A Compendium Review of the Global Epidemiology of Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases: Regional Insights from Türkiye.

Vector-borne diseases have historically posed significant threats to plants, humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, with their impact being especially pronounced in tropical and subtropical regions. Among these, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have emerged as an increasingly critical global concern. This growing threat is largely driven by the expanding geographic range of ticks and the wide array of pathogens they transmit, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, fungi, and infectious prion proteins. The global cumulative economic impact of the challenges caused by ticks and TBDs contri

A multicentric study on understanding the bionomics of Indian malaria vectors across diverse eco-epidemiological settings.

BACKGROUND: India aims to eliminate malaria by 2030; however, a thorough understanding of the current biology and behavior of vector species will facilitate the efforts. Vector species often alter their biting and resting behaviors in response to long-term chemical control measures, posing significant challenges to ongoing vector control interventions. Therefore, it is essential to investigate and update our knowledge of the bionomics of malaria vectors in the current context. METHODS: This study was carried out across 14 districts in eight Indian states between 2021 and 2023, employing vario

Low exposure of dogs to ticks and Rickettsia spp. in the vicinity of the largest inland Atlantic rainforest remnant in Southern Brazil.

Dogs accessing natural areas in Brazil are exposed to tick species typically associated with wild carnivores, some of which are vectors of pathogenic Rickettsia. Infested dogs may transport ticks into households and act as amplifying hosts for these agents. Iguaçu National Park (INP), a major inland Atlantic Forest reserve in Brazil, harbors at least nine tick species and five Rickettsia species. This study evaluated tick infestation in 116 rural dogs from properties along most of the 420 km perimeter of INP and 22 urban dogs from forest-adjacent areas in Foz do Iguaçu. Sera from 39 dogs were

The symbiotic Wolbachia in Anopheles and its role in reducing the transmission of Plasmodium: updates and prospects.

Reducing malaria transmission and the prospects for vector control include multi-pronged strategies, such as interrupting the parasite cycle in both vectors and mosquitoes. Effective vector control remains essential to prevent malaria transmission. This is all the more important as problems such as resistance to insecticides and the lack of a highly effective malaria vaccine remain. New generation vector control measures and optimised products are essential to address the public health needs for malaria eradication. Strategies to reduce malaria transmission include the use of insecticide-treat

Beyond poverty, tungiasis is associated with family characteristics and parenting behavior: a case control study in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans. Female fleas burrow into the skin, typically of the feet, producing inflammation, pain, and itching. Although poverty is a major risk factor, not all households or children in the lowest economic bracket are affected, and boys appear disproportionately infected. This study investigated environmental and behavioral characteristics of households and children to explain these variations. METHODS: A total of 3,871 pupils (equal numbers of boys and girls) aged 8-14 years from 44 primary schools in K

Prevalence of Ixodid Tick Infestation Among Small Ruminants in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tick infestation and tick-borne diseases remain a major threat to small ruminant production in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, favourable ecological and climatic conditions promote the survival of ixodid ticks, yet no systematic evidence has summarized their overall prevalence in sheep and goats. METHODS: Following the PRISMA 2020 guideline, a systematic search was conducted in databases (ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Wiley Online Library and African Journals Online) and other sources (Google Scholar and Google Engine). Studies published between January 2012 and

Occurrence and Haematology of Canine Tick-Borne Protozoa in Dhaka City, Bangladesh.

Dogs, being companion animals, serve a variety of economic, social and cultural purposes. However, diseases caused by the tick-borne protozoans are drawing attention globally due to their zoonotic transmission. In this context, the present study aimed to observe the occurrence of tick-borne protozoan infections as well as some selective haematological parameters of stray dogs in Dhaka city, Bangladesh. A total of 160 dogs from various places were selected randomly and examined for both tick and protozoan infection. Only one species of hard tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, was identified, where

A riddle wrapped in an enigma: parasitic lice as clues to the evolutionary puzzle of Sapayoa (Aves).

Parasites can provide powerful insights into host evolution and biogeography. The bird Sapayoa aenigma, the only Neotropical member of the otherwise Old World clade Eurylaimides, has long puzzled ornithologists due to its phylogenetic placement and uncertain biogeographic origin. We investigated the evolutionary origin of a chewing louse in the genus Myrsidea found on Sapayoa. Using genome-wide data from 91 Myrsidea specimens from oscine, suboscine and non-passerine hosts, we reconstructed a global phylogeny to evaluate hypotheses about the origin of Sapayoa and its parasite. Phylogenomic, mol

Microclimates, land cover, and socioeconomic vulnerability shape Anopheles hotspots in Maryland, USA.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles mosquitoes pose notable public health concerns as competent vectors of malaria and other diseases. Although malaria is no longer endemic in the United States, recent locally acquired cases in states including Maryland highlight the need to better understand Anopheles dynamics in the region. This study aimed to identify geographic hotspots of Anopheles presence in Maryland and evaluate how land cover, microclimatic conditions, and socioeconomic vulnerability shape their spatial and temporal distribution. METHODS: Monthly Anopheles occurrence data (1999-2024) from Global B

Acute bee paralysis virus regulation of microRNA expression dynamics in the insect host (Apis mellifera) cell line, AmE-711.

