INTRODUCTION: Sportsman (sports) hernia is a medially located bulge in the posterior wall of the inguinal canal that is common in football players. About 90% of cases occur in males. The injury is also found in the general population.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The presenting symptom is chronic groin pain which develops during exercise, aggravated by sudden movements, accompanied by subtle physical examination findings and a medial inguinal bulge on ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: To explore the operative technique of repair and its curative effect of old rupture of the Achilles tendon with flexor digitorum (hallucis)longus tendon transfer.
METHODS: From Nov 2001 to May 2005, 13 patients who had old rupture of the Achilles tendon were treated with this operative technique. Five of them were treated with flexor digitorum longus tendon transfer and 8 with flexor hallucis longus tendon. All patients had the history of closed injury of Achilles tendon(9 male and 4 female, 8 left feet and 5 right feet). The age ranged from 32 to 69 years(mean 41 years).

OBJECTIVES: To describe calf muscle endurance recovery and to explore factors predictive of poor calf muscle endurance recovery 1 year after surgical repair of an Achilles tendon rupture (ATR).
BACKGROUND: ATR is a common sports-related injury and is often managed with open surgical repair. After ATR repair most patients return to usual activities 6 months after surgery. In this study a mechanical analysis was made of the landing phase of three trained heel-toe runners, running at their preferred speed and style. This study reports the histochemical fiber type composition of the human hamstring muscles. Muscle specimens from necropsy specimens were obtained from seven locations in the hamstring, four locations in the quadriceps, and one location in the adductor magnus. The hamstring muscles are shown to have a relatively high proportion of Type II fibers.
