Kinship Analysis Confirms Tolerant Galapagos Mockingbirds Are a Source of Nest Flies That Threaten Darwin's Finches.

Host species have evolved different strategies for dealing with parasites. 'Vulnerable' hosts, which suffer reduced fitness from parasites, are under selection to evolve defences. 'Tolerant' hosts, by contrast, avoid reductions in fitness by mitigating parasite damage. When tolerant and vulnerable hosts co-occur, tolerant hosts may pose an indirect threat to vulnerable hosts by serving as a source of parasite infestation. Avian vampire flies (Philornis downsi) are introduced parasites of Galapagos mockingbirds (Mimus parvulus) and Darwin's finches. Mockingbirds are relatively tolerant, while f

Semiochemicals and odorant receptors underlying potato cultivar susceptibility and resistance to potato tuber moth.

Infestation of potato by the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella) varies markedly among cultivars, yet the chemical and molecular mechanisms underlying this variation remain poorly understood. Here, we combine field surveys, chemical ecology, functional genomics, and structural modeling to reveal how cultivar-specific volatile profiles shape moth oviposition behavior and pest outcomes. Field and laboratory assays identified marked differences in adult attraction, oviposition, and larval damage among potato cultivars, which correlated with distinct blends of emitted volatile organic comp

Field evaluation of Nzi and modified Nzi traps for sampling of Stomoxys calcitrans at dairy farms in Uruguay.

Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758), the stable fly, is a hematophagous pest that affects animal livestock worldwide by lowering productivity and mechanically transmitting pathogens. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Nzi trap and a modified version (with and without bait) for capturing stable flies on two dairy farms in southwestern Uruguay, under conditions of natural infestation by these flies. The study used a 4 × 4 Latin square design with five replicates conducted independently at each dairy farm. Traps at each dairy were emptied daily to identify and count stable flies befor

Fixation of knockdown resistance mutations in Cimex hemipterus (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) from east Iran.

The tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (F.), is an obligate blood-feeding ectoparasite and a well-established pest in urban settings, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Insecticide resistance is one of the main challenges in bed bug management worldwide, with pyrethroid resistance being especially widespread. Iran's diverse geography and climate support the presence of both Cimex lectularius L. and C. hemipterus, with the latter being commonly found in the warmer, arid eastern provinces. In this study, we investigated the target site mutations that underlie pyrethroid resistance

UAV-based real-time detection of corn earworm using EfficientNet and machine learning.

Early detection of corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea) is crucial for subsiding corn crop losses and make sure supportable agricultural productivity. Traditional monitoring methods, composed of manual field inspections and pheromone traps, are often time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to hindered detection. This study develops an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based, real-time detection system for corn earworm infestations using progressive artificial intelligence techniques. Multispectral and thermal images were collected from three corn fields throughout the 2024 growing season, including n

Symbiont dominance and microbiome dysbiosis in wheat-aphid revealed through 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis.

Insect herbivory represents a major biotic stress that leads to significant losses in crop yield and quality worldwide. Aphids, in particular, damage wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a staple crop that provides nearly 20% of the global protein and caloric intake, and also harbor diverse bacterial symbionts that can influence plant health. In this study, 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to characterize the bacterial communities associated with healthy and aphid-infested wheat plants. Alpha-diversity indices, including Simpson, Shannon, Chao1, and ACE, revealed statistically significant

Host-Associated Occurrence of Wolbachia in Natural Populations of the Pyriform Scale Protopulvinaria pyriformis (Cockerell, 1894) in Moroccan Orchards.

Scale insects are a highly diverse group of phloem-feeding pest insects that cause economic losses in a wide range of cultivated crops worldwide. Among these pests, Protopulvinaria pyriformis (Cockerell, 1894), recently reported in Morocco, represents an emerging threat to citrus (Citrus spp.) and avocado (Persea americana) production, two strategically important crops in the country. Like other hemipterans, P. pyriformis maintains close associations with prokaryotic endosymbionts, particularly Wolbachia, a facultative intracellular bacterium capable of influencing host reproduction, populatio

Evaluation of the efficiency of tree injection of Norway spruce against the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) (Coleoptera: Scolytinae).

