BACKGROUND: This study aimed to synthesize evidence on the relative effectiveness of antimalarial drugs used as chemoprevention of malaria in pregnancy (MIP) using network meta-analysis (NMA).
METHODS: Searches for eligible studies were made in multiple electronic databases, including PubMed. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that studied chemoprevention as intermittent preventive treatment of malaria during pregnancy (IPTp) compared to placebo or to another active antimalarial drug were included. A pair-wise as well as an NMA were performed for each comparison. The certainty of evidence wa

Myiasis is the infestation of humans and other warm-blooded animals with dipterous larvae. In the current study, a total of 40 maggots were collected from the cutaneous lesions of the Chinese Milu (Elaphurus davidianus) in China. Based on morphological identification, the third-instar larvae were classified as Chrysomya bezziana. To accurately identify this species, genomic DNA from the larvae was analyzed using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The findings indicated that the examined larvae were unequivocally consistent with the Old World screwworm fly, C. bezziana

OBJECTIVES: Parasitic colitis is highly prevalent worldwide, may mimic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and is encountered by non-specialist physicians in high-income, non-endemic settings. In this context, patients may be at risk of misdiagnosis and poor outcomes. However, cases are not routinely reported, limiting the evidence base to individual case reports. We aimed to systematically describe and evaluate the diagnosis, clinical course and outcomes of affected patients whose cases have been reported in high-income settings.
DESIGN: A systematic review of the literature using the Preferred

Ostertagia ostertagi is a highly prevalent nematode that affects grazing cattle and impacts performance and welfare by reducing appetite and hindering weight gain. Despite its economic significance, the influence of the abomasal parasite O. ostertagi on the rumen microbiome remains unexplored. We examined the effects of subclinical O. ostertagi infection and vaccination on the rumen microbiome at taxonomic and functional levels. In an experimental trial, calves treated with vaccine or adjuvant-only were orally challenged with O. ostertagi larvae daily for 25 days; 4 groups of animals (UNF: unv

The increasing prevalence of gastrointestinal infections caused by Cryptosporidium parvum and Schistosoma mansoni, coupled with the lack of definitive treatments, underscores the need for vaccine development to prevent infection-related cancers. Using experimentally validated epitopes for vaccine development enhances confidence in inducing strong and durable immune responses compared to predicted epitopes, which require lab validation. In this study, we employed a unique computational strategy using 197 experimentally validated epitopes of C. parvum and S. mansoni obtained from the IEDB databa

BACKGROUND: Climate change is expected to reshape malaria transmission dynamics in tropical and subtropical regions. Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI), a proposed solar geoengineering strategy to reduce global warming, could have unintended consequences for vector-borne diseases such as malaria. This study investigates how SAI, through the Stratospheric Aerosol Geoengineering Large Ensemble (GLENS-SAI) scenario, could alter malaria transmission patterns across seven South Asian countries-Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Iran, India, Nepal, and Pakistan-compared with an unmitigated warming

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission, characterized by spatial and temporal heterogeneity and complex vector behaviours, persists in Kenya's highlands despite widespread use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The role of human activity in exposure risk remains underexplored. Identifying vulnerable times and locations is crucial for designing and optimizing targeted control strategies that address the intricate interplay between human activity and local vector behaviour that results in transmission. This study examined human-mosquito interactions in three different ecological settings in Na

BACKGROUND: Herbal medicine remains central to primary healthcare in Ghana due to its accessibility and perceived safety. NTD-O2 is an aqueous herbal formulation derived from Xylopia aethiopica fruits and Bambusa vulgaris leaves, traditionally used for managing onchocerciasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD) endemic to the country. This study evaluated the antionchocercal activity of NTD-O2 and assessed isolated compounds from the formulation and its source plants for activity against animal African trypanosomiasis, another prevalent NTD.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, caused by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, is commonly reported in Ethiopia. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends treating P. vivax malaria with a schizonticidal drug and a 14-day course of primaquine (0.25-0.5 mg/kg body weight daily) to prevent relapses. In 2018, Ethiopia adopted a policy of primaquine radical cure (0.25 mg/kg for 14 days), with close monitoring for adverse events, but without prior glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) testing. This study aimed to assess the safety of this policy by monitoring the risk of haemolysis and other adv

