Exploring the importance and preference of sugar feeding behaviour of malaria vectors in sugar plantations of southern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Reliable tools are needed to control opportunistic outdoor biting and resting malaria vectors that remain beyond the reach of indoor targeted interventions. The attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) have demonstrated effectiveness in some settings but have shown limited impact in other areas, in part due to differences in mosquito species' preferences and the presence of competing natural sugar sources. We evaluated the sugar-feeding preferences of Anopheles gambiae in Chikwawa, southern Malawi, to inform context specific sugar-based vector control interventions. METHODS: Using

Prevalence and Intensity of Parasitic Insects on Puerto Rican Birds.

Birds are host to four orders of parasitic insects: flies (Diptera), lice (Psocodea: Phthiraptera), true bugs (Hemiptera), and fleas (Siphonaptera). These parasites can lower host fitness and thus require birds to invest in defenses to minimize fitness losses. In Puerto Rico, virulent parasites, such as Philornis spp. flies, threaten endangered species and subspecies of birds. Philornis larvae are hematophagous and burrow beneath the skin of both nestling and adult birds. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the prevalence and intensity of subcutaneous Philornis flies of adult birds in Pue

Factors Associated With the Emergence and Spread of Visceral Leishmaniasis in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), once considered a rural disease in Brazil, has progressively urbanised, particularly in the state of São Paulo (SSP), where the first urban cases emerged after the detection of the vector Lutzomyia longipalpis in 1997. METHODS: This study explores the environmental, climatic, socioeconomic, and infrastructural factors associated with the expansion and establishment of VL in urban areas of SSP. For the statistical analysis, two types of models were developed. First, for all municipalities (with or without VL), the logistic regression model was used. S

A century of passive surveillance reveals widespread triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) across North Carolina, including detection of the Chagas disease parasite.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasitic protozoan that causes Chagas disease, can be transmitted via bite wound contamination with feces from triatomines ("kissing bugs," Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae). Often thought of as restricted to Central and South America, kissing bugs live throughout North America, including North Carolina and other southern regions of the United States. In this assessment of kissing bugs in North Carolina, data were gathered from clinic samples and public submissions to online and university collections. Climate data were obtained through the National Oceanic and Atmosp

Malaria vector surveillance in Indonesia: COX1 phylogenetic reveals monophyletic clades and cryptic diversity in Anopheles mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Anopheles mosquitoes are key malaria vectors, their high diversity influences transmission competence. Accurate species identification is crucial for understanding malaria epidemiology and implementing effective vector control strategies. The COX1 gene is a widely used DNA barcoding marker for Anopheles due to its high mutation rate and species-specific variations. This study evaluates the consistency of morphological and molecular identification using COX1, analyzes phylogenetic relationships, and explores the implications of these findings for malaria vector control st

Evaluation of the insecticide custody chain and its relationship with malaria burden in the Brazilian Amazon: a process and exploratory impact assessment (2019-2023).

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health concern in Brazil, with the Amazon region accounting for 99.9% of the country's cases. Indoor residual spraying (IRS) using Etofenprox 20% PM is a core vector control strategy. However, inefficiencies in the insecticide custody chain, including planning, storage, and distribution, may compromise intervention effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the insecticide custody chain from a process perspective, identifying logistical bottlenecks, while also exploring potential impact by examining associations between insecticide alloc

Infestation rate of bovid short nose lice (Haematopinus tuberculatus) among different breeds of buffaloes and associated risk factors in rural farming of Pakistan.

A short-nosed louse, Haematopinus tuberculatus, infestation among different breeds of buffaloes in rural farming systems poses a potential threat to animals' health and milk production. A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the infestation rate of H. tuberculatus across different breeds of buffaloes and to identify potential associated risk factors by examining 1200 animals during surveys of 150 rural farms in Sialkot, Pakistan. Among 1200 sampled animals, a high overall infestation rate of 78.8% was observed. The Kundhi breed exhibited the highest infestation rate (∼85%), followed

First molecular detection of Babesia caballi in camel associated ticks in Uzbekistan, with no evidence of Anaplasma or Rickettsia.

Dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) have an important role in food and textile production in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, yet data on their tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) is scarce, especially in Central Asia. This study aimed to: (i) identify the ticks infesting camels from different regions of Uzbekistan, (ii) molecularly detect TBPs in the collected ticks for the first time. In 2024, 290 camels from three regions (Karakalpakstan, Jizzakh, and Navoi) were examined for tick infestation. Ticks were collected, morphologically identified, pooled, and screened using PCR and sequencing

Adapting lessons from the Indian subcontinent to accelerate elimination of visceral leishmaniasis as a public health problem in East Africa.