BACKGROUND: Ips typographus is the most important pest of Norway spruce (Picea abies), responsible for large-scale outbreaks in Central Europe that have led to extensive mortality of spruce stands. Control strategies rely primarily on timely sanitary felling, while other methods, including tree injection, play only a supplementary role. RESULTS: In 2022 and 2023, the efficacy of tree injection with emamectin benzoate was evaluated on Norway spruce. At each of 10 study sites, five trees were injected with 4 mL of 4.5% solution per hole drilled and five control trees were selected. All trees we

Efficacy of Trichoderma spp. spore suspensions against cotton-infesting spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae).

Spider mites, particularly Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. turkestani Ugarov and Nikolskii (Acari: Tetranychidae), are major agricultural pests, and their increasing resistance to chemical acaricides underscores the need for alternative control strategies. This study explored the biocontrol potential of Trichoderma spp. against these mites. Specifically, we evaluated (1) the efficacy of spore suspensions from five isolates of four Trichoderma species (Trichoderma afroharzianum, T. guizhouense, T. harzianum and T. virens) and their combinations on different biological stages of T. urticae, (2)

Coevolution stabilizes the honey bee-Varroa destructor-virus system on islands.

For 65 years, the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, along with the deformed wing virus (DWV) it vectors, has killed millions of Apis mellifera honey bee colonies globally. The coevolution of the 'bee-mite-virus' system in Hawaii over 17 years has been closely followed. Resistance to V. destructor evolved in the free-living honey bees on Oahu by detecting and removing a high proportion of mite-infested brood cells, as seen in other mite-resistant honey bees. On Big Island, miticides remain widely used, so on both islands, DWV prevalence decreased, but a more virulent recombinant form evolve

Evaluation of deployment strategies for attracticidal spheres for management of the invasive Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in conventional and organic small fruit production systems.

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), spotted-wing drosophila is an extremely destructive, invasive global pest of small fruit production. Frequent insecticide applications are the most commonly used management tool against this pest, as females deposit eggs in ripening fruit leading to larval infestation at harvest. However, other strategies aimed at reducing D. suzukii infestation continue to be explored to reduce reliance on insecticides and increase ecological sustainability. One such strategy is deployment of attracticidal spheres; these are visually attractive red spheres that provide a contin

Comparative study of the biology of the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) on potential host grains grown in Burkina Faso.

The recent records of Prostephanus truncatus Horn (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) in certain regions of Burkina Faso make it a potential pest for maize, its preferred host, and for other cereals grown in the country. To estimate the extent of its possible large-scale invasion, we determined its survival and reproductive parameters on grains of maize, red sorghum, millet, and paddy rice. Bioassays consisted of infesting healthy grains from each of the four cereals, contained in Petri dishes, with a pair of P. truncatus aged up to 24 h old. Observations were made daily to replace the grains and colle

From reservoirs to ecological integrators: the role of European Apodemus spp. in vector-borne zoonotic pathogens.

Rodents of the genus Apodemus are among the most widespread and abundant small mammals in Europe and play a central role in the ecology of numerous zoonotic pathogens. Owing to their ecological plasticity, high population densities, and frequent infestation by arthropod vectors, Apodemus species contribute to the maintenance and transmission of a diverse array of bacterial, viral, and protozoan agents of public health concern. This narrative review synthesises current knowledge on vector-borne pathogens associated with European Apodemus spp. and highlights marked heterogeneity in species-speci

Assessment of agronomic traits in fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) resistant maize (Zea mays) hybrids grown in the derived savanna agro-ecology of Nigeria.

Maize production in Nigeria has increased in recent years, but fall armyworm infestation remains a major constraint to high productivity, particularly during the minor cropping season. Twenty-six fall armyworm-resistant maize hybrids and six commercial checks were evaluated for grain yield and other traits using an 8 × 4 alpha-lattice design with three replications. Data collected at key growth stages and harvesting were analyzed using R statistical software version 4.4.2. Hybrids exhibited significant (p < 0.05) differences for grain yield, plant aspect, ear aspect, southern corn leaf blight,

Fruit Damage Alters Headspace Volatile Chemistry and Host Attraction in Drosophila suzukii.

Spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a destructive pest of ripening berries and stone fruits. D. suzukii is attracted to ripening fruit volatiles, allowing it to occupy a distinct ecological niche from other Drosophila species. Ripening fruit volatiles act as relatively specific cues, which can be leveraged for pest management. Here, we tested whether volatiles from damaged host fruit serve as attractive adult host-finding cues. Using multivariate analysis, we characterized the headspace of mechanically damaged or undamaged blueberries and strawberries, find
