Exploring cellular changes in ruptured human quadriceps tendons at single-cell resolution.

Tendon ruptures in humans have often been studied during the chronic phase of injury, particularly in the context of rotator cuff disease. However, the early response to acute tendon ruptures remains less investigated. Quadriceps tendons, which require prompt surgical treatment, offer a model to investigate this early response. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the early cellular changes in ruptured compared to healthy human quadriceps tendons. Quadriceps tendon samples were collected from patients undergoing fracture repair (healthy) or tendon repair surgery (collected 7-8 days post-inju

Analysis of Quadriceps Fatigue Effects on Lower Extremity Injury Risks During Landing Phases in Badminton Scissor Jump.

The scissor jump (SKJ) is vital in badminton, particularly for backcourt shots, but fatigue increases lower limb load and injury risk. This study investigates how quadriceps fatigue affects biomechanical characteristics and load during SKJ landing, aiming to understand its impact on injury risk. This study involved 27 amateur male badminton players from Ningbo University. Quadriceps fatigue was induced via knee exercises and footwork drills. Biomechanical data before (prior fatigue-PRF) and after fatigue (post fatigue-POF) were recorded using a force platform and motion capture system. Muscle

Dynamic simulation of knee joint mechanics: individualized multi-moment finite element modelling of patellar tendon stress during landing.

Patellar tendinopathy is prevalent in sports requiring high jumping demands, and understanding the in vivo biomechanical behavior of the patellar tendon (PT) during landing is crucial for developing effective injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies. This study investigates the in vivo biomechanical behavior of the PT during the landing phase of a stop-jump task, integrating musculoskeletal modelling, finite element analysis (FEA), and a high-speed dual fluoroscopic imaging system (DFIS). A subject-specific knee joint model was constructed from CT, MRI, and dynamic X-ray data for a 27-y

Acute effects of static stretching on the knee joint position sense of soccer players: A crossover randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Static stretching (SS) is recommended to increase short-term flexibility and to reduce the risk of muscle/tendon injuries. However, impairments on muscle performance are also reported. Regarding its effect on the knee joint-position sense (JPS), conclusions remain inconclusive. AIM: To investigate the acute effects of two different durations of SS on the knee JPS of soccer players. METHODS: This 3-period block-randomized controlled crossover trial included 17 male soccer players, aged 18-30 years, with normal knee range of motion and without history of lower limb injuries in the

The role of chitosan in tissue healing after primary repair of quadriceps tendon ruptures: Experimental animal model.

AIM: To expedite the healing of tendons by introducing chitosan to the repaired tendon site. METHODS: Thirty-six adult, male Wistar Albino rats (300-450 g) were randomly divided into three groups. A full-thickness quadriceps injury model was created in the right hind leg of all animals. The first group did not undergo any intervention (control group). In the second group, primary repair was performed following injury (primary suturing (PS) group). In the third group, primary repair was performed, and 50 mg chitosan was administered via injection at the repair site (PS+Chitosan group). Tail ve

Quadriceps muscle strength of adolescents recovers faster than those of adults after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using hamstring graft.

OBJECTIVES: Knee muscle strength recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is usually evaluated using isokinetic limb symmetry index to help take the decision to allow return to the previous sport. However, the role of age on knee strength recovery is not well known. So, we aimed to compare the isokinetic knee muscle strength recovery according to age at 4 and 7 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using hamstring graft. METHODS: From a historical cohort (2018-2023) of patients who completed isokinetic monitoring at 4 and 7 months after anterior cruciate ligam

Isokinetic Knee Strength and Patient-Reported Outcomes Differ Between Graft Types in Adolescents After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Graft selection can influence strength and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in adults undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Yet, there is a lack of high-quality evidence comparing these results in adolescents. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine differences in quadriceps and hamstring strength and PROs between adolescents with bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB), quadriceps tendon (QT), and hamstring tendon (HT) autografts. It was hypothesized that patients with QT and BPTB grafts would have greater impairments in knee extension, pati

Donor-Site Morbidity in Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction With All-Soft Tissue Quadriceps Tendon Autograft vs. Hamstring Tendon Autograft: A Retrospective Monocentric Observational Study.

Background: Graft choice, together with operative technique, remains the most controversial topic surrounding ACL reconstruction. The ideal graft choice should recreate normal anatomy and biomechanics, allow for rapid return to play and have minimal harvest-site morbidity. The purposes of this study were to compare donor-site morbidity in all-soft-tissue quadriceps autograft vs. hamstring autografts based on Hacken et al.'s ACL Donor-Site Morbidity Questionnaire (32,587,874) and to assess the role played by external factors such as sex, mood, activity level and smoking status. Chronic Rectus Femoris Tendon Reconstruction with Combined Achilles and Peroneus Longus Tendon Allografts: A Case Report.

