BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSI) remain a significant concern following Type III open fractures. Recent studies have suggested that narrow-spectrum antibiotics like cefazolin (CEZ) may offer comparable efficacy to broader-spectrum combinations in preventing SSI, with potential cost benefits. However, the cost-effectiveness of different prophylactic regimens in Type III open fractures in China has not been comprehensively evaluated. METHODS: A decision-tree model was constructed for a hypothetical cohort of 1,000 adult patients with Type III open fractures in the Chinese healthcare se

OBJECTIVE: Obesity increases the risk of musculoskeletal conditions, but retrospective studies have suggested that individuals with joint hypermobility experience more joint pain after metabolic and bariatric surgery and weight loss. Joint hypermobility is the ability of one or more joints to move beyond the normal range of motion. This study prospectively investigated postoperative joint pain and its association with joint hypermobility.
METHODS: A survey including the 5-Part Questionnaire (5PQ) and a self-developed joint pain questionnaire was completed prior to and 1 year after metabolic a

INTRODUCTION: Trauma results in approximately 1.19 million deaths and 20-50 million disabilities globally each year. With increasing industrialization, road traffic injuries have become a leading cause of Disability Adjusted Life Years and traumatic amputations. These sudden amputations often lead to significant psychological distress. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in enhancing the Quality of Life of post-traumatic amputees.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial enrolled 74 post-traumatic extremity amputees aged over 18 years, who w

PURPOSE: Intratendinous sliding, that is, nonuniform motions between the superficial and deep layers of the Achilles tendon, is reduced in individuals with Achilles tendinopathy compared with healthy controls during isometric contractions. Previous work has shown that intratendinous sliding can be increased by performing isometric contractions with a horizontally outward-rotated ("toes-out") foot position. The purpose of this study was to compare intratendinous sliding between healthy individuals and patients with Achilles tendinopathy during dynamic exercises, and to determine the effect of a

BACKGROUND: Optimal postoperative management of unstable ankle fractures after internal fixation remains unclear. Traditional care uses prolonged immobilization and delayed weight-bearing (DWB), but early mobilization may accelerate recovery. This study evaluated whether early weight-bearing (EWB) and mobilization improve functional outcomes, rehabilitation progress, and complication rates after surgical fixation.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included 52 adult patients (18-65 years) with acute unilateral unstable ankle fractures treated through open reduction and internal fixatio

BACKGROUND: To develop a 10-year risk score to predict lower-limb amputation (LLA) in individuals with type 1 diabetes, and to assess whether this score also predicts kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
METHODS: The LLA risk score was derived from GENEDIAB and GENESIS, two prospective French and Belgian cohorts of 828 individuals with type 1 diabetes. External validation was assessed in SURGENE, an independent cohort of 247 individuals with type 1 diabetes. LLA was defined as a non-traumatic amputation above the metatarsophalangeal joint, kidney failure as the need for renal rep

OBJECTIVES: Youth weight and resistance training are growing in popularity, offering benefits like improved performance and injury prevention. However, improper technique and lack of supervision can lead to injuries - many of which are preventable with proper training and guidance. This study examined weightlifting-related injury trends and causes among youth in U.S. emergency departments. It was hypothesized that injuries would increase from 2014 to 2023, teens would have the highest injury rates, and crush injuries to fingers and toes would be the most common.
METHODS: The National Electron

BACKGROUND: Foot ulceration is a debilitating and often disabling complication of diabetes mellitus, with negative prognostic associations in terms of morbidity and mortality. Percutaneous needle tenotomy (PNT) is increasingly recognized as a safe, minimally invasive procedure for treating tendon-related deformities, including mechanical forefoot ulceration. This study evaluated clinical outcomes of needle flexor tenotomies performed by a podiatrist versus an orthopaedic surgeon.
METHODS: This service evaluation reviewed consecutive adult patients with foot ulceration who received needle teno

Distal partial necrosis is a frequent complication of propeller flaps and similar pedicled flaps, with reported incidences up to 21%. This report describes the case of a 2-year-old patient who underwent reconstruction of a posterior ankle soft-tissue defect using a peroneal artery-based propeller flap. The procedure was complicated by postoperative partial flap necrosis. On postoperative day 2, a free peroneal perforator flap was harvested from the viable proximal segment of the original flap to provide secondary wound coverage. The transferred flap survived completely, resulting in excellent

INTRODUCTION: End-stage ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is primarily post-traumatic, following injuries such as fractures, dislocations, and sprains. However, the timeline between initial injury and end-stage OA requiring surgical intervention remains poorly understood. This retrospective study aimed to identify injury patterns leading to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) and determine the time from injury to definitive surgical treatment with ankle fusion (AF) or total ankle replacement (TAR).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using medical records of patients who underwent AF

In amphibian capture-recapture studies, commonly used individual-identification methods include toe clipping as well as less invasive alternatives of varying cost. Yet, choosing the best method for a study is challenging, because both the reliability for identification and the severity of adverse effects of a given mark type can greatly vary between species as well as life stages. We compared the reliability of three identification methods in young agile frogs (Rana dalmatina): clipping a single phalanx, injecting visible-implant-elastomer (VIE) tags (one of six colours) under the skin, and ph
