Artificial intelligence-assisted prediction of Demodex mite density in facial erythema.

Current detection methods of Demodex mite density in facial erythema are semi-invasive or operator-dependent. We developed and evaluated a deep learning model (DemodexNet) for predicting Demodex mite density and assessed its impact on the diagnostic performance of dermatologists. This study included 1,124 patients with facial erythema who underwent Demodex mite density measurement at two referral hospitals between January 2016 and August 2023. DemodexNet achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.823-0.865 in internal testing, with lower values observed in the

Detection and molecular characterization of Ursicoptes americanus in Georgia, USA black bears (Ursus americanus): Clinical presentations, prevalence, and phylogenetic analysis.

Ursicoptes americanus is a follicular mite that can cause ursicoptic mange in bear species; however, its biology, epidemiology, and clinical significance remain poorly understood. First described in the 1970s from a captive American black bear (Ursus americanus) in Kansas, USA, this mite has since been reported sporadically in both captive and free-ranging black bears, predominately in the western United States. This study aimed to detect and characterize U. americanus in Georgia black bears, assess clinical presentations, estimate prevalence across distinct subpopulations, and analyze phyloge

Disease dynamics and severity control of an established environmentally transmitted parasite.

For many wildlife impacted by invasive pathogens, demand for management that curbs impacts can exist long after emergence, yet there are few examples where management is demonstrated as both efficacious and sustainable. We investigated disease dynamics in a bare-nosed wombat (Vombatus ursinus) population where there is demand for disease management and undertook an intervention to test the capacity to curb the severity of sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei) using relatively simple therapeutic delivery methods. Using transect surveys, we observed large numbers of bare-nosed wombats (a

First report of Chorioptes texanus (Acari: Psoroptidae) in Argentina.

In Argentina it has historically been assumed that Chorioptes bovis is the only species involved in clinical cases of bovine chorioptic mange. The aim of this communication is to present the first formal report based on morphometric studies of C. texanus in Argentina. Mange mites were collected through skin scrapings of areas with superficial dermatitis on adult dairy cows from three dairy farms located in Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Córdoba provinces (Argentina). Clinical lesions were characterized by dermatitis located at the base of the tail and ischiorectal fossa, pruritus with hyperkeratosis

Crusted scabies associated with erythroderma: a case report in an HIV negative patient.

Crusted scabies is a rare and severe variant of scabies, typically associated with immunosuppressed states. It presents with extensive hyperkeratotic lesions, high mite burden, and often minimal pruritus. Atypical signs and symptoms can delay diagnosis. We report a case of crusted scabies with erythroderma in an 80-year-old woman residing in a long-term care facility. The patient presented with progressive erythematous and hyperkeratotic skin lesions, mild pruritus, and systemic inflammation markers. Initial differential diagnoses included psoriasis and erythroderma of unclear origin. Only aft

Osmotin1 is involved in rice resistance to Schizotetranychus oryzae (Acari: Tetranychidae) infestation.

BACKGROUND: Rice is one of the most consumed cereals in the world. Productivity losses are caused by different biotic stresses. One of the most common is the phytophagous mite Schizotetranychus oryzae Rossi de Simons (Acari: Tetranychidae), which inhibits plant development and seed production. The identification of plant defense proteins is important for a better understanding of the mite-plant interaction. We previously detected a high expression of Osmotin1 protein in mite-resistant rice cultivars, under infested conditions, suggesting it could be involved in plant defense against mite attac

Disentangling detrimental sand fly-mite interactions in a closed laboratory sand fly colony: implications for vector-borne disease studies and guidelines for overcoming severe mite infestations.

BACKGROUND: Vector sand fly colonies are a critical component of studies aimed at improving the understanding of the neglected tropical disease leishmaniasis and alleviating its global impact. However, among laboratory-colonized arthropod vectors of infectious diseases, the labor-intensive nature of sand fly rearing coupled with the low number of colonies worldwide has generally discouraged the widespread use of sand flies in laboratory settings. Among the different factors associated with the low productivity of sand fly colonies, mite infestations are a significant factor. Sand fly colonies

Susceptible and infectious states for both vector and host in a dynamic pathogen-vector-host system.

Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a resurgent insect pathogen of honeybees that is efficiently transmitted by vectors and through host social contact. Continual transmission of DWV between hosts and vectors is required to maintain the pathogen within the population, and this vector-host-pathogen system offers unique disease transmission dynamics for pathogen maintenance between vectors and a social host. In a series of experiments, we measured vector-vector, host-host and host-vector transmission routes and show how these maintain DWV in honeybee populations. We found co-infestations on shared host

The Varroa paradox: infestation levels and hygienic behavior in feral scutellata-hybrid and managed Apis mellifera ligustica honey bees.