CASE: A 23-year-old man presented to the orthopaedic clinic with chronic thigh pain 5 years after a sprinting injury with weakness and deformity. He was found to have a distal rectus femoris tendon rupture with 20 cm of retraction. An onlay reconstruction was performed using peroneus longus and achilles allografts, and the patient regained full strength and range of motion 1 year postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Chronic ruptures of the rectus femoris tendon are poorly described in the literature. Retraction may require use of allograft tissue to improve extensor mechanism function. Although outco

The addition of lateral extra-articular augmentation procedures to bone-tendon-bone or quadriceps autograft anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction does not negatively affect physical or psychological readiness for return to sport at 6 and 9 months.

PURPOSE: The addition of lateral extra-articular augmentation procedures (LEAP) to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) reduces graft failure rates in hamstring ACLR. However, their effects on return-to-sport (RTS) testing are not well understood in the setting of quadriceps (Quad) or bone-tendon-bone (BTB) autograft ACLR. The purpose was to evaluate the effects of adding LEAP to Quad or BTB autograft ACLR in young athletes, with respect to formal RTS testing outcomes. We hypothesized that the addition of LEAP to Quad or BTB ACLR would result in non-inferior outcomes as compared to

Vastus medialis onset activation in patients who underwent medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction with and without tibial tubercular osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFLR) and tibial tubercular osteotomy (TTO) are common surgical treatments for patellar dislocation. However, the impact of isolated MPFLR and MPFLR combined with TTO (MPFLR+TTO) on vastus medialis oblique (VMO) onset activation remains unclear. This study investigated the VMO onset activation relative to the vastus lateralis (VL) among patients undergoing isolated MPFLR, MPFLR+TTO, and healthy controls during maximum voluntary isometric knee extension. METHODS: This study included 25 patients who underwent MPFLR, divided into two gr

Slight graft laxity five months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction can be a risk factor for graft injury within two years in young patients.

BACKGROUND: Young and highly active athletes are at high risk of second anterior cruciate ligament injuries. The high frequency of second injuries after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction among the young population is influenced by various factors, such as sex, age, return-to-play time, and graft selection. METHODS: Between 2014 and 2019, 108 primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions under 20 years, involving 48 knees using a hamstring tendon autograft and 60 knees using a bone-patellar tendon autograft, were performed by a single surgeon. The incidence and risk factors affect

Assessing Quadriceps Strength Deficiency After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: The Role of Normalized Peak Torque in Comparing Quadriceps Tendon and Hamstring Tendon Graft.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of normalized peak torque relative to body weight in assessing quadriceps strength deficits after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, based on the type of graft used. Our primary hypothesis was that the use of a quadriceps tendon (QT) graft results in greater quadriceps strength loss than a semitendinosus-gracilis (STG) graft. DESIGN: Cohort study with prospective data collection and retrospective analysis. SETTING: University hospital ACL reconstruction between May 2019 and July 2021. PATIENTS: A total of 130 patients who underwent ACL reconstru

Cyclists do not need to incorporate off-bike resistance training to increase strength, muscle-tendon structure, and pedaling performance: Exploring a high-intensity on-bike method.

This randomized controlled trial compared the effectiveness of high-intensity off- and on-bike resistance training (RT) in well-trained cyclists. Thirty-seven cyclists incorporated into their cycling routine a 10-week RT only differing in the exercise used: full squat (off-bike RT, n = 12) or high-intensity all-out pedaling efforts (on-bike RT, n = 12). RT variables like intensity (% maximal dynamic force, MDF), volume, sets, and rest were identical between groups. A third group of cyclists who continued their cycling routine but did not include additional RT stimuli was used as a control (n =

Dynamic valgus after ACL reconstruction: quadriceps- vs. semitendinosus tendon grafts.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic valgus is a well-known risk factor for ACL injury. To date, there are no studies on the question of whether patients after harvesting of a semitendinosus tendon for reconstruction of the ACL are more likely to have a valgus knee movement than patients after harvesting of a quadriceps tendon graft. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: Hypothesis of the present study is that patients with a semitendinosus tendon graft land a drop jump with more in valgus than patients with a quadriceps tendon graft. Quadriceps versus hamstrings autograft in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a randomized control trial.

PURPOSE: The use of quadriceps tendon (QT) autograft is on the rise owing to its specific attributes, such as predictable size, lower graft failure rate, and less donor site morbidity. The hypothesis for the current study is that ACL reconstruction using QT autograft results in better clinical outcomes than hamstrings tendon (HT). METHODS: Patients underwent a single-bundle, all-inside ACL reconstruction after being randomized into QT and HT groups. At 12 months, objective outcomes (Lachman test, anterior drawer test, pivot shift test, and side-to-side anterior translation measurement with KT

Semitendinosus vs quadriceps tendon autograft in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (SEQUAR): protocol for a prospective randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a devastating injury for most individuals, especially in athletes with the desire to go back to pivoting sports. In ACL reconstruction (ACL-R), multiple autograft options are available, each with distinct advantages and limitations. The quadriceps tendon (QT) autograft has gained increasing attention due to its favorable biomechanical properties and lower donor site morbidity, yet studies comparing only athletic populations remains limited. This study protocol describes a randomized controlled trial (RCT) aiming to compare QT autograft wi
