Policy uptake and implementation of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine in sub-Saharan African countries: status 2 years following the WHO recommendation.

In October 2021, the WHO recommended the world's first malaria vaccine-RTS,S/AS01-to prevent malaria in children living in areas with moderate-to-high transmission in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). A second malaria vaccine, R21/Matrix-M, was recommended for use in October 2023 and added to the WHO list of prequalified vaccines in December 2023. This study analysis assessed the country status of implementation and delivery strategies for RTS,S/AS01 by searching websites for national malaria policies, guidelines and related documents. Direct contact with individuals working in malaria programmes was

Core principles of Malakit intervention for transferability in other contexts.

To eliminate malaria, all populations must be included. For those who are not reached by the health care system, specific interventions must be tailor-made. An innovative Malakit strategy, based on the distribution of self-diagnosis and self-treatment kits, has been evaluated in the Suriname-French Guiana- Amapá (Brazil) region. The results showed effectiveness and good acceptability. The Malakit intervention is complex and has many components. Its transferability requires adaptation to other populations and regions, while retaining the main features of the intervention. This article provides

Characterizing trachoma elimination using serology.

Trachoma is targeted for global elimination as a public health problem by 2030. Measurement of IgG antibodies in children is being considered for surveillance and programmatic decision-making. There are currently no guidelines for applications of serology, which represents a generalizable problem in seroepidemiology and disease elimination. We collated Chlamydia trachomatis Pgp3 and CT694 IgG measurements (63,911 children ages 1-9 years) from 48 serosurveys, including surveys across Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific Islands to estimate population-level seroconversion rates (SCR) along a g

Skin Diseases in Patients With Primary Psychiatric Conditions in Northern India: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between skin diseases and psychiatric illnesses is bi-directional and is manifested as cause and effect. Psychiatric disorders such as stress, anxiety, and depression are seen to be instrumental in the development and progression of dermatological diseases on one hand, while on the other hand, cosmetic disfigurement caused by dermatological diseases is responsible for psychological distress in patients. The present study was conducted to investigate the spectrum of dermatological disorders in psychiatric patients to offer them holistic treatment and provide them wi

Non-malarial febrile illness: a systematic review of published aetiological studies and case reports from China, 1980-2015.

BACKGROUND: Rapid point-of-care tests for malaria are now widely used in many countries to guide the initial clinical management of patients presenting with febrile illness. With China having recently achieved malaria elimination, better understanding regarding the identity and distribution of major non-malarial causes of febrile illnesses is of particular importance to inform evidence-based empirical treatment policy. METHODS: A systematic review of published literature was undertaken to characterise the spectrum of pathogens causing non-malaria febrile illness in China (1980-2015). Literatu

Invasion Genetics of the Horse-Chestnut Leaf Miner, Cameraria ohridella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), in European Russia: A Case of Successful Involvement of Citizen Science in Studying an Alien Insect Pest.

Based on the intensive monitoring conducted by our team and volunteers in 2021, the secondary range of an alien horse-chestnut leaf miner, Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimić, 1986 (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), was specified in European Russia. This invasive pest was confirmed in 24 out of 58 administrative regions of Russia, which it has occupied for approximately 16 years. Analysis of the COI mtDNA gene sequenced in 201 specimens collected in 21 regions of the European part of Russia indicates the occurrence of two haplotypes (A and B), which are also present in the secondary range of C. oh

The Tubulin Superfamily in Apicomplexan Parasites.

Microtubules and specialized microtubule-containing structures are assembled from tubulins, an ancient superfamily of essential eukaryotic proteins. Here, we use bioinformatic approaches to analyze features of tubulins in organisms from the phylum Apicomplexa. Apicomplexans are protozoan parasites that cause a variety of human and animal infectious diseases. Individual species harbor one to four genes each for α- and β-tubulin isotypes. These may specify highly similar proteins, suggesting functional redundancy, or exhibit key differences, consistent with specialized roles. Some, but not all a

Toxoplasma gondii attenuates the ethidium bromide induced demyelination lesions in multiple sclerosis model rats.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune neurodegenerative disease. Since the modulation of the immune system by parasites has been proven, and there have been reports of a reduction in the clinical symptoms of MS in people with toxoplasmosis, this study aimed to investigate the effect of toxoplasmosis on MS in an animal model. MS model was induced by the ethidium bromide injection in the areas specified in the Rat's brain in the stereotaxic device and Toxoplasma gondii RH strain injection of the rat's peritoneal for creation of toxoplasmosis. The effect of acute and chronic toxoplasmosis on t

Target product profile: Trypanosoma brucei gambiense test to verify elimination.

