Over-expression and increased copy numbers of a cytochrome P450 and two UDP-glucuronosyltransferase genes in macrocyclic lactone resistant Psoroptes ovis of cattle.

Psoroptes ovis is a mite species that feeds on sheep, cattle, other ungulates, rabbits, and horses, which can develop into a severe exudative dermatitis known as psoroptic mange. The macrocyclic lactone (ML) family of acaricides are commonly used to control psoroptic mange. However, certain strains of cattle and sheep mites have developed resistance against MLs, which has led to reduced treatment efficacy and even treatment failure. Here we investigated the genetic basis of ML resistance in P. ovis mites collected from cattle across Belgium. We compared gene expression between susceptible and

Scabies: An updated review from epidemiology to current controversies and future perspectives.

Scabies is a highly contagious parasitic dermatosis caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, affecting over 200 million individuals globally and imposing a significant health burden. Traditionally linked to low socioeconomic status and overcrowding, its prevalence is rising globally, especially among urban and institutional settings. Beyond its cutaneous manifestations, secondary bacterial complications contribute to significant morbidity, particularly in endemic areas. Advances in non-invasive imaging techniques including ultraviolet dermoscopy, reflectance confocal microscopy and l

Spatiotemporal, environmental, and behavioral predictors of Varroa mite intensity in managed honey bee apiaries.

Honey bees contribute substantially to the world economy through pollination services and honey production. In the U.S. alone, honey bee pollination is estimated to contribute at least $11 billion annually, primarily through the pollination of specialty crops. However, beekeepers lose about half of their hives every season due to disease, insecticides, and other environmental factors. Here, we explore and validate a spatiotemporal statistical model of Varroa destructor mite burden (in mites/300 bees) in managed honey bee colonies, exploring the impact of both environmental factors and beekeepe

Parasitic Mites of Honey Bees (Apis Spp.): A Detailed Review of Varroa destructor in Parasitism, Pathogen Transmission and its Management.

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is the primary factor contributing to global honeybee (Apis mellifera) colony losses, posing a sustainable challenge to apiculture and pollination services. Its intricate life cycle adaptive reproductive strategies, and advanced sensory mechanisms have facilitated its emergence as the most destructive honeybee parasite. V. destructor uses highly specialized feeding strategies that extract essential nutrients from their hosts and introduce various pathogens, causing honeybee health problems. The mite functions as a viral vector, particularly in the case of t

First Complete Genome Sequence of Palo Verde Broom Emaravirus, Virus-Derived siRNA Signatures, and Phytohormone-Metabolite Profiling of Witches' Broom-Affected Palo Verde Trees.

Witches' broom disease of blue palo verde (Parkinsonia florida) was reported more than sixty years ago. Characteristic symptoms consist of dense clusters of shortened, brittle branches and stunted leaves. The suspect causal agent has been identified as palo verde broom virus (PVBV), genus, Emaravirus, family, Fimoviridae. Here, the first complete PVBV genome sequence was determined, and virus small interfering RNAs (vsiRNAs), primary metabolites, and phytohormone profiles were characterized from infected palo verde leaves, adventitious shoots, flowers, and seeds. Based on pairwise distances, P

Survival mechanisms of preselected breeder honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies under Varroa-infestation: Selective breeding of natural selection.

Including other stressors, global losses of honeybee colonies are attributed to Varroa destructor. Among control measures, breeding resistant bee strains are promising and eco-friendly, though the mechanisms involved are complex. This study evaluated mite fall, mite population, colony development (brood and adult population), and viral infestations across three groups: Group A (hygienic, low grooming), Group B (non-hygienic, high grooming), and Group C (Intermediate traits) from June to October 2024. Groups B and C had lower colony mortality than Group A. Although the average number of fallen

SCA-MobiPlant: smartphone-deployed multistage attention fusion model for accurate field detection of chili leaf curl complex.

BACKGROUND: Field-scale assessment of chili leaf curl complex presents a significant diagnostic challenge, as both chili leaf curl virus (ChiLCV) and mite infestations produce visually overlapping symptoms difficult to distinguish by untrained personnel. This diagnostic confusion frequently leads to inappropriate application of either insecticides or acaricides, resulting in economic losses and environmental concerns. To address this issue, we propose SCA-MobiPlant, an improved MobileNetV3-Small model integrated with a novel multistage Squeeze-and-Excitation Coordinate Attention (SCA) fusion m

Fending for Thyself: Honey Bees From Ethiopia Inflict Physical Damage on Varroa destructor.

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor and its associated viruses threaten the health of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.). Yet, African populations survive mite infestations without miticide treatment largely due to social immunity behaviors. However, little is known about these defense mechanisms in A. m. simensis populations from the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study investigated grooming and hygienic behaviors across lowland, midland, and highland areas during the wet and dry seasons in this region. Grooming behavior was quantified by measuring adult mite infestation rates, da

Pathogenicity analysis and control strategies to combat avian diseases: mechanisms of increased virulence of Marek's disease virus and the development of vaccines against poultry red mites.

The occurrence of avian diseases has been greatly reduced by improved sanitation on poultry farms and the development of prevention programs through vaccination and other measures. However, the poultry industry still faces several concerns. Marek's disease (MD) has caused significant economic losses to the poultry industry in the past; however, the introduction of vaccines has successfully contributed to a reduction in MD occurrences. Nevertheless, sporadic MD occurrences are still observed, and increased virulence has been reported owing to the changes in viral characteristics. In addition to

Efficacy of combination therapy with oral Ivermectin and topical permethrin versus permethrin monotherapy in pediatric patients with persistent scabies: a propensity score-adjusted observational study.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a highly contagious parasitic infestation that disproportionately affects children in resource-limited settings. Topical 5% permethrin is first-line therapy, but effectiveness is limited by suboptimal application, rapid reinfestation, and emerging resistance. Adding oral ivermectin to permethrin has shown promise in small series, yet its cost-28-37% of the 2022 minimum wage in Türkiye before generics and still 5-7% after-puts it beyond reach for many families, with similar gaps in other low-income countries. We conducted a propensity-score-adjusted study comparing iverme

"It totally depends on the goodwill of the health professional": health seeking behavior and access to health services among street children infested with scabies in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a neglected stigmatizing skin disease which is common in resource-limited tropical areas. Due to their living conditions, street children are highly vulnerable to scabies infestation. Efforts to prevent and control scabies rely heavily on access to health services, hygienic conditions, and other aspects of health-seeking behavior of a population. The purpose of this research was to identify the health-seeking behavior of street children and the state of interventions to respond to their health service needs in selected areas of Ethiopia. METHODS: The study employed an e

Expression profiles of itch markers during scabies infection in a porcine scabies model.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a debilitating parasitic skin disease caused by the obligate parasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which inhabits the upper layers of the epidermis. In over 90% of affected individuals intense itching is the primary clinical symptom. This is accompanied by other delayed-type hypersensitivity responses. Persistent scratching due to the itch compromises skin integrity, facilitating the entry of pathogenic bacteria. Combined with immune-modulatory factors secreted by the mites, this creates a permissive environment for bacterial colonisation often leading to secondary complicat
