Development and Internal Validation of a Nomogram for Predicting Early Muscular Calf Venous Thrombosis Following Hip Fracture.

Early muscular calf vein thrombosis (MCVT) detected within 48 h after injury may affect perioperative management in patients with hip fractures. This study aimed to develop and internally validate a nomogram for estimating early MCVT risk in this population. This study retrospectively screened hip fracture patients admitted between 2021 and 2024. Patients were categorized into MCVT and non-MCVT groups based on an admission ultrasound performed within 48 h after injury. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used for feature selection, and restricted cubic spline

The impact of high knee walking on knee pain and straight leg raising function after patellar fracture surgery: A retrospective study.

Open reduction and tension band internal fixation is the standard treatment for patellar fractures. Although this surgery aids early weight-bearing and joint movement, full recovery of knee function - particularly the ability to perform straight leg raising (SLR) - often still requires a longer period, which can affect the patients' daily activities, such as getting out of bed and dressing. To enhance its recovery, we implemented an early high knee walking (HKW) protocol from June 2023. This retrospective analysis was conducted on 48 patients from June 2023 to April 2025, with 42 eligible pati

iFEMG-Based Muscle Function Assessment for Rehabilitation Monitoring After Knee Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair Surgery.

The ligaments and muscles of the knee joint play an important role in maintaining knee joint stability, ensuring smooth movement of the lower limbs. However, the assessment and monitoring of the muscle function following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction are hindered due to the inherent constraints of conventional clinical evaluation techniques. This study employed an integrated flexible force-electromyography (iFEMG) system to quantify differences in neuromuscular activities and associated mechanical properties between affected and healthy sides during post-ACL reconstruction re

Avulsion Fracture at the Femoral Origin of the Medial Head of the Gastrocnemius in an Adolescent: A Case Report with Two-Year Clinical Follow-Up.

Avulsion fractures at the femoral origin of the medial head of the gastrocnemius are exceptionally rare, particularly in skeletally immature patients, and may be overlooked when evaluating acute posterior knee pain. A previously healthy 13-year-old boy developed acute posteromedial left knee pain and felt a sudden pop while running. He could bear weight with difficulty and held the knee in slight flexion because terminal extension was painful. Examination showed focal posteromedial tenderness, preserved motion with pain at full extension, and an intact distal neurovascular status. Plain radiog

Short Femoral Stem Performance in Femoral Hip Fracture: Clinical and Radiological Evaluation and Comparative Study of Patients Older than 65 Years.

Background and Objectives: Short femoral stems are increasingly used in total hip arthroplasty (THA), yet evidence regarding their performance in elderly femoral neck fracture (FNF) patients is limited. In this study, we compared clinical and radiographic outcomes of the use of a short femoral stem (SFS) versus a conventional standard stem (CSS) in cementless THA. Materials and Methods: This prospective, single-center case-control study (1:2) included patients ≥ 65 years of age with displaced FNF (Garden 3-4) treated with cementless THA. Follow-up lasted a minimum of 2 years. Clinical evaluati

Increased contralateral dynamic valgus in female athletes following ACL reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Female athletes have a higher risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which has been associated with neuromuscular deficits and dynamic valgus, while contralateral risk profiles after ACL reconstruction remain insufficiently characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether female patients after ACL reconstruction exhibit greater contralateral valgus angles compared with male patients, indicating a higher risk profile for secondary ACL injury. It was hypothesized that dynamic valgus would be more pronounced in women than in men. METHODS: In this predefined

Lower Extremity Reconstruction: Comprehensive Considerations in Preoperative Planning and Technique Selection.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity defects are common, complex, and often debilitating injuries that significantly impair mobility and function. Trauma remains the most common indication for reconstruction, particularly in the setting of open fractures and extensive soft tissue loss. Nontraumatic causes such as infection, wound dehiscence, vascular insufficiency, malignancies, and diabetes also require similar reconstructive strategies. Despite their prevalence, management of these defects remains challenging for many surgeons. METHODS: This comprehensive review provides a current literature review

A multidisciplinary approach in a forensic case study of a skeletonized child homicide victim.

Child homicide represents a severe form of violent crime, and cases identified exclusively through skeletal remains are uncommon and pose particular forensic challenges, requiring a multidisciplinary investigative approach. We report a Romanian cold case involving a 5-year-old girl who disappeared in 2006 and whose remains were discovered in 2021 in a shallow grave beneath rose bushes on her father's property. Clothing analysis revealed nine perforations consistent with sharp-force trauma, subsequently confirmed through forensic reconstruction. The remains were completely skeletonized and oste

Pain Sensitivity, Psychological Factors, and Muscle Function in Male Athletes With Long-Standing Groin Pain and Matched Controls.

Long-standing groin pain in athletes is often managed as a localized musculoskeletal tissue injury. Treatment-resistant symptoms and disability after return to sport suggest that other factors may also contribute. This study compared pain sensitivity, psychological factors, and muscle function between male athletes with long-standing groin pain (N = 20) and sex-, age-, and sports-matched controls (N = 20). Pressure-pain thresholds were assessed with a handheld algometer at the adductor longus muscle and origin, iliopsoas tendon, pubic bone, pubic symphysis, gluteus maximus muscle, and elbow. P

Diagnostic pitfalls in forensic pathology: Postmortem facial lesions mimicking trauma caused by pharaoh ants (Monomorium pharaonis).

Misinterpretation of insect-related postmortem artifacts as traumatic injuries remains a critical diagnostic challenge in forensic pathology, particularly in enclosed indoor environments. We report a case involving a deceased adult male found indoors with multiple superficial perioral and facial lesions initially suspected to be perimortem trauma. However, based on photographic evaluation by a forensic entomologist, the lesions were identified as likely caused by postmortem activity of Monomorium pharaonis (pharaoh ants), a synanthropic species commonly found in human dwellings. Numerous ant e

Can we rebuild what has been taken? A narrative review of biological and functional consequences of hamstring tendon harvest in ACL surgery.

This narrative review aimed to summarize the consequences of hamstring tendon (HT) harvest for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), with reference to tendon regeneration, knee flexor morphology, clinical assessment of knee flexion strength, and rehabilitation strategies for optimizing recovery. The available evidence suggests that the harvested semitendinosus (ST) and gracilis (GR) tendons regenerate in ∼70-86% of cases after ACLR. Despite tendon regeneration, ACLR with HT autograft results in morphological alterations in both the ST and GR. These changes include tendon elongation

The Composite Radial Forearm Free Flap for Tibialis Anterior Tendon Reconstruction: A Case Report.

Distal leg reconstruction is particularly challenging due to limited local options. This challenge is accentuated when there is a concurrent tendon rupture and threatened hardware, making soft tissue coverage crucial for preserving limb function. This report describes a 37-year-old male with a 5 × 8 cm wound on the distal leg, including a 7.5 cm loss of tibialis anterior tendon (TAT) with underlying tibial hardware. A 5 × 9 cm composite left radial forearm free flap (FF), including flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus tendons, was used to reconstruct the TAT and cover the tibial hardware.

Mechanisms, injury patterns, and kinematic features of hamstring strain injuries in football (soccer): a systematic review and meta-analysis of video-analysis studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Match video analysis enables retrospective examination of the movement tasks, match situations, and body postures immediately before and after hamstring strain injury (HSI) in football, thereby providing information on the injury process that is difficult to obtain directly from conventional clinical or imaging data. This study aimed to systematically evaluate video-based studies of football matches and to compare the relative reporting frequencies of several prespecified key epidemiological contrasts. In addition, single-arm proportion pooling was used to provide des
