The cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB, Psylliodes chrysocephala L) is a major pest of oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus L), especially in temperate regions where it is challenging the sustainable production of the crop. Conventional management has relied almost exclusively on synthetic insecticides, yet increasing regulatory restrictions, pest resistance and environmental concerns require the urgent development of alternative strategies. Semiochemicals, chemical cues that mediate inter- and intraspecific behavioural interactions, offer considerable potential for integration into push-pull pest ma

BACKGROUND: Australia was declared malaria free in 1981. However, the proximity of Australia's Torres Strait region to malaria-endemic Papua New Guinea (PNG), and the presence of the Anopheles mosquito across Northern Australia, means there is an ongoing risk of malaria for many Australian residents. This paper describes the epidemiology of malaria in the Torres Strait region between 2000 and 2025 and reports the public health response to three malaria outbreaks between 2023 and 2025.
METHODS: Case data from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2025 were extracted from the Queensland Notifiable Cond

Feline megaesophagus is a rare disorder characterized by esophageal hypomotility and dilation, resulting in regurgitation, weight loss, and occasionally death. This report describes the clinical and paraclinical findings of generalized megaesophagus with a possible contribution of toxocariasis in a kitten. A 2-month-old female cat was referred with chief complaints of lethargy, hyporexia, dyspnea, and vomiting/regurgitation. Physical examination of the kitten revealed bradycardia, bradypnea, hypothermia, dehydration, and lung crackles. The most notable laboratory results were leukopenia with s

BACKGROUND: Malaria poses a significant threat to public health in tropical regions, with nearly half of the global population at risk. Historically, transmission was common in temperate regions including northwestern Europe, with records indicating that malaria was prevalent in Scotland until the early nineteenth century. While current environmental and epidemiological conditions are unsuitable for transmission, future climate, environmental, and land-use change may alter the receptivity of Scotland to malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. As a first step to assess the potential for futu

BACKGROUND: The introduction of host-associated symbionts by invasive species threatens native aquatic biodiversity through symbiont spillover and host switching. This study investigated the experimental host-specificity and transmission potential of Diceratocephala boschmai from invasive Cherax quadricarinatus to the native giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii.
METHODS: Briefly, temnocephalid-infested C. quadricarinatus were exposed to symbiont-free M. rosenbergii and C. quadricarinatus for 30 days. Thereafter, symbiont transmission was assessed, and host hemolymph parameters, in

INTRODUCTION: Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in tropical regions. The disease is driven by multiple Anopheles vector species with varied ecological and behavioral traits. In transitional zones like the forested Pouth-Kelle community, detailed knowledge of vector dynamics and disease transmission remains limited. This study aimed to characterize local Anopheles species composition, biting behavior, and malaria transmission indicators to guide control strategies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2021 to January 2022, adult mosquitoes were monthly collected indoors and

The Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, antiaggregation pheromone, 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (MCH), has been used operationally in western North America to protect high-risk, high-valued trees during outbreaks since the spring of 2000. The most commonly used formulation of MCH is a bubble capsule manufactured by several different companies. Bubble capsules are made of 2 layers of plastic film that breakdown very slowly under natural conditions requiring resource managers to remove them after treatment in some situations. In this study, a small bead formulation of MCH (Herc

Routine agrochemical regimes are pervasive in tropical perennial crops, yet their ecological consequences remain poorly understood. We examined how nonselective insecticide exposure, arising from routine crop protection, shapes species composition, phenology, and population regulation of 2 co-occurring thrips, Megalurothrips typicus Bagnall and Thrips levatus Bhatti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.). We compared a sprayed commercial farm with an unsprayed research farm, combining weekly inflorescence sampling with soil emergence trapping, to track flower-infestin

Sorghum aphid (Melanaphis sorghi Theobald) is a major constraint to sorghum production, making the identification of resistant germplasm essential for sustainable management. Understanding plant resistance mechanisms is crucial for developing effective pest management strategies. This study assessed resistance mechanisms in a panel of sorghum genotypes representing broad geographic origins and possible genetic diversity using antixenosis, antibiosis, and tolerance assays. Antixenosis assays demonstrated that the genotypes ICRISAT 29, ICRISAT 218, Lunuo 45A, and Tx2783 possessed strong antixen

Disadvantaged communities characterised by poor sanitation conditions, overcrowding, and limited vector control are highly susceptible to Aedes aegypti proliferation and arboviral disease transmission. Effective mosquito vector control requires a detailed understanding of Ae. aegypti oviposition preferences and spatial distribution within such urban environments. This study aimed to identify key environmental and behavioural drivers of Ae. aegypti proliferation in disadvantaged communities of Salvador, Brazil, combining household surveys, entomological assessments, and remote sensing to guide

