Pediatric bowling injuries presenting to U.S. emergency departments: a descriptive epidemiologic study.

OBJECTIVES: Bowling is a popular youth sport, but despite its popularity, there is limited research on pediatric bowling-related injuries. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to identify common injury locations and types among pediatric bowlers and assess differences in common injured body locations and diagnoses based on age and sex. METHODS: Data were sourced from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) for the period 2014-2023, focusing on individuals 18 years old or younger. The data sourced from NEISS are raw numbers of cases, not stratified/weighted data.

Multistage surgical strategy combining bone transport and antibiotic cement in a complex lower extremity crush injury: achieving limb salvage and infection control.

BACKGROUND: High-energy lower extremity crush injuries with concurrent infection and segmental bone defects present significant therapeutic challenges, often complicated by recalcitrant osteomyelitis and compromised bone healing. Traditional approaches frequently fail to achieve simultaneous infection eradication and structural reconstruction. This case demonstrates how a staged surgical protocol combining bone transport and antibiotic cement spacer technology addresses these dual challenges. CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old male sustained an open tibiofibular fracture of the left lower extremity w

Injuries Related to Waterskiing Between 2012 and 2022: A National Database Study.

We conducted an epidemiological study by using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database to assess and quantify waterskiing injuries between 2012 and 2022. A total of 898 injuries were reported, primarily among Caucasian males during competition. Head (177, 20%), face (93, 10%), and knee (70, 8%) were the most prevalent types of injuries. Common physical examination findings included muscle strains, ligament sprains, lacerations, and fractures. Although rare, there were reported cases of dental injury, hemorrhage, crushing, foreign body, and amputation as well. These

Common Foot Fractures.

Foot fractures account for about one-third of lower extremity fractures in adults. They are typically caused by a crush injury or an axial or twisting force on the foot. Patients usually present with bony point tenderness and swelling of the affected area. Weight-bearing varies based on the extent of the fracture and the patient's pain tolerance. When a foot or toe fracture is suspected, anteroposterior, lateral, and oblique radiography with weight-bearing should be obtained. The Ottawa foot and ankle rules can help determine the need for radiography after an acute ankle inversion injury. Many

Traumatic Amputation From a Rollover Farming Incident in a 16-Year-Old.

There is very little literature on the overall management of adolescent traumatic amputation, specifically of the lower extremity. We present a case involving an adolescent patient involved in an industrial farm tractor rollover with substantial crush and degloving injuries requiring bilateral lower extremity amputations. The patient was initially assessed and acutely managed in the field before arriving at an adult level 1 trauma center having two right lower extremity tourniquets already applied and a pelvic binder in place. During his hospitalization, he was revised to bilateral above-knee

Outcome predictors of patients who underwent limb amputation/s following trauma at a level I trauma center in North India.

PURPOSE: Limb amputation is one of the oldest medical operations, dating back over 2500 years to Hippocrates' time. In developing countries like India, most of the patients are young, and trauma is the primary cause of limb amputation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the factors that can predict the outcome of patients who underwent upper or lower limb amputations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the prospectively collected data of patients who underwent limb amputations from January 2015 to December 2019. RESULTS: From January 2015 to December 20

Prevention of knee stiffness following ligament reconstruction: Understanding the role of Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition (AMI).

The knee is a joint that is often injured in sport, with a large and increasing number of ligament tears and repairs; postoperative complications can lead to poor outcome, such as stiffness. Beyond the well-known and well-described intra- and extra-articular causes of postoperative stiffness, the present study introduces the concept of a central reflex motor inhibition mechanism called arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI). AMI occurs after trauma and can be defined as active knee extension deficit due to central impairment of Vastus Medialis Obliquus (VMO) contraction, often associated with spi

In-Situ Fracture Tolerance of the Metatarsals During Quasi-Static Compressive Loading of the Human Foot.

Accidental foot injuries including metatarsal fractures commonly result from compressive loading. The ability of personal protective equipment to prevent these traumatic injuries depends on the understanding of metatarsal fracture tolerance. However, the in situ fracture tolerance of the metatarsals under direct compressive loading to the foot's dorsal surface remains unexplored, even though the metatarsals are the most commonly fractured bones in the foot. The goal of this study was to quantify the in situ fracture tolerance of the metatarsals under simulated quasi-static compressive loading.

A Rare Case of Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS) Involving the Upper Limb in a Patient on Warfarin.

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is an acute event characterized by increased pressure in the extremities where fascia encloses muscles, vessels, and nerves, leading to complications in tissue perfusion and, eventually, tissue necrosis and death. This is usually seen after trauma, crush injuries, and fractures. Similar events can also happen in the abdomen and lead to impaired perfusion in the abdominal organs. Hypovolemia, medications, and repeated or suboptimal diagnostic tests tend to worsen a pre-existing ACS, and the mainstay of its management is fasciotomy to prevent ischemic necrosis an

Is Reoperation Higher Than Expected after Below-the-knee Amputation? A Single-center Evaluation of Factors Associated with Reoperation at 1 Year.

BACKGROUND: Below-the-knee amputation (BKA) is relatively common among patients with vascular disease, infection, trauma, or neoplastic disease. Many BKAs are performed in patients with incompletely treated medical comorbidities, and some are performed in patients with acute high-energy trauma or crush injuries, malignant neoplasm undergoing time-sensitive limb removal, and diabetes with active infection or sepsis. Consequently, revision is common. Prior studies of outcomes after BKA, including several based on the American College of Surgeons-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS
