Malaria among members of the U.S. Armed Forces, 2023.

MSMR publishes annual updates on the incidence of malaria among U.S. service members. Malaria infection remains a potential health threat to U.S. service members located in or near endemic areas due to duty assignment, participation in contingency operations, or personal travel. In 2023, a total of 39 active and reserve component service members were diagnosed with or reported to have malaria, an 8.3% increase from the 36 cases identified in 2022. Over half of the malaria cases in 2023 were caused by Plasmodium falciparum (53.8%; n=21) followed by unspecified types of malaria (35.9%; n=14) and

Therapeutic efficacy and safety of artemether-lumefantrine combination therapy for the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria at Teda Health Centre, Northwest Ethiopia, 2022/23.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance against artemisinin-based combination therapy has threatened malaria control efforts. Since malaria control and elimination plans are dependent on these drugs, they must remain efficacious. However, resistance to these drugs was detected in low-transmission settings and is predicted to emerge in high-transmission settings, including in unspecified areas of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the therapeutic efficacy and safety of artemether-lumefantrine for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria. METH

Descriptive and molecular epidemiology of leishmaniasis diagnosed from clinical samples in the United States, 2021-2022.

UNLABELLED: Leishmaniasis is a rare disease in the United States, with an estimated annual incidence of dozens of cases occurring primarily in travelers, migrants, and military personnel. True disease incidence is unknown, since leishmaniasis is not a nationally notifiable condition. Here, we describe the results of molecular leishmaniasis over a 1-year interval (September 2021 to August 2022) when our laboratory served as the primary national reference laboratory for molecular diagnosis of civilian leishmaniasis. We tested 218 specimens submitted from 36 states yielding 94 of the 186 (50.5%)

The changing epidemiology of human leishmaniasis in the non-endemic country of Austria between 2000 to 2021, including a congenital case.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is caused by infection with intracellular protozoans of the genus Leishmania. Transmission occurs predominantly by the bite of phlebotomine sandflies, other routes, including congenital transmission, are rare. The disease manifests as either cutaneous, visceral or mucosal/mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. In recent years, changes in the epidemiological pattern have been reported from Europe. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 311 new and 29 published leishmaniasis cases occurring between 01/01/2000 and 12/31/2021 in Austria were collected and analyzed. These encompassed 146 c

Impact of parasitic infection on mental health and illness in humans in Africa: a systematic review.

A growing body of research implicates inflammation as a potential pathway in the aetiology and pathophysiology of some mental illnesses. A systematic review was conducted to determine the association between parasitic infection and mental illnesses in humans in Africa and reviewed the state of the evidence available. The search focused on publications from Africa documenting the relationship between parasites from two parasite groups, helminths and protozoans, and four classifications of mental illness: mood affective disorders, neurotic and stress-related disorders, schizotypal disorders and

Wound Management Strategy for Treatment of Localized Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Using the TIME Framework.

INTRODUCTION: The current drugs available for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) often cause several adverse events, and the risk-benefit ratio is low due to the risk of severe complications. Current treatment recommendations are based on data from areas endemic for leishmaniasis and are not always perfectly applicable, especially in cases of imported CL. Thus, it is crucial to assess the level of severity in each case to provide the most appropriate treatment modality. The World Health Organization recommends simple wound care (with unspecified strategies) or local therapy as first

Interleukin-11 receptor expression on monocytes is dispensable for their recruitment and pathogen uptake during Leishmania major infection.

Interleukin-11 (IL-11) is an important member of the IL-6 family of cytokines. IL-11 activates its target cells via binding to a non-signaling α-receptor (IL-11R), which results in recruitment and activation of a gp130 homodimer. The cytokine was initially described as an anti-inflammatory protein, but has recently gained attention as a potent driver in certain types of cancer and different fibrotic conditions. Leishmania spp. are a group of eukaryotic parasites that cause the disease leishmaniasis. They infect phagocytes of their hosts, especially monocytes recruited to the site of infection,