The Varroa destructor mite is a parasitic threat to managed and feral honey bee colonies around the world. Beekeepers use miticides to eliminate Varroa in commercial hives, but these chemicals can diminish bee health and increase miticide resistance. In contrast, feral honey bees have developed multiple ways to counteract mites without chemical treatment. We compared mite levels, grooming habits, and mite-biting behavior between feral Africanized honey bees (genomically verified Apis mellifera scutellata hybrids) and managed Italian honey bees (A. mellifera ligustica). Surprisingly, there was

Prevalence and distribution of Varroa destructor and Nosema spp. in symptomatic honey bee colonies across the USA from 2015 to 2022.

USDA-ARS Bee Research Laboratory received symptomatic honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) samples across the United States for disease diagnosis. Here, we present a retrospective study and cartography of ectoparasite Varroa destructor and intracellular microsporidia parasite Nosema spp. These two major parasites were identified in the diseased honey bee samples between 2015 and 2022. Varroa infestation level (VIL) was examined by a wash technique (Mites/100 bees) and calculated as a percentage, while Nosema infection was quantified by microscopical spore count (Million Spores/Bee). Data were analyze

SARCOPTIC MANGE IN FREE-RANGING NORTH AMERICAN PORCUPINES (ERETHIZON DORSATUM) IN NEW YORK STATE.

Sarcoptic mange causes pruritic and crusting dermatitis in a large number of mammalian species with varying population impacts. Between 2016 and 2022, 15 North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) were diagnosed with sarcoptic mange at Cornell University's Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital in Ithaca, New York. Disease severity varied among individuals but all shared a similar unique presentation with thick, pale tan to yellow crusts limited in distribution to the ventral, nonquilled areas of the body, including the ventral abdomen and thorax, distal limbs, and face. The thick, hard nature

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles emitted by citrus in response to spider mite infestation can attract predatory mites.

Understanding the nutritional interplay among plants, pests, and natural enemies is essential for sustainable pest management. Enhancing the efficiency of natural enemies, such as Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is critical, and exploiting herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) offers a promising approach. However, N. californicus has rarely been reported to utilize HIPVs to improve their biological control capabilities. Our research revealed a significant difference in the diversity of volatile compounds detected in clean Citrus reticulata Blanco leaves compared to

Effective treatment of sarcoptic mange in an alpaca (Vicugna pacos) using fluralaner: a case report.

South American Camelids, including alpacas, have gained popularity in Europe as pets and prized wool sources. Skin health concerns, particularly mite infestations, have emerged as a notable problem in these animals. Sarcoptic mange can lead to severe itching, papules, and chronic symptoms such as alopecia, crusts, and emaciation if left untreated. This case report documents a 2-year-old female alpaca suffering from sarcoptic mange. Despite initial treatment with ivermectin, its condition worsened, leading to severe weight loss, abortion, and a continued presence of mites. Considering the lack

Treat Yourself: Pilot Testing a New Method to Treat Mange in Wild Carnivores.

Mange is a skin disease caused by mites that parasitize an animal's skin, often yielding inflamed immune responses and hair loss. At a population level, mange may reduce survival and cause population declines. Many forms of mange can be treated quite effectively when an animal is in hand; however, this is not often feasible for many free-ranging wildlife populations. Some animals, particularly territorial carnivores, will rub or roll to scent mark and transmit information about their presence to other individuals. We posited that rub stations comprised, in part, of anthelmintic medication and

Properties of essential oils absorbed on the surface of cardboard pieces after using atmospheric-pressure plasma treatments to develop long-lasting Varroa miticides in honeybees (Apis mellifera).

The ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor is the most serious widespread pest of managed honeybees (Apis mellifera). Several acaricide products, which include essential oils, have been proposed for mite control. In this study, we aimed to apply atmospheric-pressure plasma to modify a cardboard piece surface in order to prolong the delivery of essential oils for controlling Varroa in honeybee colonies. Absorption capacity, release rates and evaporation rates of essential oils were determined. Cardboard piece showed a higher absorption capacity of cinnamon compared to citronella and clove. Surfa

Geographical distribution of pyrethroid resistance mutations in Varroa destructor across Türkiye and a European overview.

Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman (Acari: Varroidae) is of paramount significance in modern beekeeping, with infestations presenting a primary challenge that directly influences colony health, productivity, and overall apicultural sustainability. In order to control this mite, many beekeepers rely on a limited number of approved synthetic acaricides, including the pyrethroids tau-fluvalinate, flumethrin and organophosphate coumaphos. However, the excessive use of these substances has led to the widespread development of resistance in various beekeeping areas globally. In the present study,
