A new species of Trichobilharzia (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) from Mareca sibilatrix (Aves: Anatidae), an endemic South American duck.

Avian schistosomatids are blood flukes parasitizing a wide spectrum of aquatic birds. However, its research in the Neotropics is ongoing with several putative new taxa pending description. Although waterfowl represent the most important avian hosts for these flukes, only a small proportion of these birds have been assessed for schistosomatids. This study aimed to describe avian schistosomatids from two native ducks from the Southern Cone of South America. A total of 24 Chiloe wigeon (Mareca sibilatrix) and three Cinnamon teals (Spatula cyanoptera) from different localities in Chile and Argenti

Locally Acquired Plasmodium falciparum Malaria in a Non-endemic Region of Lebanon: A Case Report.

Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by several Plasmodium species, transmitted through the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes, and capable of causing mild to life-threatening illness. In non-endemic areas, sporadic cases present a significant diagnostic challenge, where delay in recognition can lead to severe outcomes and death. In this case report, we present a rare case of locally acquired P. falciparum malaria in Lebanon, in a 70-year-old Lebanese female with no history of travel to endemic regions, who presented with intermittent fever, chills, headache, nausea, and abdominal pain. La

Neotropical Echinococcosis Complicated by Hepatic Abscess and Hepato-Pleural Fistula: A Case Report From the State of Acre, Brazil.

Polycystic echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by cestodes of Echinococcus vogeli, which occurs in rural and wild areas of Central and South America. Its definitive hosts are Speothos venaticus (bush dog) and Canis familiaris (domestic dog), while Cuniculus paca (paca) serves as the intermediate host. Humans become accidental hosts by consuming food or water contaminated with eggs of this helminth. In the Amazon, due to geographic, economic, and cultural factors, rural populations often consume wild meat as a main protein source. The viscera of pacas are used to feed domestic dogs, pe

Evaluating a quality improvement intervention for schistosomiasis mass drug administration in Ghana using the RE-AIM framework.

Despite efforts by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to provide services for schistosomiasis control in communities along Ghana's Volta Basin, high rates of transmission and re-infection persist in the region. To strengthen intervention effectiveness, the VRA partnered with the University of Health and Allied Sciences to conduct implementation research aimed at developing context-specific, evidence-based quality improvement strategies. This mixed-method study evaluates the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of the VRA's quality improvement intervention for their mass

Spatio-temporal infection and diversity indices of gastrointestinal helminths in Xenopus species from Lake Victoria Basin, Kenya.

Xenopus frogs (Pipidae) are aquatic anurans widely distributed across Africa, where they play important ecological, biomedical, and cultural roles. However, populations are increasingly threatened by a range of stressors, including habitat degradation, climate change, and parasitic infections. This study investigated spatio-temporal infection and diversity indices of gastrointestinal helminths in Xenopus borealis and X. victorianus from the Lake Victoria Basin, Kenya. A total of 480 individuals (240 per species) were collected between June 2024 and January 2025 from selected streams and ponds

Loss of vitamin C biosynthesis protects from the pathology of a parasitic infection.

The ability to synthesize essential molecules is sometimes lost in evolution. A classic example is ascorbate (vitamin C), which is synthesized in most animals by L-gulonolactone oxidase (GULO), an enzyme lost multiple independent times in animal evolution. This event is thought to be evolutionarily neutral; however, GULO-deficient animals including humans need to obtain ascorbate from their diet and are prone to ascorbate deficiency and scurvy. We therefore hypothesized that this disadvantage of GULO loss is offset by physiological benefits. Here, we show that ascorbate deficiency benefits mic

Partners in time: Cospeciation and host-switching shape the evolution of Leishmania parasites.

BACKGROUND: Leishmania is a neglected tropical parasite that may affect millions of people worldwide, causing infections that range from subclinical to life-threatening in many animal species, including humans. The four subgenera described (i.e., Leishmania, Mundinia, Sauroleishmania and Viannia) exhibit distinct biological and ecological characteristics. The genus likely originated during the Mesozoic era, with hypotheses suggesting a Palearctic, Neotropical, or Supercontinent origin. Understanding the evolutionary history of Leishmania parasites may clarify host specificity, geographic distr

Metabolic reprogramming and gut microbiota ecology drive divergent Plasmodium vivax infection outcomes in Anopheles darlingi.

Anopheles darlingi is the principal malaria vector in the Amazon basin, where Plasmodium vivax accounts for the majority of cases. Despite its epidemiological importance, the molecular and microbial determinants of A. darlingi susceptibility to P. vivax remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated vector-parasite-microbiota interactions using experimental infections with field-derived P. vivax gametocytaemic blood, which produced two distinct infection phenotypes: low and high oocyst burdens. Transcriptomic profiling of mosquito midguts across key parasite developmental timepoints revealed

Burden of scabies in displacement settings: A systematic review and meta-analysis among forcibly displaced populations.

