Research Note: Validation of a novel scoring system for toe pecking damage in laying hens.

Toe pecking is an injurious behavior in commercial laying hens, that can result in pain, tissue damage, loss of toe digits, and mortality. However, little is known about the onset, risk factors and potential interventions for toe pecking behavior. To allow systematic and consistent recording of the prevalence and severity of toe pecking wounds in both research and practice, a validated and easily applicable scoring system would be helpful. Here, a scoring system for toe wounds was developed, ranging from a score of 0 (i.e., normal, greasy, no abnormal scales, no wounds, all nails) to a score o

Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA)-guided precision reconstruction in complex lower leg wounds.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of complex lower leg wounds presents significant challenges due to extensive soft tissue damage, vascular variations, and potential neurovascular injuries. While flap transfer, particularly free flaps, remains the preferred method for reconstruction, the lack of precise preoperative vascular information often complicates surgical planning. This study introduces a Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA)-guided approach for precision reconstruction to address these challenges. PURPOSE: This study aims to elucidate the critical role of precise preoperative assessment of

Quadriceps Strength Correlations and Biomechanical Differences During the Single-Leg Squat Test With Posterior Versus Neutral Standardization After ACL Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), the single-leg squat test (SLST) may be included in an initial/baseline performance testing battery. During the SLST, the position of the nonstance limb is known to affect the biomechanics/kinematics of the test, making SLST standardization important for comparing outcomes after ACLR. HYPOTHESIS: The position of the nonstance limb during the SLST will influence the correlation between peak knee flexion limb-symmetry index (LSI) and quadriceps strength LSI, and affect lower extremity biomechanics during the SLST. STUDY DESIGN

Integration of CTA Run-off Score and Systemic Resuscitation Indices to Predict Outcomes in Emergency Lower Extremity Flap Reconstruction: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

AIM: Reconstruction of severe lower extremity trauma with extensive soft tissue defects remains a major microsurgical concern. Unlike elective procedures, emergency reconstruction is plagued by higher rates of necrosis and failure. Current preoperative assessments predominantly focus on local vascular patency, often neglecting systemic physiological disturbances. This gap in the assessment process highlights the need to incorporate whole-body resuscitation indicators. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of combining a modified computed tomography angiography (CTA) Run-off Score w

Iatrogenic superior gluteal nerve stretch in surgical fixation of acetabular fractures through a Kocher-Langenbeck approach: a cadaveric study.

OBJECTIVES: Fixation of posterior column fractures through a Kocher‒Langenbeck approach requires retraction of the gluteus medius and minimus and, therefore, the superior gluteal nerve (SGN). Iatrogenic nerve injury is a concern that may result in hip abductor weakness and altered gait patterns. The purpose of this study was to measure the amount of stretch to the SGN relative to common placement of a retractor during a posterior approach to the acetabulum for fracture fixation. METHODS: An IRB-approved cadaveric study was performed. The Kocher-Langenbeck approach was performed on ten hips fr

Neuromuscular training for ACL injury prevention in collegiate athletes: a four-week program improves biomechanical risk factors and functional performance.

BACKGROUND: Collegiate athletes face a high risk of non-contact ACL injuries during pivoting and landing maneuvers. Current evidence supports neuromuscular training for injury prevention, but optimal program duration and specific adaptations remain unclear. This study investigated whether a four-week neuromuscular training program could enhance functional performance and modifiable biomechanical risk factors in high-risk athletes. METHODS: This single-group pre-/post-test design recruited 30 competitive collegiate athletes (median age: 18.5 years; interquartile range [IQR]: 17-25) who complet

Decoupling speed matters: Optimizing gait mechanics after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with Split-belt adaptation training of the healthy leg.

BACKGROUND: Knee and limb underloading are common problems after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction associated with early-onset osteoarthritis. Split-belt treadmill training is a promising method to address knee/limb underloading, but the dose-response relationship and its efficacy to target underloading after reconstruction remain unknown. Here, we examined if split-belt treadmill training of the healthy limb (i.e., modifying belt speed under this limb) affects ACL knee/limb loading. METHODS: Twenty-five participants with ACL reconstruction (Age: 23.24 ± 6.48 yr, Height: 1.73 ±

Evolution of the Lower Extremity Reconstruction: From Limb Salvage to Functional Reconstruction.

Lower extremity reconstruction has evolved from a focus on limb salvage to prioritizing functional restoration. This shift has been driven by advances in microsurgery, fixation techniques, imaging, and the integration of orthopedic and plastic surgery expertise through the orthoplastic approach. This collaborative model emphasizes simultaneous bone stabilization and soft tissue reconstruction, recognizing their interdependence in healing. Evidence shows reduced infection rates, faster definitive treatment, and improved functional outcomes with orthoplastic care. Modern strategies favor the "re

Optimal Timing in Reconstruction for Traumatic Lower Extremity Injuries.

Open lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries that require soft tissue reconstruction carry significant risks of complications, including flap failure, infection, and nonunion. These complications predispose patients to worse physical, psychological, and economic outcomes and negatively impact quality of life. Teaching based on the work of Marko Godina suggests that flap reconstruction performed within 72 hours of injury reduces major complications. However, contemporary studies incorporating advances in negative pressure wound therapy suggest that flap reconstruction within 7 days may provide

Lower Extremity Reconstruction for Open Fractures with Associated Vascular Injuries: Updates in the Management of Gustilo IIIC Injuries.

Gustilo IIIC fractures represent the most severe spectrum of lower extremity trauma, characterized by high-energy skeletal injury, vascular disruption, and soft-tissue loss. Contemporary management demands early orthoplastic collaboration, rapid revascularization, and thoughtful soft-tissue reconstruction to optimize limb salvage. This review synthesizes current evidence and evolving strategies, including timing of coverage, flap selection, and adjunctive microsurgical techniques including flow through flaps, to guide decision-making in these complex injuries. Emphasis is placed on functional

Effectiveness of transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation combined with exercise training in patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current standardized rehabilitation protocols for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often fail to fully resolve functional deficits arising from initial injury and subsequent surgery. These lingering issues are tied to neural impairments such as reduced corticospinal excitability and weakened motor cortex activation, which disrupt sensorimotor signal transmission, impair motor control, and hinder recovery even after post-operative rehabilitation. Growing evidence suggests that advancing post-ACLR care should synchronize the normalization of neural pathways with perip
