BACKGROUND: Decathlon consists of various track and field running, jumping and throwing events. This results in high physical demands and poor postural control may predispose athletes at a higher risk for injury. OBJECTIVES: The relationship between knee kinematics and knee-ankle kinetics during the landing phase of single leg jumping has been widely studied to identify proper strategies for preventing non-contact ACL injury. However, there is a lack of study on knee-ankle kinetics at peak knee flexion angle during jumping from running. Hence, the purpose of this study is to establish the relationship between peak knee flexion angle, knee extension moment, ankle plantar flexion moment and ground reaction force in handball players in order to protect ACL from excessive stress during single leg jumping.

An 81-year-old man from rural Australia presented with right pretibial cellulitis 7 days after minor trauma against furniture. He failed to improve despite antibiotics and surgical debridement. Subsequent cultures grew the rare fungus Saksenaea vasiformis, which was treated with further surgical debridement, amphotericin B and posaconazole. This was successful and the patient made a full recovery. We present the case and discuss lessons learnt.

CONTEXT: The medial head of the gastrocnemius is the third most commonly strained muscle in elite athletes after the biceps femoris and rectus femoris. The differential diagnosis of posterior calf injury includes musculoskeletal and nonmusculoskeletal causes. Classically, delineation of these injuries from one another relied primarily on historical features and physical examination findings.
