[Tungiasis: from travel-associated dermatosis to a neglected tropical disease].

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by the penetration of female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans) into the epidermis. It is endemic in Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa and occurs in Europe predominantly as a travel-associated dermatosis. Characteristic lesions are whitish-yellow papules or nodules with a central dark punctum, predominantly affecting the feet and often accompanied by erythema, pruritus, and pain. Severe infestations may lead to ulceration, nail dystrophy, and secondary bacterial infections. In low-income endemic communities, particularly among chil

Training resources for skin neglected tropical diseases: coverage, quality and gaps - a scoping review.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect over one billion people worldwide. More than half of these NTDs primarily affect the skin and are known as 'skin NTDs'. Several recent initiatives have aimed to teach frontline healthcare workers to identify and manage these conditions. However, the content and quality of existing training materials have not been analysed, leaving gaps unclear. This scoping review evaluates skin NTD training materials to identify priorities for resource development. Training materials for frontline healthcare workers available via the InfoNTD, OpenWHO and Centers for D

Dysregulation of miR-103a-3p in KGN cells and its targeting of KGN: potential role in polycystic ovary syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Rwanda, like many African countries, endeavours to overcome the food insecurity challenge with different initiatives. One such initiative is the 'one-cow-per-poor-family' programme known as the 'Girinka Programme'. With the introduction of every cow into the household, there is a resultant change in household bio-economics. Subsequently, some decisions must be made regarding either the consumption or the selling of milk, calves or manure. This study investigates the effect of household decision dynamics within the framework of this programme on food insecurity in Rwanda. The micro-

A Randomised, Parallel-Group Study to Compare the Efficacy of 3% Phenothrin-Containing Jigger Lotion Versus Potassium Permanganate for Treatment of Tungiasis in Vihiga County, Kenya.

Tungiasis, caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, results in itching and pain. Effective treatments, such as dimeticones, are often unaffordable. A 3% phenothrin lotion has shown safety and efficacy in Kenyan trials. This study compared the cure rate and safety of 3% phenothrin lotion (as the intervention) and 0.05% potassium permanganate (KMnO4; as the standard-care comparator) over 14 days. This parallel-group, three-arm, non-blinded, randomised comparative trial was conducted in Vihiga County, Kenya. Participants aged ≥2 years with ≥1 viable flea on each foot were allocated (2:1:1) to KMn

Individual and household factors associated with tungiasis in a marginalized population in Karamoja, northeastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by adult female fleas which burrow into the skin of people and animals, causing considerable pain and itching. The distribution of the disease is heterogeneous, with Napak district, Karamoja sub-region of northeastern Uganda having the highest disease burden recorded globally. We aimed to determine the factors associated with this high prevalence to inform future intervention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study to identify factors associated with infection of individual children and adults, and a nested ca

Magnitude and Associated Factors of Podoconiosis and its Comorbidity With Tungiasis Among Residents in Southwest Ethiopia: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Nonfilarial elephantiasis, also known as podoconiosis, is a completely preventable, neglected tropical disease characterized by prominent swelling of the lower extremities. The disease is common in sub-Saharan Africa. However, its epidemiology varies from region to region. Its comorbidity with other diseases is also rarely studied in Ethiopia. A better understanding of podoconiosis and its comorbidity with tungiasis is crucial for the utmost consideration of the management and prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of podoc

Imported Tungiasis in Greece: Secondary Household Transmission and Transient Mixed Liver Enzyme Elevation.

Tungiasis is a cutaneous ectoparasitosis caused by the penetration of gravid female Tunga penetrans fleas into the epidermis. Although endemic in tropical and subtropical regions, it remains rare in Europe, where most cases are travel-associated and secondary household transmission is seldom documented. This study describes imported tungiasis in Greece and investigates possible secondary household transmission in a non-endemic setting. Seven Greek men residing in Attica developed tungiasis following occupational exposure in Tanzania, together with one secondary case in a non-travelling househo

Visual cues attract adult Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera: Tungidae).

Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) is an ectoparasitic flea whose adult females cause tungiasis by embedding into the host's skin. Environmental, social and financial challenges in tungiasis endemic areas have left this disease neglected and lacking locally available control measures. One possible approach for controlling T. penetrans targets its off-host stages; however, surveillance tools for adult fleas are still lacking. Moreover, host-seeking cues and behaviour of adult T. penetrans remain largely unknown. In this study, we show that visual cues are attractive to ad

Scabies and other ectoparasitoses.

