Tungiasis is caused by infestation with the sand flea (Tunga penetrans). This ectoparasitosis is endemic in economically depressed communities in South American and African countries. Tungiasis is usually considered an entomologic nuisance and does not receive much attention from healthcare professionals. During a study on tungiasis-related disease in an economically depressed area in Fortaleza, northeast Brazil, we identified 16 persons infested with an extremely high number of parasites. These patients had >50 lesions each and showed signs of intense acute and chronic inflammation. Superinfe

Tungiasis is caused by penetration of the female jigger flea, Tunga penetrans, into the skin of its host. This parasitic skin disease is almost invariably associated with intense inflammation around embedded fleas, the underlying mechanisms being unknown. A study was undertaken to determine whether the inflammatory process can be attributed to immune activation induced by a biologically active foreign body. We determined the concentrations of Th1-mediated (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha) and Th2-mediated (IL-4) cytokines in the sera of patients with tungiasis. The results were compared with those of con

Tungiasis is caused by the penetration of the female sand flea Tunga penetrans into the epidermis of its host. Human infestation with this ectoparasite is hyper-endemic in many resource-poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and South America and is associated with considerable morbidity. Currently, there is no effective drug available to treat tungiasis (or at least none for which a parasiticidal effect has been clearly demonstrated). In an attempt to fill this gap, the effects of treatment with topical ivermectin (lotion), thiabendazole (ointment and lotion), metrifonate (loti

Parasitic skin diseases such as scabies, pediculosis, tungiasis, and cutaneous larva migrans are hyperendemic in the numerous poor communities in Brazil and are commonly associated with considerable morbidity. However, programs to control ectoparasites are non-existent in the country's public health system. Due to neglect of these diseases by the population itself and health care professionals, the diseases' highly contagious characteristics, and lack of effective treatment and/or presence of animal reservoirs together with a complex life cycle, effective control of ectoparasites is an enormou

The authors recently described a new species of sand flea (genus Tunga) occurred in goat, sheep, cow, pig and man, in the Andean village of S.ta Isabel (Ecuador) and named Tunga trimamillata. Its most important morphological characteristics are: slightly larger dimensions than T. penetrans, both in male and female; presence on the anterior extremity of gravid female of three rounded humps surrounding head and thorax; length of the first segment of maxillary palpi which is longer than each of the other three. The importance of this parasite is due to the fact that it can cause the same damages

The treatment of tungiasis involves the mechanic extraction of the gravid females of Tunga penetrans. We have observed on 8 patients profuse tungiasis diagnosed in the centre hospitalier de Cayenne. We have carried out different types of treatment, including the occlusive application of 20% of salicylated vaseline during 12 or 24 hours. This procedure causes the death of the parasites and facilitates their extraction.

Tungiasis is a parasitic and zoonotic skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans-also called the jigger flea, which burrows into human skin, usually on the feet. The ectoparasitosis occurs in many economically depressed communities in the Caribbean, South America and Africa, and affects sporadically travellers to endemic areas. Usually, only one or two lesions are found in travellers, whereas the local populations commonly harbour dozens, sometimes even hundreds of lesions, associated with severe morbidity. We review case reports of tungiasis in returned travellers in terms of histor

Different noninvasive techniques for the assessment of the individual fracture risk in osteoporosis are introduced, and the relation between structural properties of high-resolution computed tomography (HR-CT) images of vertebral bodies, their bone mineral density (BMD) and the fracture load is analyzed. In 24 unfractured lumbar vertebrae with different degrees of demineralization from six specimens, the trabecular and cortical BMD was determined using quantitative CT. A lateral X-ray image revealed the number of fractures in the entire spine. A structural analysis of spongy and cortical bone

CONTEXT: Tunga penetrans is a flea that burrows into human skin, causing the disease tungiasis. Although the parasite is not endemic in the United States, patients may present with this disease upon returning from tropical locales. Histologic sections contain a variety of flea parts that may present a diagnostic dilemma for pathologists unfamiliar with this disease.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the typical histologic features of T penetrans in biopsies from patients with tungiasis.
METHODS: We reviewed biopsy specimens from 7 patients with tungiasis and sought 8 distinct structures: the exoskelet

Tungiasis has been reported to occur in many Latin American, Caribbean and African countries. However, epidemiological data are still very scanty and do not exist at all for Brazil. To fill this gap, a cross-sectional study has been undertaken in a shantytown (favela) in Fortaleza, Ceará State, northeast Brazil. All 327 households of a circumscribed sub-area were visited, and 1185 out of the 1460 household members were thoroughly examined for the presence of tungiasis. Thirty-four% (95% CI: 30.9-36.4) were found to be infected with Tunga penetrans with a significant preponderance of the male s

Tungiasis is caused by the penetration of the female sand flea Tunga penetrans into the epidermis. It is generally assumed that lesions are confined to the feet. To determine to what degree tungiasis occurs at other topographic sites, 1,184 inhabitants of a poor neighborhood in northeastern Brazil were examined; 33.6% were found to have tungiasis (95% confidence interval = 30.9-36.4%). Six percent presented lesions at locations other than the feet, with the hands being the most common ectopic site (5.5%). Other sites were the elbows, thighs, and gluteal region. Ectopic tungiasis was significan

In search of Wolbachia in human parasites, Wolbachia were identified in the sand flea Tunga penetrans. PCR and DNA sequencing of the bacterial 16S rDNA, the ftsZ cell division protein, the Wolbachia surface protein (wsp) and the Wolbachia aspartate aminotransferase genes revealed a high similarity to the respective sequences of endosymbionts of filarial nematodes. Using these sequences a phylogenetic tree was generated, that indicates a close relationship between Wolbachia from T. penetrans and from filarial parasites, but possibly as a member of a new supergroup. Ultrastructural studies showe

A case of a 39 year old patient in whom infection by the sand flea Tunga penetrans was diagnosed by histological examination is described. Clinical findings included small red lesions on the lower extremities, containing a pyodermic component and a central black dot resembling tattoo. A tropical parasitic disease was considered as the signs developed following the patient's return from Tanzania.

Tungiasis is a cutaneous infestation caused by the gravid female sand flea, Tunga penetrans. We describe 2 cases of tungiasis that occurred in siblings who recently emigrated as international adoptees from Liberia to the United States. Both patients had infectious complications as a result of the infestation with T penetrans.

A 24-year-old man developed slow-growing lesions on subungual and plantar areas that appeared a few weeks after returning from a trip to South America. The diagnosis of tungiasis was established by microscopic examination of a lesion. Tungiasis is rarely seen in non-endemic areas.

Tungiasis is an infestation of the skin caused by the flea Tunga penetrans. It is not rare in western Europe because of tourism to tropical and subtropical countries. However, tungiasis has been very rarely reported in children. We describe a case of tungiasis in a 3-year-old child. The infestation was localized to the second toe of the left foot and was characterized by an atypical clinical presentation.