Concomitant immunity (CI) can be viewed as an example of coevolution between the microorganisms and their long-lived hosts. Such an ecological trade-off may be advantageous to both the microbe and the host, as it allows protozoa and helminths to maintain their genetic features while providing the host, particularly mammals, with long-standing protection against reinfection by the same microbe. In Leishmania infection, CI is the mechanism whereby parasites remain at low-level infection in the host, which develops a strong immune reaction that protects against reinfection. Mechanistically, sever

Helminth parasites are complex metazoans belonging to diverse taxonomic families, each exhibiting distinct host tissue tropisms as their larval stages migrate through various tissues to complete their life cycles. Migrating larvae through the host trigger tissue disruption/damage, leading to the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). In addition, helminth larvae and adults release excretory/secretory factors, including proteins, lipids, nucleic acids or carry bacterial symbionts, that act as pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), which similar to DAMPs, are sensed by

The fish-borne trematodes are a group of parasitic flatworms whose life cycle successively passes through various snails and fresh and brackish water fish, and terrestrial vertebrate hosts including humans. Human infection is common in countries where eating raw fish is practiced such as in the Philippines. Limited investigation in endemic areas along with misdiagnosis makes it challenging to address these infections. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence, identify risk factors for, and molecularly identify fish-borne trematodes in eight helminth-endemic communities in Mind

Hookworms infect over 500 million people globally and are a major neglected tropical disease. Their high prevalence and reinfection rates, combined with emerging drug resistance, highlight the need for new therapeutic or vaccine targets. To advance our fundamental understanding, we present a single-cell transcriptomic atlas of male and female Ancylostoma ceylanicum, providing insights into sex-specific gene expression and cellular diversity. We identified 10 distinct cell types in females and 11 in males by comparing marker genes with tissue-specific annotations. These included non-reproductiv

Hydatidosis is a parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It most commonly affects the liver and lungs, while muscular involvement is rare, accounting for only 0.5%-5% of cases. Because of its atypical presentation, muscular hydatidosis may mimic a soft-tissue tumor, exposing patients to the risk of inappropriate biopsy or surgery. We report the case of a 68-year-old patient presenting with a painless, progressively enlarging swelling of the left thigh. Ultrasound and MRI revealed a large multivesicular cyst with daughter cysts and floating membranes, showing the characteristic "ho

Asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infections are prevalent in malaria-endemic regions, yet their metabolic consequences remain poorly understood. In this exploratory study, we investigated the serum metabolomic profiles of 48 asymptomatic school-aged children from a high-transmission area in Tanzania (27 malaria-positive, 21 malaria-negative), using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy and multivariate statistical analyses. Participants were matched by age, sex, and place of residence to control for confounding factors. Group-level comparisons revealed only modest and heter

Piscirickettsia salmonis, the causal agent of salmonid rickettsial septicemia (SRS), is the main pathogen affecting farmed salmonids in Chile. Outbreaks of SRS lead to substantial economic losses for producers. Many determinants related to SRS outcomes are still poorly understood. Here, we conducted a retrospective cohort study from 2014 to 2021 to investigate the epidemiology of SRS at the farm level in southern Chile, employing historical monitoring data. Using time series analysis of weekly SRS mortality risk and sea lice (Caligus rogercresseyi ) infestation levels, we found that SRS mortal

A young Danish boy developed severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria after travel to Indonesia without malaria chemoprophylaxis or mosquito protection. Flu-like symptoms were misinterpreted as influenza, delaying diagnosis. He presented cerebral malaria and multiorgan failure requiring intensive care. Rapid treatment with IV artesunate led to full recovery. The case highlights the importance of correct travel advice, as well as early recognition of malaria symptoms and rapid malaria testing without delay after travel in a malaria endemic area, despite a low perceived local risk of malaria.
