Knee and trunk biomechanics during a single leg drop vertical jump. The effects of horizontal distance, sex, and limb dominance.

BACKGROUND: The drop vertical jump (DVJ) is used to identify biomechanical risk factors associated with non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, which often occur during eccentric loading. However, the influence of the horizontal jump distance, sex, and limb laterality on lower extremity and trunk biomechanics remains unclear. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 132 adolescents (83 males, 49 females, 15.0 ± 1.6 y) from a school strength and conditioning program. Athletes jumped from a 0.30 m box at two distances (0.15 m and 0.45 m). Kinematic and kinetic data were coll

Effects of testosterone-augmented multimodal exercise intervention in spinal cord injury: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to profound muscle atrophy, aerobic deconditioning, and metabolic dysfunction. Exercise-based interventions alone produce modest benefits. Whether testosterone can augment physiologic responses to exercise in this population remains untested. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy and safety of home-based intervention combining functional electrical stimulation-assisted leg cycling (FES-LC), arm ergometry (AE), and testosterone compared with FES-LC, AE plus placebo in adults with SCI. METHODS: This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial enrolled 8

Letter to editor regarding article: "A continuous forensic spectral analysis study to identify antemortem and postmortem muscle contusions by chemometrics".

This letter provides a critical analysis of the translational pathway for the innovative FTIR spectroscopy methodology proposed by Wang et al. (2025) to differentiate antemortem from postmortem muscle contusions. While the reported 92% accuracy in a controlled rodent model is commendable, its direct applicability to complex human forensic casework remains unsubstantiated. This correspondence identifies three critical barriers to court-admissible adoption: the significant biological and taphonomic divergence between rodent models and human cadavers, the unvalidated robustness of spectral biomar

The forensic medical examination findings as they relate to the judicial outcomes in cases of non-fatal strangulation.

BACKGROUND: Non-fatal strangulation (NFS) occurs in various contexts. Victims of NFS may face barriers to disclose, resulting in underreporting and subsequent police charges not proceeding. This study aims to explore the relationship between the court outcomes, the forensic medical examination findings, and the provision of a medicolegal report in patients who are referred by police to a forensic medical service in NFS cases that do not involve sexual assault. METHOD: This is an exploratory case series of 167 non-sexual assault patients aged 14 and over who reported NFS following referral by

Bone Tunnel Microarchitecture and Early Functional Recovery After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Prospective HR-pQCT Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The biological healing of the bone tunnel is crucial for success in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Nonetheless, conventional imaging cannot assess the key microarchitectural properties of the healing bone, resulting in a gap in our understanding of early recovery. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to identify the specific bone structure and density measurements most closely associated with successful recovery during the first 6 months. It was hypothesized that the microarchitectural properties of the bone tunnel, quantified by high-resolution peripheral quant

Postural control and leg muscle activation in athletes who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and healthy controls: A preliminary study on acute responses to whole-body vibration.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) restores mechanical knee stability, but neuromuscular and balance deficits often persist. Whole-body vibration (WBV) has been widely studied as a method to improve postural control and stimulate the neuromuscular system. However, the acute effects of WBV following ACL-R on postural control and muscle activation remain unclear. METHODS: Twenty-seven competitive athletes (13 ACL-R, 14 healthy athletes) underwent static and dynamic balance assessments using centre of pressure (CoP) measures synchronised with surface electromyography (

Increased Preactivation and Cocontraction in ACL-Reconstructed Athletes: Insights from AI-Based EMG Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears disrupt the neural structures within the ligament, impairing the neuromuscular control of knee-stabilizing muscles. Consequently, muscle activity patterns are a crucial area of research in return-to-sport evaluation after ACL reconstruction (ACL-R). Artificial intelligence-based methods may help identify and extract meaningful parameters from these patterns. This study aims at accurately and reliably quantifying knee muscle preactivation and timing-based cocontraction indexes (CCIs) in athletes with and without ACL-R during sports-specific l

Injury as a silent witness: forensic medicine's role in the legal qualification of an explosive case.

In forensic practice, the reconstruction of criminal behavior and charge determination are often entrusted solely to law enforcement, with forensic medicine playing a marginal, confirmatory role. Nonetheless, accurate injury analysis remains fundamental and, in specific contexts, may be decisive. The authors present a case that underscores the crucial role of interdisciplinary forensic collaboration - particularly between forensic pathologist and ballistics expert - in the reconstruction of the event dynamics and in supporting judicial decision-making aimed at the accurate charge determination

Characteristics of corticospinal excitability following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and immediate effects of transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: After patients underwent standard postoperative rehabilitation following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), some still exhibited persistent functional deficits postoperatively, which might be associated with adaptive changes in the excitability of neural pathways. This study investigated corticospinal excitability in patients following ACLR and examined the immediate neuromodulatory effects of transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation (tsDCS). METHODS: Twenty ACLR patients and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent monopulse transcranial magnetic

Updated German National S1 Guideline on Pediatric Lower Leg Shaft Fractures.

Fractures of the diaphysis of the lower leg account for approximately 6% of all fractures in children and adolescents. A distinction must be made between isolated tibial shaft fractures, which are primarily managed conservatively, and combined lower leg shaft fractures (involving both the tibia and fibula). The latter are significantly less stable and therefore more frequently treated with osteosynthesis. If the fracture is non-displaced or tolerably displaced, immobilization in a long leg cast for about 4 weeks is sufficient. This requires that no secondary displacement occurs within the cast

Effects of Functional Rehabilitation on Muscle Strength, Dynamic Balance and Functional Performance 1 Year after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Return to sport (RTS) success rates remain suboptimal for high sports demand individuals (HSDs) following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Traditional rehabilitation model (TRM) primarily focuses on strength recovery and range of motion but demonstrates deficiencies in neuromuscular control and sport-specific conditioning. AIMS: This study aimed to compare the effects of functional rehabilitation model (FRM) versus Traditional rehabilitation model (TRM) on post-operative functional recovery and RTS outcomes in HSDs. METHODS: A prospective single-blind randomised

Epidemiology of Lower Leg Fractures at a Colorado Ski Resort.

Lower extremity fractures are relatively common in winter sports. This retrospective descriptive study evaluated the demographics, injury mechanisms, and environmental factors associated with lower leg fractures (below the knee, excluding tibial plateau and fibular head fractures) among patients treated at a Colorado clinic during the 2012/13 to 2016/17 ski seasons. The chart review confirmed diagnoses and assessed associated factors. A total of 346 lower leg, ankle, and/or foot fractures were identified, representing 5.4% of all visits. The average patient age was 33.1 years (range 4-74), and

[Return to sports after cruciate ligament surgery : Retrospective evaluation of the results of return to sports (RTS) testing after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in an acute care hospital].

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study investigates functional fitness and return to sport (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction at an acute care hospital. ACL injury often leads to functional knee impairment. Modern rehabilitation focuses on individualized, functional criteria rather than fixed time intervals to ensure a safe RTS. OBJECTIVE: What is the functional and psychological status of patients approximately 1 year postsurgery based on the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), ACL-RSI (RSI: Return to Sport after Injury scale), and RTS tests? Single stab injuries to the trunk in assault cases-A comparative study of female and male victims in clinical forensic medicine.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Determining the causation of an injury in living individuals is a key task for forensic pathologists. However, little is known about sex-based differences in injury characteristics. The study aims to examine sex-based differences in single stab injuries to the trunk among assault survivors, to potentially identify injury patterns that could aid forensic assessment and help in the management of these patients in emergency care. METHODS: Using the Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine's registry, we identified 385 survivors of single stab injuries to the trunk (361 men, 24