BACKGROUND: By the end of 2024, an estimated 123.2 million people were forcibly displaced due to conflict and persecution, with 80% residing in low- and middle-income countries. Scabies, a neglected tropical disease affecting around 200 million people globally and causing over 455 million new cases annually, disproportionately affects displaced populations due to overcrowding, poor hygiene, and limited healthcare access. However, global evidence on its prevalence among these groups remains inconsistent. This study aimed to estimate the global pooled prevalence of scabies among forcibly displac

Identification of genes expressed in the pectoral fins and skin of Takifugu rubripes to reveal candidate genes involved in host recognition by the crustacean ectoparasite Caligus fugu.

The initial detection of host-derived chemical cues is a key physiological event that strongly influences infection success in parasitic copepods such as Caligus fugu. Although ionotropic receptors were previously identified in C. fugu as potential host-sensing molecules, their ligands and specific roles in host recognition remain unknown. Since the infective copepodid I stage preferentially attaches to the fins of the puffer host, genes expressed at higher levels in fins may contribute to host recognition by C. fugu. In this study, differentially expressed genes between the pectoral fins and

Beyond the usual signs: Pseudo-pericarditis as an under-appreciated outcome of tropical theileriosis.

Pseudopericarditis is an often-overlooked clinical manifestation of tropical theileriosis, with only a few sporadic reports describing its occurrence. The present note documents clinical cases of tropical theileriosis exhibiting characteristic signs of pseudopericarditis, including jugular vein distension and brisket oedema. The proposed pathogenesis, supported by a schematic illustration, suggests that enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes exert pressure on major intrathoracic vessels, thereby impairing venous return and producing the clinical signs observed. Additionally, the roles of oncotic, os

DNA damage-regulated autophagy modulator 1 (DRAM1)-induced lipophagy facilitates Toxoplasma gondii nutrient acquisition and infection.

Autophagy is a catabolic process that responds to various environmental stresses, such as nutrient deficiency and intracellular pathogen infection. Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that acquires nutrients from the host cells for its proliferation; however, the molecular mechanisms of T. gondii parasites' nutritional acquisition and metabolism are not fully understood. Here, we found that T. gondii type I RH strain induced host cell autophagy for nutrient acquisition and growth. T. gondii RH strain infection induced DNA damage-regulated autophagy modulator 1 (DRAM1) expression in

SARCOCYSTIS INFECTIONS IN TONGUES OF COUGARS (PUMA CONCOLOR COUGUAR) IN COLORADO.

Sarcocystis species are intracellular protozoan parasites that infect a wide range of intermediate and definitive hosts, including felids. This study reports Sarcocystis species in the tongues of cougars (Puma concolor couguar) in Colorado for the first time. By light microscope, sarcocysts were found in 4 of 30 cougars; they appeared to represent more than 2 morphologic types by light microscopy. One morphologic type had serrations on the sarcocyst wall and resembled Sarcocystis felis reported from domestic and wild felids. In the second type, serrations were not visible on the sarcocyst wall

FIRST MORPHOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR DESCRIPTION OF ANATRICHOSOMA SP. (NEMATODA: TRICHOSOMOIDIDAE) IN THE NASAL CAVITIES OF A SHEEP (OVIS ARIES) FROM SARDINIA (ITALY).

Cases of parasitic infection by Anatrichosoma spp. have occasionally been reported worldwide in a narrow range of host species, including humans. The species in which Anatrichosoma has been most commonly reported are nonhuman primates; among domestic animals, infections have only been reported in dogs and cats. Many aspects of the biological cycle and epidemiology of the parasite are still unknown. In the present study, we report the case of Anatrichosoma sp. infection in the nasal cavities of a sheep (Ovis aries) raised in Sardinia (Italy). After sagittal cutting of the sheep's head, 12 adult

Artemisinin-Based Combination Therapies in East Africa: A Systematic Review of Quality, Clinical Efficacy, and Regulatory Progress Towards Sustainable Malaria Control.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health issue in East Africa, leading to widespread illness and fatalities, especially among vulnerable populations such as children under 5 years of age and pregnant women. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are the primary treatment modality; however, their efficacy is undermined by the prevalence of substandard ACTs and the increasing risk of resistance. Therefore, it is crucial to improve evidence on quality, therapeutic efficacy, and regulatory performance to promote malaria control efforts in the region. METHODS: This systematic review fo
