OBJECTIVE: A recent spurt in incidence of meralgia paresthetica to 0.1-81% due to minimally invasive anterior approach to hip joint has resulted in reinterest in anatomy of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). Familiarity with variations in the course of LFCN will reduce the morbidity associated with orthopedic procedures around the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and inguinal ligament (IL).
METHODS: Twenty five adult human formalin embalmed cadavers were dissected. Course and relations of nerve to ASIS, IL and sartorius muscle was noted, distance of nerve from ASIS at IL was measured

BACKGROUND: Direct anterior approach (DAA) has several advantages including shorter length of hospital stay, faster recovery, and better functional outcome while this approach may cause damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) as high as 81% in the works of literature. Not much data has identified the LFCN pattern in the Asian population. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to identify characteristics of the LFCN patterns representing an Asian hip, which would aid to provide the most appropriate incision of modified direct anterior approach (MDAA) for total hip arthroplasty (TH

Objectives: To document the anatomical variation of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) at the proximal aspect of the thigh and to determine its susceptibility to injury during total hip arthroplasty via a direct anterior approach (DAA).Methods: We obtained 64 thighs from formalin-preserved cadavers of 45 Japanese individuals. LFCN was identified at the level of the inguinal ligament. All nerve branches of the LFCN were carefully traced distally in the subcutaneous tissue. The branching pattern and distribution at the proximal aspect of the thigh were described. A safe zone to avoid LFC

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2019eng
PURPOSE: To (1) evaluate the individual and combined effects of traction time and traction force on postoperative neuropathy following hip arthroscopy, (2) determine if perioperative fascia iliaca block has an effect on the risk of this neuropathy, and (3) identify if the these items had a significant association with the presence, location, and/or duration of postoperative numbness.
METHODS: Between February 2015 and December 2016, a consecutive cohort of hip arthroscopy patients was prospectively enrolled. Traction time, force, and postoperative nerve block administration were recorded. The

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive endoscopic reconstruction of avulsion injuries of the proximal hamstring insertion to prevent persistent weakness and pain.
INDICATIONS: Fresh retracted 2‑ and 3‑tendon avulsion injuries of the proximal hamstring insertion. Unsuccessful conservative therapy of less retracted injuries. Painful chronic partial lesions of the proximal hamstring insertion.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Major comorbidities with an increased surgical risk, older patients with low functional demands. Chronic injuries without functional deficits.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: Endoscopic refixation using su

BACKGROUND: The retroperitoneal trans-psoas extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) technique has improved over the last decade with increased efficiency and an emphasis on complication avoidance. After all known procedural safeguards are enacted, the most common failure of neuro-monitoring precision may be the use of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants (MR) for induction that is standard of care for anesthesia. Even when non-depolarizing MRs are minimized there is often a small dose given to decrease risk of vocal cord injury with intubation. The most common neurological adverse events (AE) att

An 11-year-old child was able to walk independently even though he had injured his femoral nerve severely due to a penetrating wound in the medial thigh. In this study, gait analysis was conducted five times totally for 16 months to observe the characteristics of the gait parameters, which enabled him to walk independently. The cadence, walking speed, stride length, step length, stride time, step time, double limb support, and single limb support all improved after the third test (GA3). Insufficient knee flexion during the stance phase, that was the main problem of the subject, improved from 0

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
OBJECTIVE: To determine complications within the first year after undergoing extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There are a growing but limited number of reports in the literature regarding early postoperative complications after XLIF.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of perioperative complications of a case series of the first 108 patients to undergo XLIF at our institution between 2007 and 2009. We also recorded estimated blood loss, surgical time, and hospital length of stay for each procedure.

BACKGROUND: There is limited literature looking at comprehensive complication rates after arthroscopic hip procedures.
PURPOSE: To prospectively report complication rates for a consecutive series of hips undergoing arthroscopic procedures.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Over a 29-month period, 1615 consecutive hips in patients with a mean age of 30.5 years underwent arthroscopic hip procedures at 4 institutions. The diagnosis, demographic information, and procedures were recorded, and a validated grading classification for complications of hip joint surgery was ut

INTRODUCTION: Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) injury is a risk specific to the direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, prevention strategies have not been established. This study aimed to identify the predisposing factors determining LFCN injury during THA via a DAA.
HYPOTHESIS: Patients with LFCN injury after THA via DAA would demonstrate predisposing factors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: LFCN injury was identified using a patient questionnaire. Potential factors predisposing to LFCN injury were identified in four categories in patient records: patient fact

OBJECT: This is a retrospective analysis of 353 surgically treated sciatic nerve lesions in which injury mechanisms, location, time to surgical repair, surgical techniques, and functional outcomes are reported. Results are presented to provide guidelines for management of these injuries.
METHODS: One hundred seventy-five patients with buttock-level and 178 with thigh-level sciatic nerve injury were surgically treated at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center between 1968 and 1999. Buttock-level injury mechanisms included injection in 64 patients, hip fracture/dislocation in 26,

OBJECT: The authors present a retrospective analysis of 119 surgically treated femoral nerve lesions at intrapelvic and thigh levels seen at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
METHODS: Femoral nerve lesions treated between 1967 and 2000, (89 traumatic injuries and 30 tumors and cystic lesions) were evaluated for injury mechanisms, resulting lesions, surgical management, and postoperative functional outcomes by using retrospective chart reviews. The most common injury mechanism was iatrogenic (52 cases), which occurred after hernia and hip operations (10 each), followed by

Eighteen cases of iatrogenic femoral nerve injury are described. In two patients the damage was incurred as a result of an intra-abdominal operation. In three others the nerve was injured at the level of the inguinal ligament. In the majority femoral nerve palsy followed surgery to the hip joint and was attributable to a lesion-in-continuity. Only one of the patients in the series made a full recovery, but because only severe cases were included these disappointing results by no means represent the expected outcome. To avoid this serious and distressing complication of surgery, the surgeon mus
