Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. Better floors, better health: a theory of change for an improved household flooring intervention in rural communities in Kwale and Bungoma counties, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Household flooring is increasingly being investigated as a determinant of health, however the pathways through which flooring may impact health and wellbeing are not yet well understood. The SABABU study is a cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the impact of an improved flooring intervention on soil-transmitted helminthiasis, tungiasis, and enteric infections in Bungoma and Kwale counties, Kenya. This paper presents the findings from a theory of change development process that was undertaken as part of the formative research phase of the SABABU project. METHODS: A co-cr

Dynamics of Tunga penetrans infections and severity of associated morbidity among pigs during the dry season in rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease which is common in impoverished communities. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is caused by female sand fleas, Tunga penetrans, and pigs are amongst the major domestic animal reservoirs. Depending on the environment, tungiasis occurs throughout the year or preferentially in the dry seasons. This study investigated changes in sand flea abundance and associated morbidity in pigs during a dry season. METHODS: Tunga penetrans lesions were counted and staged in 35 pigs amongst 22 households with at least one affected pig. Five weekly examinations were

A Case of Tungiasis in a Greek Patient: A Tropical Souvenir.

Cutaneous parasitosis caused by fleas belonging to the Tunga genus is a common disease in certain regions of the globe like Latin America or Sub-Saharan Africa, but rare in western countries. Its clinical course varies from self-limiting disease to severe systemic infection, making it clear that early diagnosis and treatment are of great importance. We describe a case of imported tungiasis of the lower limb in a patient with a recent travel to Tanzania. The patient presented with dark lesions on the toes, pain, oedema, and pruritus. Clinical and dermoscopic evaluation raised the suspicion of p

First report of Tunga trimamillata infection in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Tunga penetrans and, less commonly, Tunga trimamillata. It affects the skin of humans and animals in rural or low-income communities. The disease is considered endemic in Ecuador, with most cases reported in the Amazon and Andean regions. There are few cases reported on T. trimamillata in Ecuador, most of which have been reported in the canton of Santa Isabel, Azuay Province. Unlike T. penetrans, no cases of canine infection have been reported for T.trimamillata before. CASE REPORT: A canine patient was presented for medical cons

Prevalence and factors associated with Tungiasis among school age children in Sub Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis is an overlooked tropical disease resulting from the penetration of the skin by sand fleas. It leads to significant suffering and can be fatal, particularly affecting school age children and elders, primarily above 60 years old, in rural and urban slums across Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its great public health consequences, the condition remains largely under reported by the scientific communities mainly in Sub Saharan African countries. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of Tungiasis and associated factors among school-age children in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS AN

Environmental and Social Factors Associated with the Occurrence of Severe Tungiasis and Scabies in the State of Ceará, Brazil: An Ecological Study.

Scabies and tungiasis are skin-related neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) associated with poverty and poor living conditions. We performed an ecological study covering a state in northeast Brazil to identify socio-economic and environmental factors associated with the occurrence of severe scabies and severe tungiasis, respectively. Data on disease occurrence on the municipality level were derived from a previous study based on online questionnaires. A total of 47 (26.0%) of the 181 state's municipalities reported severe tungiasis, and 113 (62.4%) severe scabies. Municipalities with occurrence

Reduction of tungiasis prevalence, intensity, and morbidity during a two-year long community-based tungiasis control project in a hyperendemic region in Karamoja, Uganda.

Tungiasis is a widespread and debilitating zoonotic Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD). Manual extraction of the sand fleas with non-sterile sharp instruments is the most common but unsafe treatment method in affected communities. Topical application of a dimeticone oil formula (NYDA) has previously been shown to be a safe and effective method of killing embedded sand fleas. The objective of this study was to evaluate a two-year long humanitarian One Health tungiasis control project in 17 villages in Napak district, Karamoja region, Northeastern Uganda. The community-based intervention included

Evaluating impacts of improved flooring on enteric and parasitic infections in rural households in Kenya: study protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Earthen floors are often damp or dusty and difficult to clean, providing an ideal environment for faecal pathogens and parasites. Observational studies have revealed associations between household flooring and health outcomes, but robust experimental evidence is scant. This study will evaluate the impact of an improved household flooring intervention on enteric infections, soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections and tungiasis through implementation of a cluster-randomised trial in two rural settings in Kwale and Bungoma Counties, Kenya. Assessing the impact of tungiasis on children's quality of life in Kenya.

Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea, Tunga penetrans which penetrates the skin causing considerable pain and itching. In this cross-sectional study we aimed to assess its impact on the quality of life of school children in Kenya. School pupils (198) aged 8-14 years with tungiasis were randomly selected and interviewed using a tungiasis-specific quality of life instrument (TLQI). The caregivers of each infected pupil and 199 randomly selected caregivers of uninfected pupils were interviewed using the proxy KIDscreen52 to assess their child's general health-rel

Rare case of stage four uterovaginal prolapse with vaginal tungiasis in a postmenopausal woman.

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin infestation caused by Tunga penetrans, predominantly affecting impoverished communities. In most cases, lesions are confined to the foot. Our case involves a 65-year-old para 8 woman who presented with a non-reducible stage four uterovaginal prolapse of 1-month duration, associated with intense vaginal itching. Examination revealed multiple nodules with whitish discs and central dark points on the prolapsed posterior vaginal wall. Under spinal anesthesia, surgical removal of embedded fleas was performed, followed by vaginal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingecto

Flea infestations in companion animals: Challenges in heterogeneous subtropical environments.

Fleas are important for their role as parasites causing pulicosis or tungiasis, and as vectors of pathogens that can cause diseases in humans and other animals, in tropical and subtropical regions, with a disproportionate effect linked to contexts of structural poverty and social exclusion. This study evaluated the risk factors for flea parasitism in dogs and cats from urban (Ur) and rural (Ru) households in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, through seasonal sampling between March 2017 and February 2018. Prevalence (P), mean intensity, and mean abundance of the host-associated variable were calculated

Current knowledge on fleas (Siphonaptera) associated with human plague transmission in Madagascar.

Fleas are ectoparasites of mammals and birds. Some species are known for their medical and veterinary importance. Particularly for humans and domestic animals, fleas are often merely nuisance species, but may also be disease vectors. Some well-known infectious diseases are transmitted from animals to humans by flea bites: murine typhus, spotted-fever, bartonelloses and plague. Particularly for plague, more than 80 species were reported vectors in the world and some are internationally renowned and have been the focus of studies over decades. In Madagascar, fleas are associated with two disease

Myth or truth: investigation of the jumping ability of Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera: Tungidae).

Female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans Linnaeus, 1758, Siphonaptera: Tungidae) cause a severe parasitic skin disease known as tungiasis. T. penetrans is a small flea, measuring less than 1 mm in length. The females of this species burrow into the skin of human and animal hosts and mostly affect the feet. This has led to the anecdotal assumption that T. penetrans, unlike its relatives in the Siphonaptera family, would have a limited jumping ability potentially not reaching higher body parts. However, there is no data supporting this. This study evaluated the jumping capabilities of T. penetrans for
