UNLABELLED: Central fracture dislocation of the hip with associated ipsilateral femoral neck fracture is exceedingly rare and presents a formidable management challenge.
CASE: A 31-year-old woman sustained this fracture with medial displacement of the femoral head into the pelvic cavity after a high-energy road traffic accident. Within 6 hours, surgical reduction of the femoral head and internal fixation of both femoral neck and acetabulum were performed using a dynamic hip screw and a plate, respectively. At 1 year, the patient demonstrated good functional recovery without avascular necrosis

CONTEXT: Climate change and anthropogenic stressors are degrading coastal biogenic habitats, disrupting the vital pathways fish use to shift from nearshore nurseries to offshore reef environments. Although fishes are critical for ecosystem health, spatial management rarely accounts for the interconnectedness of fish habitat needs across their life cycle.
OBJECTIVES: To examine and compare drivers of habitat use for subadult size classes of five habitat-shifting fishes from two feeding guilds: mesopredators and herbivores. To assess the multi-species suitability of existing management zones.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

We aimed to examine the outcomes of arthritic congenital dislocation of hip in adults after subtrochanteric shortening derotation osteotomy (SSDO) with cementless hip arthroplasty at a minimum follow-up period of five years. Bibliographic databases were searched and isolated studies were divided into three groups (1, 2, and 3) based on the femoral stem type (modular, monoblock, or mixed). We pooled 931 hips/737 patients from 20 studies. The mean difference in the Harris hip score (HHS) before and after the operation was 47.55 (95% confidence interval [CI] 43.16, 51.94). On subgroup analysis th

Introduction Total hip replacement (THR) dislocation occurs when the prosthetic joint components completely separate, indicating a failure in the intended mechanics of the hip joint established by the prosthesis. This complication poses significant challenges for patients and surgeons and financially burdens healthcare systems. Methods This retrospective observational study evaluated cases of prosthetic hip dislocation within our health board that required manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) from January 1, 2021, to March 5, 2024. A total of 60 patients met the inclusion criteria. Patient data

INTRODUCTION: Anterior hip dislocations are less common in orthopedic casualties than posterior and are associated with concurrent injuries such as acetabulum fracture, femoral head fracture, or unstable pelvic injuries. Rarer still, is the obturator dislocation of the hip, with only a handful cases described in the literature with no established treatment protocols.
CASE REPORT: We treated a young male injured in a car accident and sustained an anterior hip dislocation (obturator type) with a concomitant fracture of the ipsilateral greater trochanter. This type of injury is rare and there is

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been a growing utilization of minimally invasive (MI) techniques, which provide the potential advantages of minimizing surgical stress, post-operative pain, and hospitalization duration. Nevertheless, the existing body of literature primarily comprises of studies conducted at a single medical site, which are of low quality and lack a comprehensive analysis of treatment techniques exclusively focused on spondylolisthesis. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to compare minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and open surgery (OS) spinal fusion ou

Pipkin type IV fracture dislocation of the hip is a rare, high-energy injury, that is associated with poor functional outcomes and complications. We report a case of a 20-year old male quarterback who sustained a Pipkin type IV fracture dislocation during a football game. He underwent immediate closed reduction, transfer to a Level I trauma centre, surgical management, and progressive rehabilitation. Clinical and radiographic assessments were carried out periodically for 1 year. At 10 months post-injury, the athlete returned to full-time play as the starting quarterback of his University footb

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric hip fractures comprised <1% of all pediatric fractures. These fractures are usually associated with high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or fall from height. The Delbet classification of pediatric hip fractures is frequently used to describe these injuries and to relate the fracture type to the development of avascular necrosis. Treatment should be given as an emergency basis and monitored according to the type of fracture and the patient's age. Historically, casting was used for such fractures; however, due to the high complication rate, the treatment mo

Introduction Femoral head fractures, specifically Pipkin Type I and Type II, are uncommon injuries often linked with posterior hip dislocations. Management strategies for these fractures range from conservative treatments to various surgical procedures, with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) being a notable option. The surgical approach for ORIF varies, and due to the rarity of the injury, a standardized management protocol is lacking. This study aims to evaluate the outcome of managing Pipkin Type I and Type II femoral head fractures using ORIF through Ganz surgical dislocation of t

There are instances where a patient's prosthetic hip is unable to be dislocated intraoperatively during a conversion or revision arthroplasty, despite scar removal and standard dislocation maneuvers. We describe a technique that involves an in situ disassociation of the femoral head component from the trunnion without the need for additional osteotomies. This maneuver may be beneficial in cases of protrusio, muscular stiffness, high soft tissue tension, arthrofibrosis, and ankylosis due to heterotopic ossification, as well as cases that involve a large femoral head or acetabular constraint. We

INTRODUCTION: This report highlights a rare case of complex metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint dislocation, commonly referred to as Kaplan's lesion. This type of dislocation typically results from a hyperextension injury and requires surgical intervention as closed maneuvers are unsuccessful in reducing the dislocation. Surgical reduction for complex MCP joint dislocations is commonly done through classic volar or dorsal approaches. This report presents a case of a complex MCP joint dislocation and the surgical approach taken to address the issue.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a complex MCP

BACKGROUND: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA, OMIM #256800), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type Ⅳ (HSAN-IV), is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by recurrent episodic fevers, anhidrosis, insensitivity to noxious stimuli, self-mutilating behavior and intellectual disability. CIPA can be caused by the variants in NTRK1 gene, which encodes a high-affinity tyrosine kinase receptor for nerve growth factor. To ascertain the hereditary cause of a patient with CIPA accompanied by the additional symptoms of mild growth retardation, pron

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric hip dislocation is a rare event in the pediatric population. The management involves a timely diagnosis and emergent reduction for successful outcome.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 2-year-old male patient with a posterior dislocation of hip. The child underwent an emergent closed reduction using Allis maneuver. Subsequently, the child had an uneventful recovery and resumed his functional activity completely.
CONCLUSION: Posterior hip dislocation in a child is an extremely rare entity. The key to management in such a case is to timely diagnose and reduce it.
