Self-management interventions for burn survivors: A literature review among patients with burns and other comparable chronic conditions.

This review aimed to describe self-management interventions for burn survivors and assess their effectiveness, while also examining interventions for comparable acute onset chronic conditions - myocardial infarction (MI) and lower extremity trauma (LET) - to gain broader insights. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across five databases for studies published between January 2010 and October 2025. Eligible studies evaluated self-management interventions in burn survivors, patients with MI or patients with LET. Study quality was assessed using the Downs & Black checkl

Conventional diatom testing using strong acid: influence of postmortem contamination on diatoms in closed organs and lungs of highly decomposed immersed bodies.

Our previous study showed that diatoms adhering to Kjeldahl flasks can cause false-positive results in subsequent tests (28% of flasks; 1-290 diatoms/flask). Among 100 autopsy cases, ≥5 diatoms/10 g were found in the kidney of only two decomposed bodies, raising suspicion of contamination during postmortem immersion and/or tissue sampling at autopsy. In the present study, we examined 38 highly decomposed immersed bodies using only new flasks. Despite severe decomposition, no diatoms were detected in the kidney or liver in 15 cases (39%). Among 12 cases with an open thoracic and/or abdominal ca

Distal bipedicled "supra cross leg" flap: a salvage option for complex lower limb defects.

BACKGROUND: Open leg fractures are severe and common injuries. When a free flap and/or a local pedicled flap is not feasible or has failed, the cross-leg flap remains a last-resort option to avoid amputation. The aim of this study is to explain the technical aspects and clinical advantages of the distal bipedicled "supra cross-leg" flap, based on a series of four cases. METHODS: Four patients underwent reconstruction using a distal bipedicled "supra cross-leg" flap between 2016 and 2026 at HIA Percy, a Level I trauma center and burn treatment center (Clamart, France). Demographic, trauma-rela

Monitoring and evaluation of an artificial intelligence-enhanced wound care intervention in a rural health network: defining stakeholder expectations and shared priorities.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic, hard-to-heal, wounds such as diabetes-related foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure injuries, represent a growing global burden, contributing to high morbidity, and increased healthcare costs and demands on clinical capacity. These challenges are amplified in rural and remote settings, where limited resources and availability of services, workforce shortages, and geographical barriers restrict access to specialised wound care. Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools offer potential to enhance wound assessment, standardise documentation, and expand access to wou

Atypical workplace suicide by industrial guillotine: An unusual autopsy case report.

Decapitation injuries, defined as the complete severance of the head from the trunk, result from various causes, including railway accidents, road traffic collisions, homicidal assaults, and explosive trauma. While a head transection clearly establishes the cause of death, determining the manner of death remains challenging. We report a rare case of a 50-year-old male who allegedly sustained decapitation involving a power press machine following a workplace fall. Given uncertainties regarding the manner of death, a multidisciplinary scene investigation was undertaken, involving forensic pathol

Closed reduction and percutaneous screw fixation with early rehabilitation versus cast immobilization in minimally displaced sanders type II-III calcaneal fractures: a two-center retrospective comparison of treatment protocols.

BACKGROUND: Minimally displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures are commonly managed with cast immobilization, but prolonged immobilization may delay recovery and contribute to hindfoot stiffness. This study compared mid-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of two institutional protocols for minimally displaced Sanders type II-III calcaneal fractures: closed reduction and percutaneous screw fixation with earlier range-of-motion exercises versus cast immobilization. METHODS: This two-center retrospective cohort study included 87 patients treated between January 2018 and February 2024 wi

The effects of vision and multiple cognitive tasks on pre-landing and early landing mechanics associated with ACL loading.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries often occur during landing tasks when visual information is limited and attentional resources are divided. PURPOSE: This study examined how the absence of vision and multiple cognitive tasks influenced pre-landing and early landing mechanics associated with ACL loading. METHODS: Thirty-four recreationally active college students with jump-landing sports experience performed single-leg drop landings under eight conditions: vision or no vision combined with no cognitive task, backward counting, tone counting, or both cognitive tasks simulta

A novel framework for integrating post-mortem images with 3D body models for automatic injury medical documentation.

