Analysis of deep learning techniques in computer-aided diagnosis for meniscus injuries: a systematic literature review.

Meniscus informatics is a growing subject of study in the healthcare industry. One of the major hindrances to the healthcare system's transformation is obtaining knowledge and meaningful information from complicated, high-dimensional and diverse sources. Modern biomedical research, for instance, has seen an increase in the use of complex, dissimilar, poorly documented, and generally unstructured electronic health records, imaging, sensor data and text, even after many current techniques have been used to extract more robust and useful elements from the data for analysis. New efficient standard

Beyond the ACL: The Hidden Impact of Ramp Tears on Knee Stability.

Medial meniscus ramp lesions have emerged as a critical but frequently overlooked contributor to knee instability, particularly in the context of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Recent advances in imaging and arthroscopic techniques have improved their detection and classification, enhancing our understanding of their anatomical and functional significance. Evidence indicates that untreated ramp lesions may perpetuate instability and alter knee biomechanics, underscoring the need for structured, individualized treatment. Although multiple arthroscopic repair strategies have been pro

Emergency Free Flap Reconstruction in Traumatic Extremity Injuries: Clinical Indications and Framework.

BACKGROUND: Emergency free flap reconstruction (EFFR) involves flap coverage performed during initial operative intervention or within 24 h after traumatic injury. Although EFFR offers notable advantages, standardized criteria for its application are not well established. This manuscript proposes a treatment framework outlining three primary indications for EFFR, including the use of viable tissue from spare parts. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 14 patients (15 flaps) with traumatic limb-threatening injuries treated with EFFR across two academic centers from 2016 to 2024. Data collected

An Acta Orthopaedica educational article: Current strategies for meniscal preservation in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Meniscal preservation is a cornerstone of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), reflecting the meniscus' critical role in joint homeostasis and long-term knee health. Concomitant meniscal injuries are common and increasingly managed with repair rather than resection. This educational review summarizes current strategies for the most frequent acute meniscal tears encountered during ACLR. Contemporary practice favors repair whenever feasible, supported by evidence linking meniscal preservation to improved outcomes and reduced osteoarthritis risk. Lateral meniscus posterior root tears

Giant Cell Tumor of the Distal Phalanx of the Great Toe: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm that most commonly involves the epiphyseal-metaphyseal regions of long bones. Involvement of the foot is rare, and occurrence in the distal phalanx of the great toe is exceptionally uncommon. GCTs arising in small bones are known to exhibit more aggressive behavior and higher recurrence rates than those in long bones, posing challenges for management. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a young adult presenting with progressive pain and swelling of the great toe. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging

Can hip extensor strength influence the knee osteoarthritis severity? A cross-sectional analysis.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder characterized by pain, functional impairment, and structural degeneration. While quadriceps and hip abductor weakness are well-established in KOA, the role of hip extensor strength remains underexplored despite its biomechanical importance in lower limb alignment and joint loading. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine whether hip extensor strength differs between asymptomatic individuals and symptomatic KOA patients, and its relationship with pain, function, and radiographic severity. Adults aged 45-70 years ( N = 112; 56

Silk fibroin hydrogel adhesive combined with miR-455 modified framework nucleic acids/ROS-responsive CeO2 nanozymes for meniscus tears reconstruction.

The meniscus, a critical fibrocartilaginous structure in the knee joint that cushions load and stabilizes movement, suffers from poor self-healing potential following tears. This impaired repair not only fails to restore joint function but often progresses to osteoarthritis, posing significant clinical challenges. Regrettably, current therapeutic approaches, such as surgical suturing or partial resection, have limited efficacy in achieving functional regeneration of the meniscus. To address these bottlenecks, we developed a multifunctional composite hydrogel system integrating methacrylated si

Research Progress on Astaxanthin Plus Exercise for the Prevention and Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Traditional Narrative Review.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by inflammatory reactions and bone lesions within the joint, which is mainly caused by the degeneration of articular cartilage. This disease primarily affects middle-aged and elderly populations, especially those over 50 years old; however, a distinct trend of younger onset has been observed in recent years, which is closely associated with factors such as sports-related injuries and obesity. Astaxanthin (AST), a ketone carotenoid belonging to the xanthophyll family, exhibits extremely strong antioxidant and broad-spectrum

Editorial Commentary: Is High Tibial Osteotomy All We Need? No Differences in Patient-Reported Outcomes in Medial Meniscal Posterior Root Tears With Varus Deformity Between Isolated High Tibial Osteotomy and Osteotomy With Meniscal Centralization and All-Inside Root Repair.

Medial meniscus posterior root tears in the setting of varus malalignment present a difficult clinical pathology, often leading to accelerated medial compartment osteoarthritis if untreated. Both meniscal root repair and high tibial osteotomy remain cornerstones of intervention for these patients, effectively redistributing load and improving joint biomechanics. It remains to be seen whether the unloading effect of high tibial osteotomy or restoration of meniscal hoop stress distribution and reduction of medial meniscal extrusion via root repair provides greater benefit. The addition of arthro

A decision tree model for chondral lesion management in the knee based on clinical and mathematical integration.

BACKGROUND: Focal chondral defects of the knee present a complex therapeutic challenge due to the heterogeneous nature of lesion characteristics and patient-specific factors. Despite multiple available treatment modalities, no universally accepted decision-making framework currently exists to guide individualized care. This study proposes and validates a clinically grounded, mathematically structured decision tree algorithm to stratify treatment options based on key anatomical, biomechanical, and demographic parameters. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed to define eviden

Comparison of Knee Function After Reconstruction With Posterolateral Corner Injury and With or Without Posteromedial Corner Injury for Treating Knee Dislocation Cases: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: In the multiple ligament injury of the knee joint, apart from the anterior cruciate ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament, the Posterolateral Corner and the Posteromedial Corner are two structures that are easily overlooked. If not properly identified and repaired in one stage, the knee joint may be unstable, even failure of cruciate ligament reconstruction. The purpose of this article was to evaluate the effect of knee joint recovery after PLC (Posterolateral Corner) with or without PMC (Posteromedial Corner) injury. METHODS: From 2016 to 2020, we screened a total of 2564

Horns, nails, and leaky kidneys: A rare case of congenital nephrotic syndrome.

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is an uncommon autosomal dominant condition marked by nail dysplasia, skeletal abnormalities, and variable renal manifestations, resulting from mutations in the LMX1B gene. We report a rare case of a 23-year-old male presenting with nephrotic-range proteinuria, characteristic skeletal manifestations of NPS, and a family history of renal failure. Genetic testing identified a previously unreported heterozygous missense variant in the homeodomain of LMX1B (c.791A>C; p.Gln264Pro), supporting its pathogenicity. The absence of patellar hypoplasia in our patient highlights
