Electromyographic and clinical studies were performed on patients undergoing total hip replacement by the modified direct lateral (29 hips), the direct lateral (29 hips) and the posterior approaches (21 hips). Phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD) can be a threat to both life and limb and therefore must receive prompt treatment. In most clinical settings, anticoagulant therapy is standard treatment for PCD. One hundred patients 10 years of age or older with myelodysplasia were evaluated to compare located versus dislocated hips with regard to neurologic level, ambulation, hip pain, skin condition, and spinal deformity. Operated and nonoperated individuals were compared. Analysis was carried out to determine what the overall long-time function was in located, dislocated, and "relocated" individuals. Low back pain, hip pain, and muscle strain of the thigh are common in athletes. Proper rehabilitation requires proper identification. Once identified, rehabilitation must include restoration of function as well as prevention of recurrence. A pilot study was done during April 1984 through June 1986 to determine the incidence of postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) among 50 Thai patients who underwent hip surgery, which mainly consisted of total hip replacement (19 patients) and repair of hip fracture (29 patients). Intraoperative fractures of the proximal femur occurred in 40 (38 patients) of 630 (6.3%) biological ingrowth total hip arthroplasties performed between January 1984 and July 1986. Twenty-three of these fractures occurred during 131 revision arthroplasties (17.6%) and 17 during 499 primary arthroplasties (3.5%). All but two of the fractures were recognized during surgery. Patients with myelomeningocele who had had surgery to stabilise the hip were reviewed; the results of the 106 operations in 88 patients were assessed. Traumatic sacral fractures are most often due to motor vehicle or industrial accidents and are commonly associated with pelvic, urogenital, and neurological injuries. Femoral stress fractures following revision total hip arthroplasty developed about a cortical window in two patients. These cases differ from previously reported fractures in that there was no significant trauma, the pain was gradual in onset, and there was no displacement at the fracture site. A 40-year-old man with a total hip arthroplasty was injured in an auto accident. The injury was a posterior fracture-dislocation of the total hip and produced migration of a dislocated acetabular prosthesis. A large hematoma extended from the hip to the medial aspect of the thigh. This unusual case illustrates the importance of obtaining serial roentgenograms for hip arthroplasties and for injuries of the hip joint.