Human African trypanosomiasis is a life-threatening parasitic infection transmitted by the tsetse fly in sub-Saharan Africa. The most common form is caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, with humans as the main reservoir. Diagnosis in the field requires microscopic examination performed by specifically trained personnel. After over two decades of sustained efforts, the incidence of the disease is strongly declining, and some historically endemic countries are no longer detecting cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has targeted the elimination of transmission of gambiense human African

Topical repellents for malaria prevention.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-based interventions, such as long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), remain the backbone of malaria vector control. These interventions target mosquitoes that prefer to feed and rest indoors, but have limited capacity to prevent transmission that occurs outdoors or outside regular sleeping hours. In low-endemicity areas, malaria elimination will require that these control gaps are addressed, and complementary tools are found. The use of topical repellents may be particularly useful for populations who may not benefit from progra

Prevalence of African animal trypanosomiasis among livestock and domestic animals in Uganda: a systematic review and meta-regression analysis from 1980 to 2022.

African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) is one of the major constraints to animal health and production in sub-Saharan Africa. To inform AAT control in Uganda and help advance along the progressive control pathway (PCP), we characterized AAT prevalence among eight host species in Uganda and explored factors that influence the prevalence variation between studies. We retrieved AAT prevalence publications (n = 2232) for Uganda (1980-2022) from five life sciences databases, focusing on studies specifying AAT detection methods, sample size, and the number of trypanosome-positive animals. Malaria Vector Surveillance and Control in an Elimination Setting in South Africa.

South Africa's malaria elimination plans are aligned to the World Health Organization's aim for a malaria-free world and include specific objectives within a specified time frame. These are proving difficult to achieve owing to the sporadic nature of locally acquired malaria in some affected districts, while other districts that were endemic for the disease are either malaria-free or very close to that goal. The WHO also specifies that continued measures to prevent the re-establishment of transmission are required in areas where elimination has been achieved. These measures include routine mal

Pyrazole based Furanone Hybrids as Novel Antimalarial: A Combined Experimental, Pharmacological and Computational Study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria parasite strains are resistant to the therapeutic effect of prophylactics medicines presently available. This resistance now poses a significant challenge to researchers to beat malaria parasitic infections. Strategies such as investigating newer hybrid chemical entities and specified drug targets may help us spot new efficient derivatives that bind to the parasites in a more specific manner and inhibit their growth. OBJECTIVE: To scientifically perform the experimental, pharmacological, and computational studies of pyrazole-based furanone hybrids as novel antimalarial age

Leveraging mathematical models of disease dynamics and machine learning to improve development of novel malaria interventions.

BACKGROUND: Substantial research is underway to develop next-generation interventions that address current malaria control challenges. As there is limited testing in their early development, it is difficult to predefine intervention properties such as efficacy that achieve target health goals, and therefore challenging to prioritize selection of novel candidate interventions. Here, we present a quantitative approach to guide intervention development using mathematical models of malaria dynamics coupled with machine learning. Our analysis identifies requirements of efficacy, coverage, and durat

Assessing the relationship between gravidity and placental malaria among pregnant women in a high transmission area in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Malaria infection during pregnancy can cause significant morbidity and mortality to a pregnant woman, her fetus and newborn. In areas of high endemic transmission, gravidity is an important risk factor for infection, but there is a complex relationship with other exposure-related factors, and use of protective measures. This study investigated the association between gravidity and placental malaria (PM), among pregnant women aged 14-49 in Kintampo, a high transmission area of Ghana. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2011, as part of a study investigating the association between PM and mal

Homology Modeling, Molecular Docking, Molecular Dynamic Simulation, and Drug-Likeness of the Modified Alpha-Mangostin against the β-Tubulin Protein of Acanthamoeba Keratitis.

Acanthamoeba species are capable of causing amoebic keratitis (AK). As a monotherapy, alpha-mangostin is effective for the treatment of AK; however, its bioavailability is quite poor. Moreover, the efficacy of therapy is contingent on the parasite and virulent strains. To improve readiness against AK, it is necessary to find other derivatives with accurate target identification. Beta-tubulin (BT) has been used as a target for anti-Acanthamoeba (A. keratitis). In this work, therefore, a model of the BT protein of A. keratitis was constructed by homology modeling utilizing the amino acid sequenc

Clinical aspects of malarial retinopathy: a critical review.

This review will provide a better understanding of a set of signs known as malarial retinopathy. The discovery of this retinopathy in association with cerebral malaria is important because it best distinguishes patients with true cerebral malaria from those with coma due to other causes and incidental Plasmodium falciparum parasitemia. Identifying a comatose patient with malarial retinopathy increases the likelihood of an accurate severe or cerebral malaria diagnosis. As the World Health Organization does not specify that malarial retinopathy is one of the factors included in determining a cer
