Calliphoridae are known for their role in nutrient cycling and forensic entomology, as well as transmitting pathogens and causing myiasis. This study aimed to investigate the diversity of Calliphoridae in Campo de Santana, Rio de Janeiro, and assess their response to the type and decomposition time of animal baits. Four traps baited with sardines and 4 with bovine liver at different stages of decomposition (0 h, 48 h, and 96 h) were installed at georeferenced points for 8 h. The procedure was repeated over 4 wk. Insects were stored at -5°C for preservation until taxonomic identification was pe

Myiasis infection is caused by the invasion of flies' eggs and larvae into different tissues of the host's body. The rarest form is urogenital myiasis, which can occur even in men with a much lower probability than women, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The case of this study is a 5-year-old boy from suburbs of Bushehr City, southern Iran who referred to the Pediatrics Department of Persian Gulf Hospital in Bushehr due to constant fever and significant weight loss. In urine evaluation, the presence of Chrysomya bezziana larvae was confirmed. The larvae of several species of myi

The Calliphoridae are one of the main Diptera families that include agents of the parasitic disease condition known as myiasis. Parasitism seems to have evolved multiple independent times within the Calliphoridae; consequently, this family includes a diversity of myiasis-causing species, varying in their obligate or facultative habits and in their specific location in the host. Larval morphological studies can provide novel and relevant insights into the biology of those species, as well as on the pathogenesis and evolution of myiasis; however, the anatomy of internal organs and structures -pa

Myiasis refers to the infestation of human and animal tissues by fly larvae. Oral myiasis is a relatively rare condition typically affecting individuals with low socio-economic status and poor hygiene. This case report describes a 21-year-old male patient with a history of chronic smoking and ischemic stroke, who developed oral myiasis following intubation for glioblastoma surgery. After 10 days post-operation, multiple larvae were identified in the oral cavity. Manual extraction and treatment with metronidazole were performed, leading to initial healing. However, the patient subsequently deve

Since the first documented case of Cephenemyia stimulator in Spain in 2001, this myiasis has experienced rapid expansion, with the first case also detected in 2021 in Portugal. Between January 2020 and October 2024, a study was carried out in northern Spain (Cantabria, Galicia, País Vasco and Principado de Asturias) and Portugal (Bragança, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real) to evaluate the presence and distribution of this myiasis in these areas. The prevalence of infestation was 76.6 ± 4.72% (95% CI) and 38.78 ± 13.78% (95% CI), with a mean intensity of 62.27 ± 104.40 and 37.74 ± 36.84 larvae pe

BACKGROUND: Myiasis caused by the sheep nasal botfly is endemic in countries where sheep and goats are largely reared, while humans serve as incidental hosts. Ophthalmomyiasis in humans caused by Oestrus ovis is documented globally but is most prevalent in Mediterranean countries, highlighting the significance of this myiasis as a neglected disease.
METHOD: A thorough questionnaire covering frequency of disease occurrence, seasonal patterns, and management of O. ovis was forwarded to clinicians in Italy gathering data from 100 respondents across diverse regional and occupational backgrounds.

Ectoparasites can severely impact wildlife species, both through their feeding behaviour and by facilitating secondary infestations or bacterial infections. Here, we report on two cases of periorbital damage caused by ixodid tick infestations in cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), including a rare record of traumatic myiasis in wildlife. Both cheetahs were recently reintroduced to the Marromeu-Coutada Complex in Central Mozambique and had sustained relatively severe injuries. This ostensibly yielded them immunocompromised and thus more vulnerable to tick infestations, particularly when exposed to nov

Flies and maggots are of medical importance, and it is often necessary to identify them at species level. Conventionally, this is carried out based on morphological features using taxonomic keys. However, identification of maggots based on morphology is difficult and required entomological expertise is often lacking in clinical settings. Molecular methods can be an alternative to morphology-based identification and find special application when only tiny pieces of specimens are available especially in cases of human myiasis. In this preliminary study, we explored the utility of mitochondrial C

