Evaluation of four chimeric Trypanosoma cruzi recombinant antigens for serological diagnosis of chronic Chagas disease in dogs: a phase II study.

BACKGROUND: Dogs are recognized as epidemiologically significant reservoirs for Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease (CD), owing to their close association with humans and their role in sustaining the domestic and peridomestic transmission cycle. Canine seropositivity often correlates with human CD prevalence. However, the lack of commercial, high-performance diagnostic assays for canine infections remains a significant barrier to effective surveillance. Previously, our group demonstrated the diagnostic potential of four chimeric T. cruzi antigens in a phase I study, yieldi

Primary ovarian parasitic diseases mimicking ovarian cancer in the reproductive system: diagnostic challenges and surgical challenges (a case report).

Primary ovarian parasitic disease is rare and can masquerade as advanced ovarian carcinoma; we report the first detailed case in a post-menopausal woman that underscores this diagnostic trap. A 51-year-old woman with chronic raw-seafood ingestion presented with bilateral adnexal masses (7cm left, 5cm right), low-grade fever, leukocytosis (13.2 × 109/L), markedly elevated C-reactive protein (135mg/L) and CA-125 (69.5U/mL), and imaging suggesting ovarian malignancy with ascites. Intra-operatively, a "frozen pelvis" with dense adhesions, multiple abscesses and omental cake was found; frozen secti

Two Plasmodium vivax hypnozoite-expressed RNA-binding proteins inhibit liver stage replication.

Plasmodium vivax (Pv) forms non-replicating liver stages called hypnozoites, which activate after primary infection, and cause relapses of symptomatic blood-stage malaria. We hypothesized that hypnozoites must actively suppress schizogony to maintain a quiescent state. Differential transcriptome prospecting idenfied two hypnozoite-expressed transcripts encoding putative RNA-binding proteins. We assessed the functional role of the two encoded proteins in Plasmodium yoelii (Py), a rodent malaria parasite that naturally does not form hypnozoites. Strikingly, individual expression of each protein

Recurrent Spinal Hydatid Cyst: A Histopathologic Case Report.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection that primarily affects the liver and lungs, but spinal involvement is very rare. We report a case of recurrent primary vertebral and paravertebral hydatid cysts and discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with this condition. A 48-year-old woman with a history of spinal hydatidosis resection involving the T2 to T7 and T11 to the distal lumbar spine 8 years earlier presented with mid-back pain and intermittent fever. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed two masses, measuring 21 mm and 22 mm, located at the anterolateral border of

Spinal Hydatidosis in the Lumbar Region: An Unusual Presentation of Echinococcosis.

Spinal hydatidosis is a rare and often overlooked manifestation of echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus. We present the case of a 35-year-old female patient from a rural area who presented with progressive lower back pain and heaviness in the lower limbs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiloculated cystic lesions at the L3 and L4 vertebrae, suggestive of hydatid disease. The patient underwent surgical excision of the cysts and spinal stabilization, along with albendazole therapy administered pre- and postoperatively. The parasitological examination of the surgical spec

Blood Eosinophil Counts in Healthy Volunteers and in Patients with Asthma and COPD in India: A Multi-Centre Cross-Sectional Report.

BACKGROUND: Blood eosinophils have become an invaluable tool in the assessment, management, and prognostication of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Historically, the understanding and application of blood eosinophil counts (BEC) have been primarily based on data from high-income countries, with limited information available from developing regions, including the Indian subcontinent. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aims to assess the distribution and clinical relevance of BEC among patients with asthma and COPD as well as healthy volunteers across India, to

Infection with gut parasites correlates with gut microbiome diversity across human populations in Africa.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are common in (sub)tropical regions and primarily affect impoverished populations. These parasites reside in the gut, where they interact with both the microbiota and host immunity. Clinical STH detection is laborious and often not performed within the context of gut microbiome studies. Here, we present a proof-of-concept study assessing whether fecal metagenome data could be used to assess STH infection, and to relate STH infection to microbiome features. We leveraged 310 gut metagenomes obtained from mother-child pairs in two different locations in Gabon: one

Incorporating a human parasite virtual reality experience into a tertiary microbiology teaching curriculum increases student engagement and learning outcomes.

Microbiology, the study of microorganisms, is of critical importance to a variety of fields, including medicine, nursing, genetics, and immunology, as well as to students training to enter those fields. By definition, the objects of microbiology are too small to be seen with the naked eye, so its practitioners are well accustomed to using technology to make the invisible visible. From this perspective, virtual reality (VR) is a natural evolution from the microscope and the petri dish. We have conceptualized, designed, and tested a new virtual reality environment to teach undergraduate students

Review of Genetic Information of Morphologically Described Haemoproteus Parasites Recorded in GenBank and MalAvi Databases.