Ectoparasitoses are caused by organisms that parasitize their host's skin. They affect a considerable proportion of the global population, with a disproportionately greater burden in disadvantaged individuals and communities, although any human is susceptible. They are more prevalent in tropical climates. They can have a major impact on infected individuals' quality of life and on affected populations, and they can result in severe complications. Despite their contribution to the global burden of disease, ectoparasitoses remain largely neglected. Making their characteristics visible and unders

Beyond poverty, tungiasis is associated with family characteristics and parenting behavior: a case control study in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans. Female fleas burrow into the skin, typically of the feet, producing inflammation, pain, and itching. Although poverty is a major risk factor, not all households or children in the lowest economic bracket are affected, and boys appear disproportionately infected. This study investigated environmental and behavioral characteristics of households and children to explain these variations. METHODS: A total of 3,871 pupils (equal numbers of boys and girls) aged 8-14 years from 44 primary schools in K

Prevalence, spatial and temporal distribution of tungiasis in the Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS) in Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis is a highly neglected tropical disease of the skin caused by an embedded female sand flea affecting the most resource-poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and South America. The global disease burden is unknown and systematic, fine-resolution spatial data on prevalence and environmental and ecological risk factors are rare. METHODS: We leveraged the Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System of 90 257 households and asked whether they had a case of tungiasis in the household at interview during three survey rounds of routine surveys, undertaken

Effectiveness of dimeticone oils versus sodium carbonate solution in the treatment of tungiasis in Kenya: a non-inferiority randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a cutaneous parasitic disease caused by the female flea Tunga penetrans. The World Health Organization recommends two-component dimeticone (NYDA®) as the sole treatment for tungiasis; however, this topical medication is not available in Kenya. In western Kenya, sodium carbonate has been adopted as a traditional village-based treatment. A pilot study found that the proportion of dead fleas on day 7 was higher with NYDA® treatment than that with 5% sodium carbonate treatment (87% vs. 64%, respectively). This study was aimed at assessing the 11-day cure rates of tungiasis

Operationalising One Health for epidermal parasitic skin diseases: threshold-triggered mass drug administration and a minimal indicator set.

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSDs)-including scabies, pediculosis, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis and cutaneous larva migrans-affect millions worldwide yet remain neglected within global health programmes. Control is hindered by delayed diagnosis, fragmented service delivery, weak surveillance and limited integration of human, animal and environmental interventions. This review operationalises a One Health approach for EPSDs by proposing a pragmatic, threshold-triggered control pathway supported by a minimal indicator set suitable for district-level implementation. Could tungiasis jump to Asia? Modelling habitat suitability and establishment risk for the tungiasis flea (Tunga penetrans) in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the jigger flea (Tunga penetrans) which typically invades the sole of the foot causing serious morbidity and sometimes mortality through secondary infections such as tetanus. Although tungiasis is found throughout tropical regions of the Americas and Africa, it has not yet become established in tropical Asia. Due to the large human population and extensive poverty in tropical Asia, an introduction of T. penetrans would pose a serious public health threat. Therefore, to estimate the extent of suitable habitat in tropical Asia and to iden

Estimation of the global burden of tungiasis in endemic countries using a disability adjusted life-years modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical zoonotic skin disease which is endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, caused by sand fleas of the genus Tunga, which burrow into the skin of affected humans and animals, most commonly when the feet come in contact with infested soil. Sand flea infection leads to inflammation, severe itching, and pain, with the potential for secondary bacterial or viral infections, gangrene, and disfigurement. Tungiasis disproportionately affects poor rural communities, and individuals living in unhygienic settlements. To date, the existing burden of tungi

Understanding histotripsy ablation safety: a systematic review of pre-clinical and clinical adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Facet joint tropism is asymmetry in orientation of the bilateral facets. Some studies have shown that tropism may increase the risk of disc degeneration and herniations, as well as degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). It remains controversial whether tropism is a pre-existing developmental phenomena or secondary to progressive remodeling of the joint structure due to degenerative changes. As such, the following study addressed the occurrence of tropism of the lower lumbar spine (i.e. L3-S1) in a degenerative spondylolisthesis patient model. METHODS: An international, multi-center
