Evaluation of Helmet Wearing Compliance: A Bionic Spidersense System-Based Method for Helmet Chinstrap Detection.

With the rapid advancement of industrial intelligence, ensuring occupational safety has become an increasingly critical concern. Among the essential personal protective equipment (PPE), safety helmets play a vital role in preventing head injuries. There is a growing demand for real-time detection of helmet chinstrap wearing status during industrial operations. However, existing detection methods often encounter limitations such as user discomfort or potential privacy invasion. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a non-intrusive approach for detecting the wearing state of helmet c

Can Simple Changes in Splinting Technique Reduce Posterior Heel Contact Pressure?

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity splints are commonly used for the treatment of foot and ankle injuries and carry the risk of posterior heel pressure injury. Assessing heel contact pressures in a splint may guide clinicians toward specific splint designs that are associated with lower contact pressures. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This biomechanical study tested multiple splint characteristics to answer: (1) Which combination of heel position, padding thickness, and padding type (brand) minimizes posterior heel contact pressure? (2) Are there factors while making a splint that are associated with higher c

Lanthanide luminescent markers in hollow-point projectiles to facilitate post-mortem ballistic analysis.

Hollow-point ammunition represents a substantial segment of the global arms market and is employed by law enforcement agencies in multiple countries. Its widespread adoption is primarily attributed to the greater extent of tissue damage it produces, combined with its reduced likelihood of over-penetration. Upon impacting the human body, the projectile deforms, often undergoing multiple deviations in its trajectory and, in some instances, fragmenting. These ballistic characteristics present significant challenges during autopsy procedures, frequently making it impossible to accurately reconstru

Muscle-tendon properties assessed by three-dimensional ultrasound in clinically well-performing clubfoot patients treated with the Ponseti method.

INTRODUCTION: Clubfoot is a congenital birth defect affecting musculoskeletal tissues of the affected lower legs, resulting in the typical appearance and changes in muscle-tendon properties. These properties change during development due to growth and activity, but how these properties differ across ages in clubfoot remains not fully understood. This study aimed to describe plantarflexor muscle-tendon volumes between affected and unaffected legs in unilateral clubfoot patients and explore the relationship between muscle volume and age. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was performe

Doctor, when can I drive? - Influence of muscle weakness of dorsal flexors and plantar flexors from the ankle joint on driving ability.

PURPOSE: Dorsiflexion (DF) and plantarflexion (PF) weakness are among the most commonly observed muscle strength impairments of the lower extremities. This may be due to spinal conditions, peripheral nerve damage, trauma or multiple other reasons. The personally used automobile remains the most commonly used mode of individual transportation in Germany. However, it is unclear whether and to what extent DF or PF weakness affects the ability to drive safely. This study aimed to experimentally assess the impact of DF and PF weakness on driving ability. METHODS: Twenty healthy licensed drivers wi

Deep vein thrombosis after gunshot injury.

Pathophysiology and incidence for VTE: Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, collectively referred to as venous thromboembolism (VTE), represent significant complication in trauma patients, particularly in combat settings where injuries often involve high-energy mechanisms such as blasts and ballistic trauma. Combat casualties face additional risks less prevalent in civilian settings, including early transfusion of blood products, the use of fresh frozen plasma outside of large volume blood transfusions, the use of tourniquets and multiple or above-knee amputations, contributing to the

Embroidered paper-based electrochemical wearable device for pH monitoring in wounds.

Herein, we report the first electrochemical microfluidic thread/paper-based analytical device (μTPAD) by harnessing the synergistic combination of embroidery as a manufacturing technique and paper-based technology. The effectiveness of the μTPAD was tested for potentiometric pH monitoring in chronic wounds. A configuration was designed for multiple analyses in chronic wounds, simply by cutting off one of the μthread-paper pads used for measurement and renewal every time the electrochemical cell was used for measurement. The electrochemical cell was constituted by conductive silver threads coat

Proposal of a Marker-less Registration Method for Measuring Changes in Daily Swelling of the Foot of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury Using a Handheld 3D Scanner.

Individuals with spinal cord injury may face difficulties in perceiving their physical condition due to somatosensory deficits. In a previous study, we identified a potential correlation between leg swelling in individuals with spinal cord injury and their underlying physical condition. In this study, we propose a methodology for quantifying changes in daily leg swelling in individuals with spinal cord injury. This methodology involves the calculation of the volume of three-dimensional (3D) scan data obtained from a 3D scanner. Several 3D scanning methods have been proposed to measure foot swe

Fourteen-year outcome of unilateral leg replantation after bilateral lower leg and unilateral upper extremity amputation following traumatic injury.

In cases of traumatic major extremity amputations, particularly in the lower extremity, every stage-ranging from decision-making to implementation and outcomes-remains a topic of debate. Managing major amputation cases with high mortality rates is extremely challenging both during the injury and treatment processes. We present a rare and severe case of a 30-year-old patient who sustained injuries from a concrete machine, resulting in bilateral lower extremity amputations and a unilateral proximal arm amputation. We successfully performed a replantation at the proximal ankle level on one side.

Outcomes of Quadriceps and Patellar Tendon Repairs Augmented With Polyester Tapes.

INTRODUCTION: Rupture of the quadriceps tendon and patellar tendon (QT/PT) is an infrequent injury that displays a bimodal distribution, typically in low-energy injuries in elderly patients and sporting injuries in younger patients. Independent risk factors for QT/PT rupture include renal failure, obesity, steroid or antibiotic use, old age, and diabetes. Prompt repair restores the mobility of the extensor mechanism of the leg and failure can lead to significant morbidity. Augmenting QT/PT repair with polyester tapes could assist in improving the strength of the repair. The purpose of this stu

Atypical Presentation of Acute Compartment Syndrome in the Lower Limb: A Case Report of When Pain Does Not Guide the Diagnosis.

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is a surgical emergency that, if not promptly treated, can lead to muscle necrosis, limb loss, or death. Although disproportionate pain is traditionally considered the hallmark symptom, atypical presentations without pain have been described. We report the case of a 42-year-old male who sustained multiple traumatic injuries in a motorcycle-vehicle collision and subsequently developed silent compartment syndrome in the left thigh and leg. Despite being conscious and neurologically intact, the patient did not report significant pain at any point. The diagnosis wa

Persuasive of lateral supra malleolar flap for distal leg and foot reconstruction. A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Distal leg and foot have unique anatomical characteristics, and multiple etiologies may cause defects in various patterns that mandate reconstruction. Local flaps, such as perforator flaps, can give good outcomes with less complication. The lateral supra malleolar flap can effectively cover the distal leg and foot defect. In this article, we highlight the utility of this flap and its outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a descriptive, retrospective, multi-center, hospital-based performed to assess the efficacy of lateral supra malleolar flap in the reconstruction of dist