Forensic medicine is critical in criminal investigations, providing essential insights into the nature and mechanisms of injuries. Traditional post-mortem examination remains mostly manual, which introduces risks of error and inefficiency, particularly in injury assessment. This study proposes a fully automated system for detecting and mapping injuries (bruises and abrasions) on a 3D human body model to improve forensic documentation. The developed automated system consisted of the following modules: (1) a module for predicting injuries in images, (2) a module for generating a 3D human body ba

The correlation between skin wound age and expression of IL-36α, IL-36γ and IL-38 proteins in mice.

PURPOSE: To investigate the time-dependent expression of inflammatory cytokines (IL-36α, IL-36γ, and IL-38) in mouse skin wounds and explore their forensic potentials in wound age estimation. METHODS: A standardized skin wound model in mice at seven time points (6 h, 12 h, 1d, 3d, 5d, 7d, and 10d) was established. The protein and mRNA expression levels of IL-36α, IL-36γ, and IL-38 were measured by Western blot and RT-qPCR. Finally, three mathematical models of IL-36α, IL-36γ, and IL-38 based on the protein levels of skin wounds were constructed. RESULTS: Morphological changes were aligned wi

Two Different Approaches for Closure of Iatrogenic Femoral Pseudoaneurysms Using a Closure Device.

Iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms at vascular access sites are a common complication of endovascular procedures, occurring in 2.6%-7.7% of femoral artery access cases. Conventional treatments, such as manual compression, thrombin injection, surgical repair, and stent graft placement, each present limitations, including recurrence, invasiveness, and embolic risk. Recently, suture-mediated closure devices have emerged as minimally invasive and promising alternatives for pseudoaneurysm repair. We successfully treated two pseudoaneurysms, one involving the superficial femoral artery (SFA) and another inv

Overkill behind closed doors: a medico-legal case series and review of literature of familial Homicides.

"Overkill" is a specific homicidal pattern marked by the excessive and disproportionate use of violence beyond what is necessary to cause death to the extent that a high number of post-mortem lesions are often found on the corpse. Though it constitutes a minority of homicide cases, overkill is increasingly observed in domestic and familial contexts, where symbolic or psychopathological motivations often emerge. This study presents a review of literature concerning overkill in familial context and a five-year retrospective analysis (2021-2025) of judicial cases managed by the Institute of Legal

Non-invasive spinal cord neuromodulation enables volitional anti-gravity leg movements after motor-complete spinal cord injury: responders vs. non-responders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is an emerging treatment for motor recovery following spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the extent of motor recovery with tSCS and the reasons why some individuals with motor-complete SCI respond less effectively, despite having the same injury classification, remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that lumbosacral tSCS can enable anti-gravity voluntary movement following motor-complete SCI, and identify markers that distinguish responders from non-responders. METHODS: Ten individuals with chronic cervical and upper thora

Cinematic rendering in traumatic musculoskeletal injuries of the lower extremity: a pictorial review.

Musculoskeletal pathologies involve multiple tissue types, most commonly including bone and muscle. This complexity leads to diverse clinical presentations, which complicates diagnosis, management, and triage, particularly in acute trauma cases. Accurate visualization of these injuries requires timely imaging and detailed interpretation of intricate anatomical structures, especially in the emergency department (ED). While conventional radiographs and two-dimensional (2D) computed tomography (CT) remain valuable for evaluating such injuries, a novel three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction techniq

Forensic investigation of burned human remains in fire-related deaths: multidisciplinary perspectives and emerging diagnostic approaches.

The forensic investigation of burned human remains serves as a critical basis for forensic case characterization in fire-related deaths. Owing to the complexity of fire scenes, postmortem heat-induced artifacts can severely interfere with forensic interpretation. Consequently, the assessment of vital reaction and the determination of the cause of death in burned human remains have long been key and challenging issues in both fire investigation and forensic practice. In recent years, substantial advances have been made in techniques for the forensic examination of burned human remains. From the
