Analysis of segmental coordination in the lower extremity using vector coding: a pilot return-to-play study of acute ankle sprain.

Purpose: Acute ankle sprain may affect ankle function during sport and daily activities. This study aimed to use vector coding technique to analyze the difference over time between injured and healthy lower limb during the first week of acute ankle sprain phase (P1) and post a 1-month recovery phase (P2) to understand the return-to-play coordination strategy in the lower extremity. Methods: Six females attended the gait experiments with attached 40 reflective markers using eight-camera Vicon motion capture system. All participants walked barefoot while turning in four directions (T0°, T45°, T9

Managing lower extremity loading in distance running by altering sagittal plane trunk leaning.

BACKGROUND: Trunk lean angle is an underrepresented biomechanical variable for modulating and redistributing lower extremity joint loading and potentially reducing the risk of running-related overuse injuries. The purpose of this study was to systematically alter the trunk lean angle in distance running using an auditory real-time feedback approach and to derive dose-response relationships between sagittal plane trunk lean angle and lower extremity (cumulative) joint loading to guide overuse load management in clinical practice. METHODS: Thirty recreational runners (15 males and 15 females) r

Risk of carpal tunnel syndrome among patients with osteoarthritis: a US population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), an entrapment neuropathy caused by pressure of the median nerve, is a progressive condition that can lead to a decreased quality of life. Studies suggest an association between CTS and arthritis; however, previous studies examining osteoarthritis (OA) and CTS are limited in number, scope and study design. This study estimated the incidence and risk of CTS among patients with OA, both overall and by specific joints, in a large population-based cohort in the United States. METHODS: Patients from the Optum claims database aged ≥ 45 years and diagnosed wi

Reversal of atherosclerosis by restoration of vascular copper homeostasis.

The objective of this study was to describe and analyse the changes in working conditions and health among dairy farmers in Scania in southern Sweden during the period 1988-2002 by a repeat of a mail-in survey. Altogether, 83 % of the male and 90 % of the female dairy farmers reported some kind of symptoms in the musculoskeletal system during the 12 months prior to the 2002 questionnaire. This is an increase compared to the farmers in 1988. The highest significant changes were an increase of symptoms in the shoulder, neck and in the wrists/hands. The milkers reported most often incidental as w

Traumatic isolated bilateral gluteus minimus injuries misdiagnosed as lumbar radiculopathy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The tear of the gluteus medius and minimus tendons can cause chronic buttock pain, especially in middle-aged individuals; these tears occur mostly in association with degenerative changes in the muscles and tendons. Chronic injuries are more common than acute injuries, and concurrent injuries to the gluteus medius and minimus tendons without chronic pain are rare, especially isolated injuries to both sides of the gluteus minimus; such a case has not yet been reported. CASE SUMMARY: The authors present a case of bilateral acute traumatic injuries to the gluteus minimus during butto

Clinical Outcomes Following Incomplete Arthroscopic Iliotibial Band Release for External Snapping Hip Syndrome: An Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Arthroscopic treatment is indicated for external snapping hip (ESH) syndrome in patients refractory to conservative treatment, but snapping does not disappear completely in some case. No previous studies have described the clinical course of ESH syndrome in patients who presented with persistent snapping after an arthroscopic procedure. We demonstrated the clinical outcomes following an incomplete arthroscopic iliotibial band (ITB) release for ESH syndrome. METHODS: This retrospective observational study was performed at two teaching hospitals between October 2015 and December 202

Iliotibial Band Origin Tendinopathy Is an Underrecognized Cause of Anterolateral Hip Pain: A Narrative Review and Clinical Commentary.

Hip pain is a common concern among athletes. With gluteal tendinopathy, femoroacetabular impingement, and osteoarthritis predominating sports medicine and musculoskeletal practices, less common etiologies may be overlooked. Complex pelvic anatomy and variable pain referral patterns may make identifying an accurate diagnosis challenging. Employing a systematic approach to evaluation and having a thorough understanding of hip region anatomy are essential. A potentially overlooked cause of anterolateral hip pain is iliotibial band origin tendinopathy. Patients often present with pain around the a

Current iliotibial band syndrome alters patterns of running coordination in male and female runners, but not their levels of coordination variability.

The aim of the present study was to compare the coordination patterns and levels of coordination variability of healthy and injured runners with iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). Sixty runners divided into four groups (15 healthy males, 15 healthy females, 15 males with ITBS and 15 females with ITBS) ran at a steady and freely chosen pace on an over-ground track, and their coordination patterns of the lower limbs were calculated during 10 running stances using the vector coding technique. Both male and female runners with ITBS showed a greater dominance of the pelvis segment and the anti-phase

Capsular and retinaculum thickening in type II mucopolysaccharidosis: a novel MRI finding.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of inherited lysosomal storage diseases caused by a deficiency of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) catalytic enzymes, resulting in an accumulation of unprocessed or partly degraded GAGs in different tissues, including bones and joints. Notably, skeletal and joint abnormalities may be the first complaint that prompts patients to seek medical attention, especially in the milder forms of the disease. To our knowledge, there are no prior imaging reports that have documented capsuloligamentous thickening in patients with MPS on MRI. In this study, we present four case

Epidemiology of Injuries in Professional and Amateur Football Men (Part II).

Background (1): Men's football is a physically demanding contact sport that involves intermittent bouts of sprinting, jogging, walking, jumping and changes of direction. The physical demands of the game vary by level of play (amateur club, sub-elite and open club or international), but injury rates at all levels of the men's football game remain the highest of all sports. Objective: The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of data from the epidemiological literature regarding the profile, severity and mechanisms of injuries and the frequency of recurrent injuries in professional

Lower extremity kinematics during running and hip abductor strength in iliotibial band syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Iliotibial band syndrome is a common overuse injury that is twice as likely to affect female runners compared to male runners. It is unclear if there is a consistent running pattern and strength profile exhibited by female and male runners with iliotibial band syndrome. RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine if any differences existed in lower-extremity kinematics and hip strength between runners who retrospectively, currently, or prospectively had iliotibial band syndrome. METHODS: Papers included must have reported three-dime

[Research progress of lower limb muscle strength training in the treatment of lliotibial band syndrome].

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), as an overused injury of the lower extremities, has developed into a common cause of lateral knee pain. At present, the treatment of ITBS includes drug therapy, muscle strength training, physical therapy, and surgical treatment. Among these methods, physical therapy, drug therapy, and surgical treatment can only alleviate the symptoms of patients. As a safe and effective treatment, lower limb muscle strength training can improve patients' muscle strength, correct abnormal gait, and reduce the recurrence rate of the disease by paying attention to the dynamic cha

Inconsistencies and Imprecision in the Nomenclature Used to Describe Primary Periphyseal Stress Injuries: Towards a Better Understanding.

Stress injuries involving the epiphyseal-physeal-metaphyseal complex affecting the extremities of child and adolescent athletes were first described in the early 1950s. Initially observed in Little League baseball players, these injuries are now known to affect skeletally immature athletes in a variety of sports that involve high-impact repetitive overuse activities. Collectively known as primary periphyseal stress injuries, they may affect the long bones around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot of young athletes. These injuries respond well to timely treatment and r
