OBJECTIVE: To investigate the method of using vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) technique to repair the wound of the injured in Wenchuan earthquake and its therapeutic effect.
METHODS: From May 12, 2008 to June 12, 2008, 52 injured persons (83 wounds) were treated, including 27 males and 25 females aged 11-83 years old (average 42 years old). OBJECTIVE: Early compartment syndrome is difficult to diagnose, and a delay in the diagnosis can result in amputation or death. Our objective was to explore the potential of infrared imaging, a portable and noninvasive technology, for detecting compartment syndrome in the legs of patients with multiple trauma. We hypothesized that development of compartment syndrome is associated with a reduction in surface temperature in the involved leg and that the temperature reduction can be detected by infrared imaging.

Acute compartment syndrome of the thigh is a rare but potentially devastating condition, in which the pressure within the osseofascial compartment rises above the capillary perfusion gradient, leading to cellular anoxia, muscle ischaemia and death. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent long term disability. It is most often associated with crush injuries and femoral fracture. We present a previously unreported case of thigh compartment syndrome following a stab injury, treated by emergent fasciotomy.

Management of bone loss that occurs after severe trauma of open lower extremity fractures continues to challenge reconstructive surgeons. An avulsed elbow with severe degloving and crush injury was reconstructed in a 66-year-old man. The biceps brachii was completely transected, and the triceps brachii tendon was partly transected. In addition, the skin around the elbow had become totally necrotic. Four weeks after the injury, a free anterolateral thigh flap with a fascial flap was transplanted to reconstruct both the biceps brachii and triceps brachii tendons simultaneously. Six months after the initial injury, the range of elbow motion had recovered to almost the same level as that before injury.

An experimental model was developed combining arterial trauma with island flap creation using the rat groin flap system. Flap arteries were subjected to crush/avulsion injuries with subsequent microvascular repair. A second series involved resection 4 hr after thrombosis of injured flap arteries and interpositional vein grafting to reestablish circulation.
