Postmortem computed tomography identified indigestible umeboshi pit surrounded by maggot masses in oral cavity suggesting food-related choking in a decomposed body.

Determination of the cause of death is a fundamental task in forensic medicine. However, this becomes particularly challenging in cases of decomposition, where critical findings necessary for diagnosis are often obscured by putrefaction or insect activity. Here, we report a case of a man in his 70s who went missing during a summer hike and was found approximately 10 m below a trail after four days, in a state of moderate decomposition with heavy maggot infestation. Postmortem computed tomography revealed no major traumatic injuries but identified a high-density, oval-shaped foreign body, measu

A Comprehensive Analysis of Malpractice Claims Following Management of Hip Fractures.

Hip fractures are highly prevalent and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of malpractice claims related to hip fractures. The Westlaw legal database was queried for all malpractice cases involving hip fractures from 1978 to 2020. Demographic data, monetary payouts, reasons for litigation, and case outcomes were analyzed. In total, 80 cases were included with a mean plaintiff age of 58 years and 60% female. Fifty-five cases (69%) resulted in a defendant verdict, while 25 cases (31%) resulted in a plaintiff verdict/settlement.

Post-mortem methemoglobinemia: A retrospective analysis of forensic autopsy cases with elevated methemoglobin levels.

BACKGROUND: Methemoglobinemia is rarely reported beyond isolated case reports in forensic literature, and comparative analyses of cases with elevated postmortem methemoglobin (MetHb) levels are rare. This study aims to identify such cases and assess links between elevated MetHb and the cause of death. METHODS: Crime scene, autopsy, and toxicology reports of cases autopsied at the Morgue Department of the Council of Forensic Medicine in Istanbul, between 2022 and 2024, were retrospectively reviewed. The study included cases in which elevated blood MetHb levels were detected post-mortem. RESUL

Retrospective analysis of suicide cases in the province of Ferrara.

INTRODUCTION: In 2016, the Postgraduate School of Forensic Medicine of the University of Ferrara presented a paper at the Annual Congress of the AAFS that analyzed some characteristics of suicides in the territory of the Province of Ferrara between 1996 and July 2016. This presentation is intended to stand as an ideal follow-up to that work. Since 2017, the number of suicides in Italy has been progressively decreasing and peaked in 2021 (0.40 per 10,000 inhabitants). In Emilia-Romagna, available data confirm a steady decline in the number of suicides since 2001. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records

Clinical and economic impact of wound care in the UK: a critical review of Guest's publications, 2015-2025.

Wound care in the UK has long been challenging, clinically complex and economically burdensome. Wounds affect millions of patients annually, costing the NHS billions of pounds. Despite the scale of this problem, wound care services have historically been subject to fragmentation, variable clinical practice, delayed interventions, a lack of coordinated policy focus and poor data collection. Between 2015 and 2025, this situation has persisted in the face of increasing pressure on NHS resources, rising patient demand and growing evidence of suboptimal outcomes, particularly for chronic wounds suc

Computed tomography and 3D visualization in forensic shooting distance estimation - A ballistic gelatine pilot study.

Accurate estimation of shooting distance is one of the main aspects in forensic gunshot case reconstruction. Reliable methods to estimate shooting distance are thus important for forensic practitioners. In this pilot study we test how computed tomography (CT) based evaluation of bullet cavitation could potentially be utilized to differentiate shooting distance. To conduct our study, we utilized ballistic gelatine blocks as a soft tissue simulant. Test shooting was performed from two distances, 20 and 100 m. Four expanding monolithic bullets were used all in 0.30 caliber (Barnes TTSX, Sako Blad
