinvasion of New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Central America: The role of animal movement in disease dispersal and control measures.

The New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) has reemerged in Central America, posing risks to livestock and public health. Recent outbreaks highlight its northward spread, raising concerns about its potential reintroduction into Mexico. This study uses linear regression models to examine the role of animal movement in the parasite's spread, with a particular focus on human-mediated factors. Our analysis determined a spread rate of 1.2-1.9 km/day for screwworm outbreaks. Furthermore, consecutive outbreak events occurring more than 50 km apart suggest a strong association with animal movem

Report of Oestrus sp. larvae in the nasal cavity of sheep from the Azores archipelago.

The presence of Oestrus sp. in sheep is a parasitic condition that has been widely reported in most regions of the world. However, to date, there are no documented records of this parasitosis in the Azores archipelago, Portugal. This study describes the first occurrence of Oestrus sp. in a sheep on Terceira Island, Azores, identified during necropsy, with the animal showed signs of lethargy, anorexia and loss of body condition before death, which may have resulted from multiple factors rather than exclusively from Oestrus sp. Infestation. During the post-mortem examination, five Oestrus sp. la