This viewpoint draws lessons from the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem in the Southeast Asia region (SEAR) to inform efforts in East Africa (EA), now the global epicenter of Leishmania donovani transmission. VL is fatal and there is no licensed vaccine. Success in India relied on robust surveillance, rapid diagnosis, single-dose treatment, vector control, and multi-partner coordination. EA faces additional challenges than SEAR with multiple sand fly vectors, sensitive diagnostics and longer treatment regimens, high population mobility, and gaps in ecologica

CONVERGENT EVOLUTION BETWEEN ENDOSYMBIOTIC BACTERIA IN FEATHER-FEEDING LICE.

Parasitic feather-feeding lice have diets rich in amino acids but deficient in essential B vitamins. Around 22% of feather-feeding louse species are host to vertically inherited endosymbiotic bacteria belonging to the genus Sodalis. These endosymbiotic Sodalis species have undergone genome degeneration, with genes supporting amino acid synthesis being lost, while genes required for B vitamin synthesis are largely retained. However, several species of lice are host to endosymbionts belonging to proteobacteria genera other than Sodalis. It is unknown if these other endosymbionts have undergone a

Blood host preferences and competitive inter-species dynamics within an African malaria vector species complex inferred from signs of animal activity around aquatic larval habitats.

BACKGROUND: The feeding behaviours of the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis, and its competitive relationships with other sibling species within the Anopheles gambiae complex, remain largely unexplored within well conserved natural ecosystems, where its known preferred hosts are scarce or absent. METHODS: Potential aquatic habitats were surveyed for An. gambiae complex larvae across a gradient of natural ecosystem integrity in southern Tanzania, encompassing fully domesticated human settlements, a partially encroached Wildlife Management Area (WMA), and well conserved natural ecosystems wit

Acomys cahirinus seurati as a Potential Reservoir Host of Leishmania major.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania major is a zoonotic disease transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Identification of reservoir hosts is critical for understanding transmission and guiding control. While Psammomys obesus and Meriones shawi are recognized reservoirs in North Africa, the role of other rodents remains unclear. We experimentally assessed the reservoir potential of Acomys cahirinus seurati from southeastern Algeria. Animals were intradermally infected, and clinical signs and infectiousness to sand flies were monitored. Parasite persistence in skin and visceral tis

Investigation of a novel assay for the proteomic screening of the secretory and excretory products of individual salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

Secretions are central to the ability of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis to parasitize salmonid hosts by promoting immunomodulation and feeding. Previous characterizations of secretory and excretory products (SEPs) have relied on pooled individuals, preventing assessment of inter-individual variation and responses to host-derived cues. A novel SEP collection method was developed to obtain samples from individual adult female L. salmonis, enabling evaluation of secretory profiles following exposure to conditioned seawater from a susceptible host, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), or a res

First record of Phlebotomus (Larroussius) orientalis (Parrot, 1936) (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Israel: phylogeographic placement and implications for leishmaniasis surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are the principal vectors of Leishmania spp., the causative agents of leishmaniasis. Since 2008, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Israel have conducted nationwide, periodic sand fly surveys. Initially, these surveys focused on localities with known endemic transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis, but in recent years, entomological trapping has expanded to areas where prior information on sand flies was unavailable. Here we report the first confirmed occurrence of Phlebotomus (Larroussius) orientali

Nationally representative programmatic surveillance of mosquito and human behaviours that influence human exposure to malaria transmission and the impact of vector control across Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Integrated entomological and anthropological surveillance of interacting mosquito and human behaviours is critical for understanding malaria transmission risks and for tailoring intervention packages, but it is yet to be implemented at scale due to a lack of practical, affordable procedures for nationally representative monitoring. This study in Tanzania introduces and field-tests the first such scalable framework design and reports summaries of the earliest data generated, thus demonstrating its feasibility and utility for generating programmatically informative indicators of both

Forecasting future trends in canine leishmaniasis through dynamic modeling.

This study analyzes the temporal evolution of canine leishmaniasis in the province of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain) over the past four decades using historical case records from local animal shelters (2018-2022) and publicly available epidemiological datasets (1985-1994). All this information was compiled to construct long-term positivity trends and compare them with regional temperature records obtained from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya. To forecast future incidence, we adapted an existing single-season SEIRD model of human leishmaniasis into a multiseason dual-host system (dogs and sa
