INTRODUCTION: Complications related to anticoagulant therapy have been widely described, although tension haematomas in the extremities are frequently undervalued, and commonly considered banal pathologies.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Retrospective descriptive study between 2014 and 2017, including patients with limb haematomas after minimal trauma related with anticoagulant therapy, and surgically treated by Traumatology.
RESULTS: 32 cases were eventually included, 81% were women, average age of 83.56 years, and a mean aCCI of 5.97. Anatomical location of haematomas was 65.6% in leg/foot, 15.6% in

Weak hip abductors may be related with increased hip adduction and knee abduction angular movement, which may be risk factors of lower extremity injuries. As the role of eccentric hip abduction strength (EHAS) on hip adduction angular movement and knee abduction angular movement (KABD) remains unclear, the purpose of this study was to explore the association between EHAS and hip and knee angular movement. In 100 healthy male recreational runners, EHAS was quantified using an isokinetic dynamometer, while hip and knee angular movements were collected using pressure-sensitive treadmill and Codam

BACKGROUND: Professional dancers are artists as well as athletes who push their bodies beyond limits for aesthetic expression. Therefore, overuse injuries are common. We present our findings on overuse injuries in Anatolian (Turkish) folk dancers.
METHODS: The Fire of Anatolia dance group comprises of 82 dancers (37 male, 45 female) with a mean age of 27.96±5.05 yrs (range 18 to 38). Forty-one dancers from this group presented to our clinic between February 2009 and April 2016 with complaints of pain, and 25 of them had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for verification. The type, frequency, a

A woman aged 23 years with a diagnosis of mixed connective tissue disorder presented with left groin pain extending over 6 months. Workup revealed avascular necrosis of the femoral head (Grade 3) secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus and chronic steroid intake. An uncemented total hip arthroplasty was considered as the patient was only in the third decade of life. During the preop workup, careful clinical assessment had revealed multiple subcutaneous nodules affecting the extensor musculature limited to the gluteal region, anterior and posterior aspects of the thigh. The diagnosis of calci

Injuries of the hip and surrounding structures represent a complex and commonly encountered scenario in athletes, with improper diagnosis serving as a cause of delayed return to play or progression to a more serious injury. As such, radiologists play an essential role in guiding management of athletic injuries. Familiarity with hip anatomy and the advantages and limitations of various imaging modalities is of paramount importance for accurate and timely diagnosis. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is often the modality of choice for evaluating many of the injuries discussed, although preliminary

The Morel-Lavallée lesion is a closed soft-tissue degloving injury commonly associated with high-energy trauma. The thigh, hip, and pelvic region are the most commonly affected locations. Timely identification and management of a Morel-Lavallée lesion is crucial because distracting injuries in the polytraumatized patient can result in a missed or delayed diagnosis. Bacterial colonization of these closed soft-tissue injuries has resulted in their association with high rates of perioperative infection. Recently, MRI has been used to characterize and classify these lesions. Definitive management

A 75-year-old woman who had undergone hybrid metal-on-metal hip resurfacing 8 years earlier underwent revision arthroplasty because of hip, groin and lateral thigh pain. The main differential was aseptic loosening; however, serum cobalt and chromium levels were normal. Multiple imaging modalities revealed a periprosthetic, cystic soft tissue mass adjacent to the proximal femur. A large 'pseudotumour' with proximal femoral invasion was found at revision arthroplasty. We report the first finding of a 'pseudotumour' invading the proximal femur with normal metal ions following metal on metal hip r

PURPOSE: Trauma is an inevitable part of the health burden in every country. Both the preventive and rehabilitative aspects of traumatic injuries are expensive. Since most of the injuries happen in low- and middle-income developing countries, a judicious allocation of the limited resources to the most costefficient strategies is necessary. The present study was designed to report the causes of trauma, injured body regions, trauma severity scores and the one year survival rate of a randomly selected sample of trauma patients in a major referral hospital in Tehran, Iran.
METHODS: We chose and a