BACKGROUND: Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are essential pollinators that support global food production and economic stability. Their health and survival are threatened by diminishing floral resources, pesticide exposure, parasitic mites, and microbial and viral diseases. Among these stressors, viral infections are particularly challenging, often exacerbated by the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, a competent vector of multiple honey bee viruses. Understanding the mechanisms underlying honey bee-virus interactions is critical for mitigating the negative impact of infections on colony health. On

Occurrence of Argulus sp. Infestation with Dual Bacterial Co-infection Caused by Aeromonas hydrophila and Enterococcus faecalis in Oscar Fish (Astronotus ocellatus): A Case Report.

A case of mild Argulus sp. infestation was reported in 30 Oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus). Infestation was managed with diflubenzuron (0.01 mg/L of water). Following the second treatment, six fish developed panexophthalmia, with three mortalities-two showing ascites. A single fish exhibiting clinical signs of ascites was successfully sampled, from which ascitic fluid, whole blood, and visceral organs were collected for subsequent laboratory analyses. Microbiological analysis of ascitic fluid identified Aeromonas hydrophila and Enterococcus faecalis, where A. hydrophila was sensitive to tetra

Development of an RT-PCR assay for American Phlebotomine-transmitted Bunyaviricetes and isolation of Pacuvirus (Peribunyaviridae) in dogs with canine visceral Leishmaniasis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Sand fly vectors harbor and transmit Leishmania parasites and other pathogens, including arboviruses, to vertebrate hosts. The geographical distribution of phleboviruses transmitted by sand flies in areas affected by leishmaniasis has prompted research into coinfection in vectors and in Leishmania reservoirs in Europe and Africa. Despite the widespread occurrence of canine visceral Leishmaniasis in Brazil and the identification of several viruses carried by sand flies, the issue of coinfection remains unclear. We developed an RT-PCR-based assay to detect segmented (-) RNA arboviruses from the

Four-year monitoring of the malaria vector Anopheles funestus in central-west Cameroon reveals an escalation of pyrethroid resistance combined with high malaria transmission.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance presents a critical obstacle to malaria vector control, necessitating ongoing surveillance to guide control strategy. Despite widespread resistance in central Africa, the temporal adaptive changes driving resistance at both phenotypic and genetic levels remain uncharacterised. This study provides a comprehensive, four-year (2020-2023) assessment of Anopheles funestus s.s. in Mibellon, Cameroon, examining sporozoite infection rates and changes in insecticide resistance relative to 2015-2018 data. METHODS: Susceptibility profile, resistance intensity and cone

Reduced bioefficacy of used LLINs against natural populations of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato in the centre and east regions of Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are crucial for malaria prevention in Cameroon, yet their operational performance may be compromised because of deterioration of the physical integrity and bioefficacy of nets. This study evaluated LLINs, physical integrity, and bioefficacy following mass distribution campaigns in two regions in Cameroon: East (Bertoua) and Centre (Eyang). METHODS: Household surveys were conducted to assess ITN ownership, usage patterns, and maintenance practices. Net condition was measured using the proportionate hole index (pHI), and bio-efficacy was assess

Pathogenic bacterial species and the microbiome of cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) inhabiting flea-infested homes.

BACKGROUND: Ctenocephalides felis is a common ectoparasite of dogs and cats and can transmit a variety of pathogens including Bartonella and Rickettsia species. These bacteria, along with the known endosymbiont Wolbachia, are well-documented members of the C. felis microbiome, but species-level information is limited. Additionally, little is known about the variation in the C. felis microbiome in fleas from different sources and when different sequencing methods are applied to the same samples. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the flea microbiome using both short-read (V3/V4) and l

Efficacy of injectable versus topical formulation of ivermectin against Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes feeding on different body locations of treated Holstein calves.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health concern and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. One strategy to reduce populations of zoophagic Anopheles (i.e., likely to feed on other animals as well as humans) is the use of systemic veterinary parasiticides. The most widely systemic parasiticide used for this purpose is ivermectin. Ivermectin is available for livestock in two formulations; injectable and topical "pour-on." The purpose of this study was to evaluate the survival and fecundity of a zoophagic species, Anopheles stephensi, when fed on calves treate

An innovative concept of using community information for surveys and developing a map of Simulium breeding sites.

BACKGROUND: Having a Simulium vector distribution map is important for all entomological and epidemiological aspects for the elimination of onchocerciasis. Developing these maps using topographic maps has some limitations such as identifying the exact locations of rapids, especially with low-scale maps. This leads to breeding sites being missed during prospecting. Recent efforts to map breeding sites involve the development of technologies such as satellite images, remote sensing modelling and drones. The limitations of these technologies include cost, security concerns and tree cover preventi
