The relationship between infestation level and the welfare of cage-free laying hens experimentally infested with northern fowl mites.

Northern fowl mites are the most economically important and damaging ectoparasite in the U.S. egg industry. The heterogeneous nature of mite infestation poses a unique welfare challenge; some hens become severely infested and others are more resistant to infestation. This study sought to characterize the relationship between mite infestation level and laying hen welfare parameters. Purebred white laying hens (replicate 1: n = 393 hens; replicate 2: n = 600 hens) were randomly allocated to cage-free floor pens (n = 40 hens/pen; 5 pens/room) in a research facility at 17 wk. Each hen was infested

The Use of Doramectin Reduces Respiratory Mite Associated Mortality in a Population of Gouldian Finches (Chloebia gouldiae).

Respiratory acariasis caused by the mite Sternostoma tracheacolum can result in significant disease in the Gouldian finch (Chloebia gouldiae), an endangered Australian passerine. A previous study published at the authors' institution reviewed morbidity and mortality of S. tracheacolum in Gouldian finches from May 2013 to March 2021 as well as a prophylactic ivermectin treatment protocol. The mite-associated mortality rate was 39%, with no reduction in mortality observed after ivermectin treatment. In response to this finding, the institution trialed an alternative prophylactic treatment protoc

Comparative efficacy and safety of oral ivermectin, topical permethrin, and combination in the treatment of patients with classic scabies: systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral ivermectin is commonly used as a second-line treatment for classic scabies, particularly in cases of treatment failure or poor adherence to topical permethrin, the standard of care. However, the comparative efficacy and safety of oral ivermectin, alone or in combination with permethrin, remains unclear. This systematic review and network meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of these treatments to guide clinicians and policymakers. METHODS: On April 17, 2022, we conducted a comprehensive search of databases, including MEDLINE and CENTRAL, as well as secondary source

Acari-Induced Diarrhea in Young Adult Patients: Case Report From Indonesia.

BACKGROUND Intestinal acariasis is caused by the ingestion of mite-contaminated food and may lead to symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. Storage mites can survive in the human intestine and may contribute to intestinal acariasis-associated diarrhea. However, awareness of this condition as a potential cause of diarrhea remains limited. These mites, particularly Tyrophagus putrescentiae and other storage mites, are commonly found in food products such as flour and grains. CASE REPORT This report describes 3 cases of intestinal acariasis. Complete clinical data were available for the fi

Morphological and infection responses of Psoroptes ovis var. cuniculi to Metarhizium pingshaense and peppermint-based compounds.

Psoroptic mange represents a significant challenge in livestock production due to economic losses and animal welfare concerns. The present study aimed, for the first time, to evaluate the compatibility of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium pingshaense, Mentha piperita essential oil (EO) and its major constituents (menthol and menthone), as well as their acaricidal potential, individually and in combination, against adult Psoroptes ovis var. cuniculi mites collected from rabbits. Mites were also evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) 24h and 48h after the treatment. The results

Recent Advances in Vaccine Development Against Poultry Red Mite (Dermanyssus gallinae): A Literature Review on Native and Recombinant Antigens.

PURPOSE: The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778), is a significant ectoparasite affecting the poultry industry, leading to considerable economic losses and potential zoonotic risks. Vaccines provide attractive alternatives to acaricides for various reasons, including the lack of residues in food products, reducing resistance in target populations, and ease of administration. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current research on vaccine development against D. gallinae, with particular emphasis on previously reported native and recombinant antigen candida

Ivermectin as Mass Drug Administration for Scabies - The Need of the Hour.

Scabies is a highly transmissible disease caused by the mite, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis . Although any age group can be affected, it is common in children. Infestation by the mite usually leads to itching, which can be very disabling with effects on sleep, concentration, and other daily activities. In addition, secondary bacterial skin infections (e.g., impetigo) are common. Treatment options include 5% permethrin cream and oral ivermectin. In small community-based trials, mass drug administration of ivermectin has been shown to substantially decrease the prevalence of both scabies and se

Exposed yet unmapped: evidence of differential flood exposure in deprived urban areas using citizen science.

BACKGROUND: Due to their immature immune system, neonates are at high risk of infection. This vulnerability when combined with limited resources and health education in developing countries can lead to sepsis, resulting in high global neonatal mortality rates. Many of these deaths are preventable. The BabyGel pilot trial tested the feasibility of conducting the main randomised trial, with the provision of alcohol handgel to postpartum mothers for prevention of neonatal infective morbidity in the rural community. This secondary analysis sought to evaluate the methods of detecting infections in

Mechanism of activation of an ancestral TEC kinase by PIP3.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

Iatrogenic cecal perforation after abdominal drain placement on a horse.

A 16-year-old, French saddlebred horse was referred for examination because of colic signs, diagnosed with incarceration of the jejunum in a mesoduodenic rent, and subsequently treated surgically (with an end-to-end anastomosis of the jejunum and an enterotomy of the pelvic flexure). The horse initially recovered without complications; however, on the following day, it exhibited moderate signs of endotoxemia and severe serosanguineous discharge from the abdominal wound. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed substantial peritoneal effusion, necessitating the placement of an abdominal drain. The bl

Molecular Methods Enhance the Detection of Pyoderma-Related Streptococcus pyogenes and emm-Type Distribution in Children.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pyogenes-related skin infections are increasingly implicated in the development of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in lower-resource settings, where they are often associated with scabies. The true prevalence of S pyogenes-related pyoderma may be underestimated by bacterial culture. METHODS: A multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay for S pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Sarcoptes scabiei was applied to 250 pyoderma swabs from a cross-sectional study of children aged <5 years in The Gambia. Direct PCR-based emm-typing was used to supplement pr

Growth kinetics and population density of a laboratory colony of the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) established in Japan.

The poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae, is a hematophagous ectoparasite that significantly threatens the poultry industry, not only through blood-feeding but also as a vector for deadly pathogens. With the growing challenge of acaricidal resistance, the demand for alternative control measures is urgent. However, effective PRM research, particularly in acaricidal efficacy and new drug discovery, hinges on the availability of reliable laboratory colonies. In this study, we successfully established a stable PRM laboratory colony, originally isolated from the field in 2021 and maintained

Avoiding the tragedies of parasite tolerance in Darwinian beekeeping.

Bee declines have been partly attributed to the impacts of invasive or emerging parasite outbreaks. For western honeybees, Apis mellifera, major losses are associated with the virus-vectoring mite, Varroa destructor. In response, beekeepers have focused breeding efforts aimed at conferring resistance to this key parasite. One method of many is survival-based beekeeping where colonies that survive despite significant Varroa infestations produce subsequent colonies. We argue that this 'hands-off' approach will not always lead to Varroa resistance evolving but rather tolerance. Tolerance minimize
