Biomechanical compensations during a stand-to-sit maneuver using transfemoral osseointegrated prostheses: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Patients with transfemoral amputation and socket prostheses are at a heightened risk of developing musculoskeletal overuse injuries, commonly due to altered joint biomechanics. Osseointegrated prostheses, which involve direct anchorage of the prosthesis to the residual limb through a bone anchored prosthesis, are a novel alternative to sockets yet their biomechanical effect is largely unknown. METHODS: Four patients scheduled to undergo unilateral transfemoral prosthesis osseointegration completed two data collections (baseline with socket prosthesis and 12-months after prosthesis

Growth, maturation and injuries in high-level youth football (soccer): A mini review.

Understanding the challenges football (soccer) players face during adolescence is fundamental to avoid disruptions in their development due to injury. This mini review will describe basic concepts of somatic growth and biological maturity, examine data from 53 prospective epidemiological studies on high-level youth football players and discuss how age, growth and maturity may affect the injury patterns observed. Based on the existing evidence, at least every third player sustains an injury during a football season. The thigh (median for studies of boys: 25%, median for girls: 21%), ankle (b: 1

Biomechanics associated with tibial stress fracture in runners: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tibial stress fracture (TSF) is an overuse running injury with a long recovery period. While many running studies refer to biomechanical risk factors for TSF, only a few have compared biomechanics in runners with TSF to controls. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate biomechanics in runners with TSF compared to controls. METHODS: Electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, Cochrane, and CINAHL were searched. Risk of bias was assessed and meta-analysis conducted for variables reported in 3 or more studies. RESULTS: The search ret

Arithmetic statistics of Prym surfaces.

Ultra-low-density elastomeric foams enable lightweight systems that combine high compliance with efficient energy return. Their mechanical response is inherently complex, characterized by high compressibility, nonlinear elasticity, and microstructural heterogeneity. In high-performance racing shoes, these foams are critical for low weight, high cushioning, and efficient energy return; yet, their constitutive behavior remains difficult to model and poorly understood. Here we integrate mechanical testing and machine learning to discover the mechanics of two ultra-low density elastomeric polymeri

Comparing Functional Motor Control Exercises With Therapeutic Exercise in Wrestlers With Iliotibial Band Syndrome.

CONTEXT: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a common overuse injury in runners with parallels to our findings of overuse in Greco Roman wrestlers. Despite research indicating coordination and movement-based factors about the hip, no studies were found using functional motor control (FMC) in runners or wrestlers with ITBS. Thus, we compared FMC exercises and therapeutic exercises (TEs) on pain, function, muscle strength, and range of motion (ROM) in national-level Greco Roman wrestlers with ITBS. DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Sixty national-level Greco Roman wrestlers diagnose

Effect of Flat Running Shoes on Hip Kinematics in Male Recreational Runners.

Patellofemoral joint pain and iliotibial band syndrome are very common running-related injuries. Excessive contralateral pelvic drop, hip adduction, and hip internal rotation have been suggested to be associated with the two injuries. The purpose of this repeated measures and the cross-sectional study was to investigate the effect of flat running shoes on these kinematic variables compared with that of conventional running shoes with a 10 mm drop. Eighteen male recreational runners were recruited to run in flat shoes and conventional shoes with a 10 mm drop, in random order. Impact force data

Imaging of Overuse Injuries of the Hip.

Overuse injuries of the hip are common, and clinical diagnosis may be difficult because of overlapping and nonspecific clinical symptoms. Imaging can play an essential role in guiding diagnosis and management. Femoroacetabular joint structural abnormalities result in various conditions that can predispose patients to early development of osteoarthritis. Repetitive stress on the skeletally immature hip can result in apophyseal injuries. Notable nonosseous overuse hip pathologies include athletic pubalgia, trochanteric bursitis, and injuries involving the iliopsoas myotendinous unit. Timely diag

Orthopaedic Injuries Associated With Cell Phone Use Resulting in Emergency Department Visits: A 20-Year Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cell phones are an integral part of daily life but are distractors that can contribute to injury. The present study uses a large national emergency department (ED) database to evaluate the frequency, anatomic location, and type of injuries associated with cell phone use. We hypothesize that orthopaedic injuries related to cell phone use have increased over time and affect certain body parts and age groups more than others. METHODS: The 1999 to 2018 Nation Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried for cell phone-related injuries leading to ED visits (injuries to the head

Femoral neck strain prediction during level walking using a combined musculoskeletal and finite element model approach.

Recently, coupled musculoskeletal-finite element modelling approaches have emerged as a way to investigate femoral neck loading during various daily activities. Combining personalised gait data with finite element models will not only allow us to study changes in motion/movement, but also their effects on critical internal structures, such as the femur. However, previous studies have been hampered by the small sample size and the lack of fully personalised data in order to construct the coupled model. Therefore, the aim of this study was to build a pipeline for a fully personalised multiscale

Site-specific features of active muscle stiffness and proximal aponeurosis strain in biceps femoris long head.

Limited information is available on site-specific features of muscle stiffness and aponeurosis strain of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) during contractions. Therefore, understanding of the mechanics and etiology of hamstring strain injuries remains difficult. As a first step to gain further insight into them, the present study aimed to identify whether active muscle stiffness and proximal aponeurosis strain during contractions are varied along the long axis of the BFlh. The BFlh muscle shear wave speed (proxy for stiffness) was measured in the proximal, central, and distal sites during 20
