Evaluating the injury incidence from skate shoes in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: The goals of this study were to evaluate whether the increased use of skate shoes may lead to an increase in injuries for children and adolescents aged 5 to 14 years in the United States and to describe the types of injuries reported by emergency departments as a result of skate shoe use. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2006 for injuries resulting from footwear in children and adolescents aged 5 to 14 years. Injuries resulting from skate shoe use were identified by manual review of

In vivo assessment of conduction velocity and refractory period of denervated muscle fibers.

Stimulation needle electromyography was used to study the muscle fiber conduction velocity and refractory period in 4 patients with long-term denervation of the lower limb muscles due to lesion of the conus cauda or cauda equina (2 untrained and 2 trained by functional electrical stimulation). In untrained patients, the results demonstrated that propagation velocity is reduced and refractory period of the muscle fiber is increased with time of denervation. The patients performing electrical stimulation training showed higher conduction velocities and reduced refractory period despite longer la

[Therapy and prevention of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in gynecology and obstetrics].

AIM: The aim of this paper is to present the latest developments in therapy and prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis in gynecology and obstetrics. DATA EXTRACTION: The data presented in the paper have been extracted from the Current Contents database. In the introduction, the coagulation cascade is described, and certain coagulation abnormalities caused by deficiency or decreased activity of coagulation factors are highlighted. The most prominent signs of deep vein thrombosis in pregnant women are swelling and tenderness of the affected leg, sometimes accompanied with fever and leucocytosis. I

Phantom pain: natural history and association with rehabilitation.

All 338 lower limb amputees under the care of one disablement services centre were asked to assess phantom pain severity at different times after amputation. Of 212 (63%) replies, 13 had died, 22 were non-limb wearers and 22 were unable to complete the questionnaire. In all, 176 useful replies were received--96 below-knee, 74 above-knee and 6 through-knee. Of these, 98 amputations were performed for trauma and 78 for vascular disease. Below-knee amputees rehabilitated better than above-knee amputees (P < 0.05) and traumatic better than vascular amputees (P < 0.0001). Preoperative pain was wors

[Stable elastic nailing].

The authors illustrate an original method of osteosynthesis concerning shaft fractures in children: Stable Elastic Nailing. They elaborate the physiopathological basis and specify all details of this technique. The results of this treatment as well as its limits are considered through personal experience of 217 femurs, 42 tibias, 36 humerus, 84 fore-arms and 96 supracondylar fractures of the humerus. We essentially proceeded for a comparative analysis with other methods of osteosynthesis or conservative treatment, illustrating the net superiority of stable elastic nailing in their indications

Parameter identification of the human lower limb under dynamic, transient torsional loading.

The response of the lower limb to dynamic, transient torsional loading applied at the foot has been measured for a male test subject. The dynamic loading was provided by a computer controlled pneumatic system which applied single haversine (i.e. half cycle of a sine wave) axial moment pulses of variable amplitude (0-100 Nm) and duration (50-600 ms). Potentiometers measured the absolute rotations of the three leg segments. Test variables included rotation direction, weight bearing and joint flexion. Two approaches were explored for specifying parameters (i.e. inertia, damping, stiffness) of a t
