Increased contralateral dynamic valgus in female athletes following ACL reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Female athletes have a higher risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which has been associated with neuromuscular deficits and dynamic valgus, while contralateral risk profiles after ACL reconstruction remain insufficiently characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether female patients after ACL reconstruction exhibit greater contralateral valgus angles compared with male patients, indicating a higher risk profile for secondary ACL injury. It was hypothesized that dynamic valgus would be more pronounced in women than in men. METHODS: In this predefined

Pain Sensitivity, Psychological Factors, and Muscle Function in Male Athletes With Long-Standing Groin Pain and Matched Controls.

Long-standing groin pain in athletes is often managed as a localized musculoskeletal tissue injury. Treatment-resistant symptoms and disability after return to sport suggest that other factors may also contribute. This study compared pain sensitivity, psychological factors, and muscle function between male athletes with long-standing groin pain (N = 20) and sex-, age-, and sports-matched controls (N = 20). Pressure-pain thresholds were assessed with a handheld algometer at the adductor longus muscle and origin, iliopsoas tendon, pubic bone, pubic symphysis, gluteus maximus muscle, and elbow. P

Long-term Outcomes of Partial Proximal Hamstring Avulsion Repair: Mean 10-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Operative repair of partial proximal hamstring avulsions has been shown to improve pain and function at short- and midterm follow-up. Long-term outcomes have not yet been reported. Furthermore, it is unknown whether greater tendon involvement (ie, tendon number) in partial tears affects clinical outcomes. HYPOTHESIS: Hamstring function and patient satisfaction would remain stable over time at minimum 5-year and mean 10-year follow-up, with no differences in outcomes when comparing isolated and combined tendon involvement. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS:

Evaluation of Clinical Tests to Diagnose Iliopsoas Tendinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing iliopsoas tendinopathy is challenging because of nonspecific pain patterns and clinical signs overlapping with those of other hip conditions. Although peritendinous anesthetic injections provide the best diagnostic accuracy, they are invasive and resource intensive. Conventional clinical tests largely focus on hip flexion, potentially overlooking the diagnostic contribution of the muscle's secondary function-external rotation. A newly described hip-external rotation-flexion-ceiling (HEC) test combines the primary function (hip flexion) with the secondary function (extern

Muscle composition is not a prognostic factor for muscle strength recovery after anterior cruciate ligament surgery by hamstring tendon autograft.

PURPOSE: For the athlete, anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture and its surgical management are often a turning point in their career. Success and time to return to sport are essential parameters for athletes and their support staff, so it is critical to understand the prognostic factors influencing return to sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The aim of this study was to determine the influence of hamstring muscle composition on muscle power following ACLR with autogenous hamstring grafts. METHODS: 24 patients with chronic torn ACL were included at a single-cent

Primary Repair of Complete Quadriceps Tendon Rupture with Extensor Mechanism Deficit.

BACKGROUND: Whereas partial quadriceps tendon ruptures may be treated nonoperatively if the extensor mechanism remains functional, complete ruptures require primary operative repair to achieve optimal functional results1,2. The 2 most common techniques are the use of transosseous tunnels and the use of suture anchors. The goal of these procedures is to reconstruct and restore mobility of the extensor mechanism of the leg. DESCRIPTION: The patient is positioned supine with the injured leg exposed. A midline incision to the knee is made over the quadriceps tendon defect, exposing the distal qua

Evaluation of Results of Primary Repair of Open Tendo-Achilles Injury in the Department of Casualty, MMCH, Bangladesh.

Achilles tendon injury has been increasing over recent years due to a variety of causes. The injury of the Achilles tendon is a disabling condition, which is difficult to treat if there is a gap or defect between the two ends of the disrupted tendon. Patients with a rupture of the Achilles tendon should be operated without delay. Most of the people in our country use flat pan in the latrine, which are at a same level of the toilet floor. Surface of the toilet pan breaks down and cause sharp cut. Some of the cases of open tendon injuries occur due to road traffic accident, cut by broken glass a

London International Consensus and Delphi study on hamstring injuries part 2: operative management.

The key indications for surgical repair of hamstring injuries (HSIs) remain unclear in the literature due to a lack of high-level evidence and expert knowledge. The 2020 London International Hamstring Consensus meeting aimed to highlight clear surgical indications and to create a foundation for future research. A literature review was conducted followed by a modified Delphi process, with an international expert panel. Purposive sampling was used with two rounds of online questionnaires and an intermediate round involving a consensus meeting. The initial information gathering (round 1) question

Postoperative quadriceps weakness and male sex are risk factors for patellofemoral articular cartilage lesions after anatomical anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Patellofemoral (PF) compartment cartilage lesions are a frequent problem after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This study aimed to determine the factors that influence PF cartilage lesions after anatomical ACL reconstruction. METHODS: This study enrolled a total of 114 patients who did not manifest PF compartment cartilage lesions during anatomical ACL reconstruction and underwent second-look arthroscopy 18 months postoperatively. Arthroscopy using the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) classification was used to assess cartilage lesions. The correlation b

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Minimally Invasive Achilles Tendon Reconstruction with Hamstring Graft Indicates Satisfactory Long-Term Outcomes.

Background and objectives: The Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body, is vulnerable to injury because of its limited blood supply and the combination of forces to which it is subjected. Given the relevance of the Achilles tendon in the proper function of the foot and ankle, the primary goal of the present study was to use a holistic approach for a comprehensive evaluation of Achilles tendon reconstruction results on multiple levels. Materials and Methods: The study was designed in the following way: 30 patients with partial or total Achilles tendon tears were subjected to the minimal

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament Can Become Hypertrophied in Response to Mechanical Loading: A Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study in Elite Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Evidence, mainly from animal models, suggests that exercise during periods of pubertal growth can produce a hypertrophied anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and improve its mechanical properties. In humans, the only evidence of ACL hypertrophy comes from a small cross-sectional study of elite weight lifters and control participants; that study had methodological weaknesses and, thus, more evidence is needed. PURPOSE: To investigate bilateral differences in the ACL cross-sectional area (CSA) for evidence of unilateral hypertrophy in athletes who have habitually loaded 1 leg more than

Evidence that ageing does not influence the uniformity of the muscle-tendon unit adaptation in master sprinters.

Differences in the adaptation processes between muscle and tendon in response to mechanical loading can lead to non-uniform mechanical properties within the muscle-tendon unit (MTU), potentially increasing injury risk. The current study analysed the mechanical properties of the triceps surae (TS) MTU in 10 young (YS; 22 ± 3 yrs) and 10 older (OS; age 65 ± 8 yrs; i.e. master) (inter)national level sprinters and 11 young recreationally active adults (YC; 23 ± 3 yrs) to detect possible non-uniformities in muscle and tendon adaptation due to habitual mechanical loading and ageing. Reduction in post-spinal cord injury spasticity by combination of peripheral nerve grafting and acidic fibroblast growth factor infusion in monkeys.

OBJECTIVE: Spasticity is a frequent complication after spinal cord injury (SCI), but the existing therapies provide only limited relief and are associated with adverse reactions. Therefore, we aimed to develop a novel strategy to ameliorate the spasticity induced by SCI. METHODS: This nonrandomized controlled study used a repeated measurement design. The study involved four monkeys, two of which served as controls and only underwent spinal cord hemisection surgery at the T8 spine level. The other two monkeys underwent transplantation of sural nerve segments into the injured sites and long-ter
