Tsetse-fly control and eradication.

In many instances the cheapest and quickest way of controlling trypanosomiasis is to reduce the number of vectors and the opportunities for contact between man and vector. For permanent results, moreover, eradication of the vectors is necessary, since eradication of trypanosomiasis by chemotherapeutic means has so far not proved feasible. For a variety of reasons, game destruction as a method of fly control is gradually being replaced by other methods. Of these, the complete removal of bush cover will always effectively eradicate tsetse flies, but in order to save time, labour and money, partia

Human trypanosomiasis in south-east Uganda. A further study of the epidemiology of the disease among fishermen and peasant cultivators.

During the past two decades there has been an increase in the incidence and spread of sleeping-sickness due to Trypanosoma rhodesiense throughout the north-eastern shore area of Lake Victoria; this increase has been associated with heightened finishing activity and increasing and irregular settlement of the tsetse-fly belt of south-east Uganda. The author describes a number of epidemiological factors affecting the occurrence of the disease among fishermen, placing emphasis on the correct development of the local fishing industry to avoid, on the one hand, depleting the fish population and, on t

Some principles of the epidemiology of human trypanosomiasis in Africa.

Human trypanosomiasis in Africa is treated as a disease complex in which three main elements are involved, the vertebrate host, the parasite and the insect vector, and the epidemiology is discussed in terms of the three pairs of relationships between these elements.Under host-vector relationships the significance of the type of man-fly contact is pointed out and an outline given of how it may be determined, and transmission of the disease influenced, by human activities, climatic factors and other conditions, in both Trypanosoma gambiense and T. rhodesiense sleeping-sickness.Under host-parasit

Powassan and Silverwater viruses: ecology of two Ontario arboviruses.

Powassan virus was isolated from a pool of Ixodes marxi ticks collected during late August 1962, from a red squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, and from blood obtained from a red squirrel during early October 1962 near Powassan, Ontario, where a child contracted fatal encephalitis due to this virus in September 1958. The frequent detection of Powassan virus neutralizing antibody in sera of squirrels captured during autumn, but rarely at other seasons, and the frequent I. marxi infestation of squirrels, some of which contain antibody, but the lack of occurrence of I. marxi on other forest rodent

Mass administration of an antimalarial drug combining 4-aminoquinoline and 8-aminoquinoline in Tanganyika.

For the eradication of malaria from hyperendemic regions of tropical Africa it is apparent that use may have to be made of antimalarial drugs, administered individually on a census basis, in addition to measures directed against the mosquito. The suppressive activity of existing compounds among individuals having different degrees of immunity is well established, and trials among large groups of people have been conducted with single drugs and with combination of drugs. In the large-scale trials carried out in Tanganyika and described in this paper, such a combination, containing amodiaquine f

Detection of antibodies in blood meals of hematophagous Diptera.

Antibodies are detectable by an agglutination technique in the blood meals of hematophagous Diptera that are fed on laboratory and domestic animals infected with organisms of the Trypanosoma brucei subgroup. It is likely that both the antibody status and the identity of the animal fed on can be determined from the same blood meal from wild Diptera. The technique may be applicable to other infections for which sensitive serological tests are available.

Entomological aspects of African onchocerciasis and observations on Simulium in the Sudan.

Following a review of the literature on Simuliidae, relevant to the African scene, since 1955, the authors present observations made on Simulium damnosum at Mvolo, Equatoria, and along the Damer reach of the Nile, in the Sudan and consider these in relation to the economic importance of this species and the possibilities for control of the fly and of onchocerciasis transmitted by it.Meta-diethyltoluamide has been shown to be an effective repellent against this species, and the authors suggest that this or some other modern insect repellent might usefully be made available locally. It is suggest

The identification of infective filarial larvae in Simuliidae.

Although it is recognized that the presence of animal filariae can lead to confusion in the interpretation of infection rates in mosquito vectors of filariasis, the filariae found in man-biting simuliids are usually assumed to be Onchocerca volvulus. The authors of this paper emphasize that it is unwise to calculate transmission indices from infection rates in man-biting simuliids unless there is confidence in the identification of the filarial larvae. In this respect they cite their observations on Mount Elgon in Uganda which show that the majority of the filarial larvae in Simulium neavei-th

Some considerations relating to the role of Culex pipiens fatigans Wiedemann in the transmission of human filariasis.