Myiasis, a parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae in necrotic tissue, is rare in urban settings but can complicate conditions like advanced pelvic organ prolapse (POP). This report highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of myiasis in a patient with grade IV POP. An 85-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with a four-year history of vaginal mass protrusion, recent bleeding, foul discharge, and necrotic tissue. Examination revealed grade IV POP with left-sided necrotic tissue (4 × 4 cm) infested with larvae. Laboratory findings showed leukocytosis (17.57 × 10³/µL), elevated

Invasive tracheal mucormycosis is a rare but fatal opportunistic infection, particularly common in immunocompromised patients. This case report describes a 23-year-old female diabetic patient who developed invasive tracheal mucormycosis following a tracheostomy. The mucormycosis infection was brought under control after antifungal therapy and surgical debridement; however, due to multiple contributing factors, the patient subsequently developed myiasis. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, aggressive treatment, and proper tracheostomy management in preventing severe complica

We report a case of myiasis in the poison frog Oophaga sylvatica from the Canandé Reserve located in the Chocó region of northwestern Ecuador. We identified the causal agents as larvae of flesh flies, Sarcophagidae, by means of DNA barcoding and morphological features. This represents the first record of myiasis in an anuran in Ecuador and the second record for Dendrobatidae in the Neotropics. This observation may constitute a case of facultative parasitism where larvae are deposited in the frog's wounds, but further research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms underlying this in

Lucilia cuprina, a species of blowfly, consists of two recognized subspecies: L. cuprina cuprina and L. cuprina dorsalis. Although they are morphologically and molecularly similar to each other, they have very different ecological roles. In Australia, L. c. dorsalis is predominantly found in rural areas and is the primary causative agent of sheep myiasis (flystrike), while L. c. cuprina is necrophagous and not a significant pest of livestock in the Americas or elsewhere. Here, we present a chromosome-scale genome assembly for L. c. cuprina and an improved assembly for L. c. dorsalis, enabling

Myiasis is a rare parasitic infestation caused by dipteran larvae, primarily from the Calliphoridae, Oestridae, and Sarcophagidae families. Though often benign, myiasis can lead to severe secondary infections. In this case report, we describe the first fatal case of gingival and tracheopulmonary myiasis caused by Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in an HIV/AIDS patient with probable histoplasmosis. The patient, a 47-yr-old male from Manzanillo, Mexico, presented with systemic infection, pancytopenia, and multiple organ failure. Upon admission, oral larval infesta

BACKGROUND: The blowfly Lucilia cuprina is a destructive parasite of sheep that causes flystrike or myiasis. Larvae consume the animal's living flesh, producing large wounds that can lead to death. The main aim of this study was to identify genes that may play important roles in the behavior and physiology of L. cuprina larvae.
METHODS: An RNA-Seq analysis of RNA from whole larvae at different developmental stages and third-instar head and gut tissues was used to identify sensory receptors and other genes relevant to the physiology of L. cuprina larvae. In addition, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing w

BACKGROUND: Hippobosca camelina (camel ked) is an obligate hematophagous ectoparasite that infests camels. Hematophagy inflicts painful bites leading to myiasis, anemia and pathogen transmission such as Candidatus Anaplasma camelii. A genome assembly for this biting flies is currently unavailable, limiting understanding of its genetics, including the chemosensory system.
RESULTS: The assembly size for Hippobosca camelina female is 135.6 Mb with 17.08% repeated regions, an N50 of 1.2 Mb, a total of 2,182 contigs, a GC content of 33.5% and compleasm (Busco) completeness of 95.38% with the dipte

Cobboldia elephantis (Oestridae: Gasterophilinae) is an obligate parasite of the alimentary tract of the Asian elephant, causing gastric myiasis. Current knowledge of its first instar larval morphology has been limited to observations under light microscopy, significantly constraining our understanding of morphological evolution within the genus Cobboldia and the broader subfamily Gasterophilinae. In this study, we provided ultrastructural and three-dimensional characterizations of C. elephantis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) based on new
