INTRODUCTION: Traumatic dislocation of the hip in children is a rare injury. We report the outcome of 2 patients of neglected hip dislocation which were treated by open reduction and internal fixation by k-wires.
CASE REPORT: We treat 2 children both girls (one was of 4 years and other was 7 years of age). In both cases dislocation was unilateral and was not associated with any facture. Both cases were of posterior dislocation. in both cases open reduction and internal fixation was done by k wires. Hip spica was applied post operatively in both cases. The k wire was removed at 3 to 4 weeks. P

INTRODUCTION: Incidence of nerve injury in traumatic hip dislocations is up to 10 %. Sciatic nerve is the most common injured nerve in this setting. In the medical literature, there are few documented cases of femoral nerve injury following hip dislocations.
CASE REPORT: We report a 44-year-old man with right femoral nerve palsy following delayed reduction of an anterior dislocation of hip.
CONCLUSION: Two months after closed reduction, complete clinical recovery of right femoral nerve was achieved and the patient was able to resume his job.

Osteonecrosis in isolated fractures of the acetabulum without dislocation of hip seems to be a known complication, but to our knowledge it has not been reported adequately. The causative nature of post-traumatic femoral head osteonecrosis has not been studied critically. The pathophysiology of osteonecrosis in this case also eludes us. Striking evidence points towards the intra-operative blood loss and low mean arterial pressure possibly leading to hypo-perfusion of femoral head leading to osteonecrosis. Fractures of the acetabulum pose a difficult problem for the patient and the surgeon becau

BACKGROUND: The optimal management of elderly patients with displaced acetabular fractures remains controversial. This paper aims to summarize the clinical results of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and the possible factors influencing them.
METHODS: Radiographic and clinical data on 52 elderly patients with displaced acetabular fractures that were treated by ORIF between May 2000 and May 2008 were retrospectively analysed. Data, such as fracture type (Letournel's classification system), quality of reduction, clinical outcomes (Harris hip score and modified Merle d'Aubigne-Postel

Hip dysplasia and femoroacetabular impingement are frequent causes of hip pain and can often be treated with joint preserving surgery to prevent secondary osteoarthritis (OA). Patient education, progressive resistance training and weight loss at a BMI > 27 kg/m(2) has documented effect on pain and function in primary hip OA. If wound infection occurs after total hip arthroplasty the patient should not be treated with peroral antibiotics but instead be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon. There is no documentation that post-operative movement restrictions prevent dislocation of hip after total h

Congenital dislocation of the knee popularly known as genu recurvatum; is a very rare condition, about 0.45% of all congenital anomalies. Furthermore isolated genu recurvatum is extremely rare because 60% of this condition is associated with other congenital anomalies. Congenital dislocation of hip is the commonest associated anomaly. Two babies 1 male and 1 female were born with severe hyperextension deformity of the knees about 30° degrees. Clinically and radiologically they were diagnosed as isolated genu recurvatum due to congenital dislocation of the knees. Gentle manipulation in the form

AIM: Surgical dislocation of hip is used to treat a variety of hip conditions. We report our experience of the approach in excision of benign tumours of the hip.
METHODS: This is a review of the cases presenting with benign tumours to a tertiary care complex hip clinic. Data was collected prospectively. All patients were radiologically investigated before surgery for anatomical detail. Surgical dislocation was carried out by the senior surgeon in all cases. Non-Arthritic Young Hip Scores were done preoperatively and at 12 months. All patients are under annual follow-up.
RESULTS: There were 9

INTRODUCTION: Osteomyelitis of the pelvis can be a difficult condition to diagnose and can present in a number of different ways. The ilium is the bone most frequently affected and staphylococcus aureus is the organism most commonly responsible.
CASEREPORT: This case report describes a six year old girl, who presented with right sided hip pain, fevers and altered weight bearing. She was initially diagnosed with septic arthritis of the hip and underwent open joint washout. A magnet resonance imaging scan was subsequently performed which confirmed the diagnosis of iliac osteomyelitis with absce

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a serious complication in the management of developmental dislocation of the hip. Increasing the abduction angle increases its stability but compromises the vascularity of the femoral head. From our database of 240 children treated for developmental dislocation of hip by the two senior authors between 1998 and 2008, we defined two groups of children who underwent closed or medial open reduction of the hip after a failed Pavlik treatment or if patients presented late. In group 1, the reduced hip was immobilized in around 90° flexion, 60° abduction

Hip dislocation in children can occur congenitally in isolation or in conjunction with other congenital abnormalities. Traumatic hip dislocations in children are relatively uncommon and anterior dislocation of hip joint is even rarer. We report such a case following unusual mode of injury in a 12-year-old child. The patient underwent successful emergent closed reduction of left hip. The clinical course and follow-up assessment of the patient was otherwise uneventful. At 2 years' follow-up there was no evidence of osteoarthritis, coxa magna, heterotrophic calcification, in congruency of the joi

BACKGROUND: In the literature, the dislocation rate for hip prostheses is stated to be 2-3%. Dislocation may have several causes, such as aspects of the patient, the surgeon, the type of prosthesis or the operation. The objective of this study was to identify the frequency, causes and treatment of dislocation in our department.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material encompasses all patients operated on with a hip prosthesis at the Department of Orthopaedics, Haugesund Hospital, from 1987 through 2011. Information has been collected retrospectively from databases and patient records after an avera

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC) is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia characterized by short stature, diminished joint mobility, dislocation of hip, absent femoral head ossification, scoliosis and flattened vertebral bodies. SEDC is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the type II procollagen α-1 chain (COL2A1). We screened COL2A1 gene mutations in four affected individuals from a Chinese family with SEDC. A novel missense mutation c.3257G>T (p.G1086V), which located in the triple-helical domain, was identified in the SEDC patients. Our study extends the mutation spectr

In total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) with high hip dislocation, it can be technically challenging to locate the true acetabulum and restore limb length without subtrochantric femoral shortening osteotomy. We explored and described total hip arthroplasty without subtrochanteric femoral shortening osteotomy in 28 hips with Crowe type III and IV dislocation by intravenous injection of rocuronium at 0.9mg/kg 1minute before reduction and hip reduction combined with continuous strong traction of the affected limb with patients in a position with hip

Developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH) is one entity one occasionally comes across while in a busy orthopaedic or paediatric outpatient department. The knowledge of risk factors and awareness of the condition is must for every orthopaedic surgeon and paediatrician as well lest the diagnosis will be missed. An early diagnosis can alter the prognosis of the disease and prevent late disabilities.