This paper is concerned mainly with the relationship between microfilarial periodicity and vector periodicity. The so-called "non-periodic" Pacific form of Wuchereria bancrofti in fact shows a well-marked and relatively constant periodicity. The amplitude of this periodicity is low, which may account for the difficulty of detecting it in small clinical samples. The periodicity is well adapted to the biting cycle of Aëdes polynesiensis, though less so than that of the "semi-periodic" Brugia malayi to forest Mansonioides. Microfilarial periodicity is discussed in the light of recent work on circ

A parasitological survey in three selected communities in Luapula Province, Northern Rhodesia.

The authors present the results of a parasitological survey conducted among children living in three rural and geographically separate communities selected for the work of the Health and Nutrition Scheme, Fort Rosebery, Northern Rhodesia. The survey included observations on Plasmodium spp. and other parasites of the blood, Endamoeba spp., and helminth and arthropod parasites. In addition, data on the distribution and taxonomy of local anophelines and fresh-water molluscs are given. As was expected, malaria, urinary bilharziasis and hookworm were the most important parasitic infections recorded,

Observations on phlebotomine sandflies in Iran.

A survey of the sandfly population of Iran was conducted in the interests of providing further knowledge of the biology of these vectors of leishmaniasis, sandfly fever and kalaazar. The search for specimens was carried out in the Tabriz, Sarab, Caspian Sea, Teheran and Kazerun areas, both inside buildings and in natural habitats. In addition, a collection of sandflies from the Varamin Plain was examined.A new species and a known species new to Iran were found. As in many parts of the Palaearctic Region, the sandfly fauna is distinguished by a large proportion of members of the subgenus Phlebo

Gamma-BHC/cereclor-a new, long-acting lindane formulation for malaria control.

Sorption of insecticides by muds and other materials used in the construction of native huts prolongs their duration of action or persistence. The use of gamma-BHC as a residual insecticide has been limited by the fact that its sorption by most materials is of a low order, so that it is comparatively short acting. If gamma-BHC is melted with a resin, the solid solution can be converted into a water-dispersible powder which is much more persistent on sorptive and semi-sorptive surfaces. Laboratory experiments had shown that the best results were obtained with a proprietary resin known as Cerecl

The significance of irritability, behaviouristic avoidance and allied phenomena in malaria eradication.

A review of the literature dealing with irritability and other behaviour phenomena shown by anopheline mosquitos in relation to house treatment with residual insecticides has indicated the need for a re-appraisal of terms and criteria. A general term, "behaviouristic avoidance", has been proposed to deal with all those aspects of behaviour in which mosquitos, irritated by sub-lethal contact with insecticide-treated surfaces, can escape apparently unharmed from treated houses.A critical examination of relevant figures has as yet failed to reveal any convincing proof as to the existence of behav

Safety of malathion dusting powder for louse control.

Because some strains of body lice are resistant to DDT and gamma-BHC, there is need for other effective, safe chemicals to control them. Malathion is known to be effective at a concentration of 1%. To test its safety, the bodies and clothing of 39 men were dusted 5 times a week for 8-16 weeks with talcum powder containing 0, 1%, 5%, and 10% malathion. Complaints about odour and skin irritation were roughly proportional to dosage. No change in blood cholinesterase activity was found, except perhaps with 10% powder. Urinary excretion of malathion-derived material was proportional to dosage. No o

Vivax-type malaria parasite of macaques transmissible to man.

Transmission of Plasmodium cynomolgi bastianellii from rhesus monkeys to two human subjects by Anopheles freeborni and the occurrence of attacks of malaria in two other laboratory workers not exposed to human malaria suggests the existence of an animal reservoir of infection complicating malaria control and eradication.

Methods of water-flow measurement applicable to Simulium control.

For the effective control of the Simuliidae-and for a variety of other public health activities-it is important to determine with reasonable accuracy the rate and volume of flow of the rivers and streams which they infest. The field worker requires for this purpose an instrument that is at once cheap and easy to handle. The author of this paper reviews a number of means and instruments available for water-flow measurement and devotes special attention to the Pitot tube, which is well suited to the conditions encountered in Simulium control schemes.