Haemoproteus Kruse, 1890 (Haemosporida: Haemoproteiidae) parasites are known for their high genetic diversity, avian host-specificity, and wide geographical distribution. Currently, 2019 lineages are registered as Haemoproteus species, but only 160 of them have been linked to morphospecies. Two main open access and independent databases are used to compile genetic, geographical, and host information on Haemoproteus parasites: GenBank and MalAvi. However, the data registered are not integrated, representing an obstacle in investigating Haemoproteus parasites. Here, we review all reported avian

New tools to uncover old tricks: an update on the knowledge on the most successful invasive freshwater helminth, Schyzocotyle acheilognathi.

The Asian fish tapeworm (AFT), Schyzocotyle acheilognathi, is a highly invasive and pathogenic parasite of freshwater fishes, present on all continents except Antarctica. Globally, 310 + definitive fish host species have been recorded, with Mexico showing the highest number of reports. Here, we summarize the current knowledge about the biology, distribution, and ecological determinants of this parasite, highlighting key knowledge gaps that could guide future research. Considering Mexico has quite comprehensive records of this parasite (both in host and geographical terms), we propose that this

A long-term serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii in European bison (Bison bonasus) - the largest european herbivore.

Zoonotic parasites are among the most prevalent agents that impair health and form networks of interdependencies between wildlife, domestic animals, and human populations. Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that causes one of the most common zoonotic diseases worldwide - toxoplasmosis. It can be transmitted horizontally through contaminated food or water, or vertically through the placenta. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence and distribution of T. gondii seropositivity using an in-house ELISA in free-living and captive European bison from two populations in north-eastern Poland.

Exploring the immune responses triggered by vaccine formulations containing the recombinant Schistosoma mansoni 14kDa fatty acid-binding protein.

Many different Schistosoma antigens have been evaluated as vaccine candidates, including the recombinant form of the Schistosoma mansoni 14-kDa fatty acid-binding protein (rSm14). However, recombinant proteins often lack intrinsic immunostimulatory activity, a limitation that can be addressed by using vaccine formulations that contain adjuvants. In this work, we describe the immune response triggered by rSm14, a vaccine candidate against schistosomiasis currently under clinical trial, formulated with either (i) Monophosphoryl Lipid A (MPLA), (ii) MPLA/Alum, or (iii) Freund's adjuvant. rSm14/MP

Rhodnius prolixus impairs Trypanosoma cruzi growth through cold-seeking behavioral thermoregulation.

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a major neglected tropical disease affecting 6-7 million people worldwide. Rhodnius prolixus, one of the most important vectors of Chagas disease in Latin America, is known to be highly sensitive to environmental temperature, which influences both its biology and parasite development. However, few studies have investigated how this vector behaviorally modulates the effects of temperature by shifting their thermopreference, particularly in response to infection. We investigated how T. cruzi infection of R. prolixus fourth-instar nymph

Co-infections of Schistosoma mansoni and Helicobacter pylori in school-aged populations and implication for management and control practices in Niger State, Nigeria.

Helicobacter pylori and Schistosoma mansoni are two important pathogens that infect the gastrointestinal tract, could be acquired earlier in childhood, and can remain asymptomatic for a long period. While S. mansoni is been controlled within routine primary healthcare program, there are no control guidelines for H. pylori. Here, we investigate the co-infection pattern of both pathogens to support improvement of management strategies. Fresh stool samples were obtained from 299 school-aged children between ages 6-17 years and analyzed using real-time and conventional polymerase chain reaction (P

Proteomic profiles of Lissachatina (Heterobranchia) and Pomacea (Caenogastropoda) snails infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis using 4D label-free quantitative analysis.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the causative agent of human eosinophilic meningitis, utilizes terrestrial and freshwater gastropods as intermediate hosts. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these host-parasite interactions remain unclear. We applied four-dimensional label-free quantitative (4D-LFQ) proteomics to examine proteomic alterations in infected versus uninfected specimens of two intermediate snail hosts, Lissachatina fulica and Pomacea canaliculata. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gen

In silico investigation of novel Plasmodium Falciparum glycogen synthase kinase (pfGSk3β) inhibitors for the treatment of malaria infection.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Malaria, a parasitic disease, remains a major global health concern, with over 260 million cases reported worldwide in 2023. As resistance to current antimalarial drugs increases, the demand for ongoing research into new therapeutic targets and strategies grows. Glycogen synthase kinase (pfGSK3β) is a crucial enzyme involved in metabolic processes of the malaria parasite. In this research, an in silico study was conducted to explore this enzyme as a potential target for drug repurposing. A Python program was used to mine and extract data from the CHEMBL database, which yielded 53 potential GSK

Aspartic protease 2 from Trichinella spiralis excretion/secretion products hydrolyzes tight junctions of intestinal epithelial cells.

Trichinella spiralis is a globally distributed foodborne parasitic nematode causing zoonotic infections. The invasion and subsequent development of intestinal infective larvae within the intestinal mucosa are critical steps in T. spiralis infection of the host. Previous studies have demonstrated that aspartic protease 2 from Trichinella spiralis excretion/secretion products (TsASP2) plays a role in facilitating the invasion of host intestinal epithelial cells by the larvae; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Studies have suggested that dysfunction of the intestinal barrier crea