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of perineal pressure sores could be done with various fascio-cutaneous or musculo-cutaneous flaps, which provide cover and filling of most of pressure sores after spinal cord injuries. In rare cases, classical solutions are overtaken, then it is necessary to use more complex techniques. We report a case of a made-to-measure lower limb flap for coverage of confluent perineal pressure sores.
PATIENT AND METHOD: A 49-year-old paraplegic patient developed multiple pressure sores on left and right ischial tuberosity, inferior pubic bone and bilateral trochanters wi

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound of the thigh presents unique challenges because of the size and length of multiple structures, including tendons, muscles, nerves, and vessels. Those performing ultrasound can use a focal approach, a comprehensive approach, or a compartmental and flexible approach.
CONCLUSION: This article illustrates and summarizes our approach to ultrasound of the thigh, including unique anatomy, artifacts, and common abnormalities, with an emphasis on the advantages of performing a compartment-based and flexible ultrasound examination.

BACKGROUND: Galeazzi fractures are a rare injury to occur in adults, which are typically associated with high energy trauma. To our knowledge, the reported cases in the literature have only been associated with motor vehicle accidents, falls from a height, or athletic endeavors. The application of the force in the setting of a Galeazzi fracture has been disputed, but it is believed to occur with the wrist in hyperextension and pronation.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 27-year-old male who presented with multiple gunshot wounds that included his right forearm. The injury sustained to his right for

OBJECTIVE: Though the use of protective clothing reduces the risk of injury for motorcycle riders, not all protective clothing performs the same in crashes. A European Standard for motorcycle protective clothing (EN13595) was released in 2002 that specifies 4 zones in motorcycle clothing with different levels of protective qualities and 4 different test methods for assessing damage resistance. This project examined damage location and type in clothing worn by riders following a crash to establish the distribution of impact points and validate the zones described in EN13595.
METHOD: Data from

When the foot impacts the ground in running, large forces and loading rates can arise that may contribute to the development of overuse injuries. Investigating which biomechanical factors contribute to these impact loads and loading rates in running could assist clinicians in developing strategies to reduce these loads. Therefore, the goals of our work were to determine variables that predict the magnitude of the impact peak and loading rate during running, as well as to investigate how modulation of knee and hip muscle activity affects these variables. Instrumented gait analysis was conducted

Multiple comorbidities sometimes represent a contraindication for total hip arthroplasty (THA). Major symptoms of patients with hip pain include groin, thigh, and trochanteric pain. Groin and thigh pain arise from sensory branches of the obturator nerve, whereas trochanteric pain arises from sensory branches of the femoral nerve. Between January 2009 and October 2010, eighteen patients with chronic hip pain with several contraindications for THA were selected for a prospective study. Predenervation diagnosis was osteoarthritis in 16 patients and prolonged postoperative hip pain in 2 (1 THA, 1

Vascular malformations in extremities are difficult to detect in cases of minor trauma. The authors report a case of an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) incidentally found by ultrasonography in a contusion. After a slip down, a 52-year-old man who had undergone total arthroplasty in both hips 10 years earlier complained of an ovoid right hip swelling that had gradually increased in size. Suspecting a simple cyst or hematoma, the swelling was examined by ultrasonography, which revealed a subcutaneous hematoma with arterial flow connected to muscle. Arteriography revealed an AVM around the right

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopically guided intra-articular (FGIA) anesthetic hip joint injections have been used to determine whether the hip joint is the source of a patient's hip pain. However, there have been no reports documenting the efficacy of their use for defining the pain referral patterns (PRPs) of patients with labral tears. The aim of this study was to determine the PRPs of patients with labral tears and evaluate a new pain "circle" diagram (PCD) developed for this analysis.
METHODS: Fifty-two patients were evaluated at our institution who had: 1) a preoperative FGIA anesthetic hip join

Several case series and multiple individual case reports suggest that some subtrochanteric and femoral shaft fractures might occur in patients who have been treated with long-term bisphosphonates. Several unique clinical and radiographic features are emerging: prodromal thigh pain prior to the fracture, complete absence of trauma precipitating the fracture, and bilateral fractures in some patients. Radiographic features include presence of stress reaction, transverse or short oblique fractures, and thick femoral cortices. The overall incidence of subtrochanteric and shaft fractures combined is
