Human echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by accidental ingestion of tapeworm eggs of the genus Echinococcus, shed in the feces of animal definitive host. In the human duodenum, these eggs release oncospheres, which penetrate the intestinal wall and via the bloodstream reach the liver-the most common site for development of cysts. However, it is important to remember that any other organ can be affected via the bloodstream, due to larvae size. In Europe, the most diagnostically relevant species are Echinococcus granulosus, with a median incidence of 0.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a

BACKGROUND: Azacitidine is used to treat myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It acts as a cytosine analog and DNA methyltransferase inhibitor, inducing DNA hypomethylation to reverse epigenetic modifications and restore normal gene expression. However, adverse events (AEs) associated with azacitidine are mainly reported in clinical trials, with limited real-world evidence. This study aims to assess the AE profile of azacitidine by utilizing data from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and WHO-VigiAccess databases.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The Yi people in the Xiaoliangshan region in southwest China have a unique practice of combining ritual treatment and traditional medicine to care for patients. Despite increasing urbanization in the area, they have managed to preserve their distinctive lifestyle and extensive knowledge of traditional medicinal plants, setting them apart from other regions. However, there is a lack of systematic documentation on the knowledge of traditional medicinal plants used by the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This research aims to achieve the following obj

MSMR publishes annual updates on the incidence of malaria among U.S. service members. Malaria infection remains a potential health threat to U.S. service members located in or near endemic areas due to duty assignment, participation in contingency operations, or personal travel. In 2023, a total of 39 active and reserve component service members were diagnosed with or reported to have malaria, an 8.3% increase from the 36 cases identified in 2022. Over half of the malaria cases in 2023 were caused by Plasmodium falciparum (53.8%; n=21) followed by unspecified types of malaria (35.9%; n=14) and

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance against artemisinin-based combination therapy has threatened malaria control efforts. Since malaria control and elimination plans are dependent on these drugs, they must remain efficacious. However, resistance to these drugs was detected in low-transmission settings and is predicted to emerge in high-transmission settings, including in unspecified areas of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the therapeutic efficacy and safety of artemether-lumefantrine for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria.

UNLABELLED: Leishmaniasis is a rare disease in the United States, with an estimated annual incidence of dozens of cases occurring primarily in travelers, migrants, and military personnel. True disease incidence is unknown, since leishmaniasis is not a nationally notifiable condition. Here, we describe the results of molecular leishmaniasis over a 1-year interval (September 2021 to August 2022) when our laboratory served as the primary national reference laboratory for molecular diagnosis of civilian leishmaniasis. We tested 218 specimens submitted from 36 states yielding 94 of the 186 (50.5%)

BACKGROUND: Capecitabine, a prodrug of 5-fluorouracil, is extensively utilized for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and gastric cancer. Nevertheless, there exist limitations in comprehending adverse reactions (AEs) in clinical practice. In this study, we investigated the distribution of AEs associated with capecitabine and explored potential rare adverse reactions by mining the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).
OBJECTIVES: Our research aimed to explore the spectrum of AEs associated with capecitabine, including both documented an

BACKGROUND: Oncolytic virus therapy is a rapidly evolving emerging approach for the medical management of cancer. Talimogene laherparepvec (T-VEC) is the first and only Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved oncolytic virus therapy. Considering that exactly how T-VEC works is not known, there is a strong need for a comprehensive pharmacovigilance study to identify safety signals of potential risks with T-VEC.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the risk of adverse events (AEs) related to T-VEC.
METHODS: We implemented a pharmacovigilance study utilizing individual case

Malaria infection remains an important health threat to U.S. service members who are located in endemic areas because of long-term duty assignments, participation in shorter-term contingency operations, or personal travel. In 2021, a total of 20 service members were diagnosed with or reported to have malaria. This was the lowest number of annual cases during the 10-year surveillance period (i.e., January 2012-December 2021) and represents a 28.6% decrease from the 28 cases identified in 2020. The relatively low numbers of cases during 2012-2021 mainly reflect decreases in cases acquired in Afg

BACKGROUND: Immunological treatments (immune checkpoint inhibitors [ICIs], chimeric antigen receptor T [CAR-T] cells, bispecific T-cell engagers [BiTEs]) have deeply changed the treatment of several cancers. However, the impact of these treatments on the risk of developing infections has not been completely ascertained yet.
METHODS: We reviewed all the registration studies of currently approved ICIs, CAR-T cells, and BiTEs to collect all the reported infections. For each drug, we have generated a report with the infections occurring in at least 10% of the patients enrolled.
RESULTS: The most

A growing body of research implicates inflammation as a potential pathway in the aetiology and pathophysiology of some mental illnesses. A systematic review was conducted to determine the association between parasitic infection and mental illnesses in humans in Africa and reviewed the state of the evidence available. The search focused on publications from Africa documenting the relationship between parasites from two parasite groups, helminths and protozoans, and four classifications of mental illness: mood affective disorders, neurotic and stress-related disorders, schizotypal disorders and