Molecular surveillance of malaria vectors remains critically underutilized in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to limited human capacity and technical resources, despite the region bearing the highest global burden of malaria. In a North-South collaborative effort, Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) built capacity and improved on existing computational capabilities in line with molecular surveillance of Anopheles gambiae, the primary malaria vector in sub-Saharan Africa. We interrogated an amplicon panel capable of simultaneously detecting 55

Malaria remains a significant global health challenge with an estimated 282 million cases reported in 2024. CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-drive systems have emerged as promising tools to block Plasmodium transmission by mosquito vectors. The TP13 drive system targets the Anopheles gambiae cardinal (Agcd) gene and carries 2 engineered monoclonal antibodies to achieve rapid population modification to prevent parasite transmission. Previous cage trials demonstrated complete drive introduction in 3 to 6 generations and supported modeling predicting a potential >90% reduction in malaria incidence under op

BACKGROUND: Aedes koreicus (Edwards, 1917) is native to Korea, northern China, and the Russian Far East, and has gained attention following its first detection in Europe in 2008 and subsequent spread across Europe. The Korean Peninsula, which includes the type locality of Ae. koreicus, has been regarded as a potential source region for invasive populations of this species, along with other parts of its native range. However, little is known about the genetic and morphological attributes of Korean populations.
METHODS: We obtained DNA from 172 specimens of Ae. koreicus from 19 populations in S

Myiasis refers to the infestation of humans or other vertebrates by dipteran larvae that feed on living or necrotic tissue. It occurs worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Furuncular myiasis presents as a painful, erythematous, furuncle-like nodule with a central breathing pore, often accompanied by serous discharge and a sensation of movement. In Central and South America, it is caused by Dermatobia hominis, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, Cordylobia anthropophaga is the predominant causative species. While D. hominis transfers its eggs to humans via blood-feeding arthro

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by the penetration of female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans) into the epidermis. It is endemic in Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa and occurs in Europe predominantly as a travel-associated dermatosis. Characteristic lesions are whitish-yellow papules or nodules with a central dark punctum, predominantly affecting the feet and often accompanied by erythema, pruritus, and pain. Severe infestations may lead to ulceration, nail dystrophy, and secondary bacterial infections. In low-income endemic communities, particularly among chil

Microsporidia MB, a recently discovered endosymbiont Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes, shows great potential as a malaria-blocking tool due to its Plasmodium-blocking phenotype. The symbiont utilizes vertical (mother-to-offspring) and horizontal (sexual) transmission routes to propagate across anopheline populations. Microsporidia MB occurs throughout the Anopheles life cycle, with no evidence to date of the existence of a secondary host. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive molecular screening of Microsporidia MB in aquatic macrofauna associated with Anopheles larval habitats to determi

As many pollinator populations around the world decline due to habitat loss, improving management practices for native pollinators becomes a priority. Pollinators are essential to healthy ecosystems and play irreplaceable roles in the global food system. Pollinator hotels can provide a safe, protected space suited for many different species, and can also be used as educational tools. However, these structures also often contain parasites attracted to the nests within, which can multiply without maintenance. Pollinator hotels are usually filled with nesting cavities in a variety of materials in

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a severe parasitic disease transmitted by sand fly bites. Phlebotomus sergenti is a principal vector of Leishmania tropica, causing anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) across the Mediterranean, North Africa, South Asia, and West Asia. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in northwestern China, is a well-recognized endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), with sporadic cutaneous leishmaniasis cases also documented in the region. Nevertheless, Ph. sergenti has never been reported in China prior to this study.

The resurgence of tick-borne diseases remains a global concern, hindering livestock production across southern Africa and resulting in significant economic losses and threatening the livelihoods of small-scale farmers through reduced yields, higher treatment costs, and increased livestock mortality. This review synthesizes evidence on the genetic characterization, distribution, and epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne pathogens affecting domestic ruminants (cattle, goats, and sheep) in southern Africa. A search for peer-reviewed articles published between 2016 and 2025 was conducted across thr

Progress on malaria elimination has stalled, especially in Africa where approximately 600,000 deaths occurred in 2024. Gene drive-modified mosquito (GDMM) technologies are a potentially transformational new tool to prevent malaria transmission by Anopheles mosquitoes. Gene drive-modified mosquito technologies have been successful in contained (caged) testing, and field testing is being planned. Gene drive-modified mosquitoes are designed to be more specific vector control tools than chemical insecticides. However, the potential for spread and persistence of engineered gene drive constructs wit
