Genotypic distribution and molecular spectrum of rare and novel thalassemia variants in Ganzhou, southern China.

BACKGROUND: Thalassemia is the most common single-gene inherited blood disorder worldwide, being relatively rare in northern China but more prevalent in southern China. To facilitate effective prevention and control of thalassemia, we analyze the genotype and frequency distribution of rare thalassemia variants in the general population of the Ganzhou area, offering valuable insights for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis. METHODS: Between January 2022 and January 2025, a cohort of 84,067 individuals was screened in Ganzhou. Following the exclusion criteria, 1,081 participants with rare

Examining the role of cyanide poisoning in the autopsies of closed-space fire deaths in Istanbul (Türkiye).

BACKGROUND: Most deaths in closed-space fires occur due to inhalation of carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and other gases in the environment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study retrospectively examined 42 forensic autopsy reports and the associated crime scene reports of individuals who died in indoor fires. The autopsies were performed at the Morgue Department of the Forensic Medicine Institute in 2022 and 2023. RESULTS: Cyanide analysis was not conducted in 33.3 % of the 42 cases, and cyanide was detected in only 10.7 % of the 28 cases in which blood cyanide analysis was requested. All cas

Early Greater Trochanteric Avulsion Fracture After Posterior Approach Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Clinically Relevant and Potentially Avoidable Complication.

BACKGROUND: A greater trochanteric (GT) fracture after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a clinically relevant complication that can lead to gait abnormalities and chronic lateral hip pain. Early postoperative GT avulsion fractures are rare, possibly resulting from poor bone quality or the use of two transosseous drill holes for posterior capsular repair. Computer- and robotic-assisted surgery may increase fracture risk due to cortical defects from temporary pins. This study aimed to assess the rate of early GT fractures and identify contributing factors and prevention strategies. METHO

Forensic medical analysis of closed head acceleration-deceleration injuries: a narrative review.

A key classification of closed head injuries, particularly relevant for reconstructing trauma biomechanics and of greatest medicolegal importance, is the distinction between contact injuries and acceleration-deceleration injuries. The two most characteristic acceleration-deceleration injuries are acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and diffuse axonal injury (DAI), which both arise from acceleration forces applied to the head but differ in the duration of these forces. ASDH typically results from rapid deceleration against a firm surface, as occurs in falls, falls accompanied by blows, or traffic ac

Postmortem computed tomography identified indigestible umeboshi pit surrounded by maggot masses in oral cavity suggesting food-related choking in a decomposed body.

Determination of the cause of death is a fundamental task in forensic medicine. However, this becomes particularly challenging in cases of decomposition, where critical findings necessary for diagnosis are often obscured by putrefaction or insect activity. Here, we report a case of a man in his 70s who went missing during a summer hike and was found approximately 10 m below a trail after four days, in a state of moderate decomposition with heavy maggot infestation. Postmortem computed tomography revealed no major traumatic injuries but identified a high-density, oval-shaped foreign body, measu

Introducing the Subjective Knee Value for Daily Activity (SKV-d) and Sport (SKV-s) as Single-Item Measures to Assess Knee Function in Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are essential for assessing knee function; however, their complexity can hinder efficiency. The subjective knee value (SKV) offers a simple alternative, but lacks distinction between daily activities and sports. PURPOSE: We propose the SKV for daily activity (SKV-d) and sport (SKV-s). This study aimed to validate the SKV-d and SKV-s as simple and accurate tools for assessing knee function. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort Study (Diagnosis); Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A total of 79 consecutive athletic patients (mean age, 39 years; 49% women) wit
